    Perfectly detailed and I appreciate that you didn't just say "to install, just do everything in reverse" you walked through the install as well.

    What a great video! VERY informative, no tacky music, well planned out removal and install, no no corny stories about aunt Ester and her bunions on her feet! Loved it. I happen to have a 07, 09, 15, and an 19 Express vans. Hopefully I will not have to watch video again because if I do it means I am buying an engine. Thank you very much for your video. Good job and a great, easy to watch job of documenting your work! Four years later, still going strong? Saw your response about "While you're there" down below, but this certainly would've been an opportune time to replace items like crank and cam position sensors, perhaps the knock sensors, starter, coolant pump, thermostat, oil cooler lines, coolant hoses, belt and engine mounts. I'm thinking name brand, quality replacement parts; not replacing OEM with the cheapest stuff on Amazon. You know the history of your vehicle and what has and hasn't been replaced recently, but these parts are all much cheaper than the labor you're saving and should help ensure reliability and that you're not going back in there anytime soon. I was surprised - no, make that impressed! - that you completely reassembled everything before starting the engine; showing a lot of confidence in your work and the rebuilt engine there, lol!

    Awesome videos ! Great camera work, very clear narration, and excellent work quality. Thank you very much. One thing about filling coolant: I find on the vans it is much easier to fill through the upper rad hose. disconnect from the rad, lift it up, and fill that way. It helps with bleeding the system as well.

    Excellent videos! One comment I'd like to make, though, is about the oil filling at 18:20. One can clearly see that you are using a full synthetic oil.
    I was always taught never to do this, for two reasons.
    1) the stuff is super slick and can actually prevent proper ring setting during break in (where you need a bit of wear to get a good seal). Some, however, may discount this as an old wives tale.
    2) its awfully bloody expensive when you're gonna drain it out and change the filter in a week.
    Our shop just used a decent quality dinosaur oil for the break in period. We actually had an engine break-in stand that spun the engine with a big electric motor at varying speeds so we could perform initial break in for the customer, check oil pressure, check for leaks, compression etc. without installing the engine. There are different schools of thought on the driving process too.
    Again, excellent quality videos, very clear instructions .. I give it top marks!

    • @scottrinne1

      I'm not a mechanic by trade, but that makes sense to me ↑. ...when I needed to swap the engine in my van, I looked for a video and I couldn't find one that was helpful so I decided to make one during a slow time (covid shutdown). If anyone is watching this video and reading this comment, then I would agree with 'Indoor Roadkill' that a cheap oil would be a better option to use during the break-in period.
      ....well, unless some oil expert chimes and convinces me otherwise. :)

    I love your explaining in great detail and what you're doing. I'm looking to purchase a new van. So I'm going to replace the engine for at least 15 years. As I will be changing the oil and transmission fluid at every manufacturer's recommendation. Along with timing chains and anything else that's required. As usually $50 in maintenance will save you thousands of dollars next year..

  • @Mobilexdbx

    Great video, Scott! Recently did a cam swap on another LS and became familiar with a few things that gave me pause in your video. Did you re-use the balancer pulley bolt? Hopefully you just didnt show it, but that bolt is DEFINITELY torque to yield. Manual spec calls using old bolt, fully seating pulley at 250ft-lbs, removing, installing NEW bolt at 37ft-lbs, AND THEN AN ADDL 140*. It might be useful to your viewers to show this, and make sure to sequence it with using the fly wheel locking tool from the earlier point where you installed the alternator, and sequence the video so folks following along dont miss that critical step. In the vette/camaro LS2/LS3 circles, we have LOTS of issues with balancers, so I would also critically suggest AT LEAST replacing that balancer with a new one, if not an aftermarket ATI one, ALONG WITH THE NEW BOLT. CRITICAL.

    • @scottrinne1
      @scottrinne1  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      oh great...now you got me second guessing if I replaced that bolt with a new one or just re-used the old one. ...I think I just re-used the old one and I know I didn't torque it at 250ft-lbs plus 140 degrees...the reason I know I didn't do that is because I only have three torque wrenches and none of them go that high. I hope that it won't cause any problems...maybe I should stop by the dealer and buy a new bolt. (also, I know it was difficult to get the balancer started because the bolt seemed a little too short)
      Anyway, thanks for the comment and the extra work that I now have to do :)

    • @Mobilexdbx
      @Mobilexdbx 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@scottrinne1 I definitely would! PN 12557840, its $7 on Summit. None of mine went up to 250, so I did some goofy antics with a breaker bar and some pipe to "make sure it's seated". That's essentially what it is, but we're talking a press fit. Definitely not something you'd want to put a measurement on from the timing cover (which varies about .010 anyhow on placement and gasket matl. If you can, see if you can get to it from the bottom with some extensions, reef on it, and then replace the bolt. It shouldn't be somethign to lose sleep over, but its pseudo catastrophic if that comes loose and wallow's out the crank snout. Not to menion if it comes OFF. Do not recommend. Two thumbs down. Good lookin out :)

    I also have a 2010 Chevy Express Quigley 4x4 van. I love it! Currently at 125k and running strong. But I have wondered about this exact engine replacement. Great job! I’m curious why you didn’t go ahead and put in a rebuilt or new transmission while you were there? If the trans was as worn as the original engine it probably doesn’t have a lot left. Just curious- thanks !

    • @scottrinne1

      Thanks! The transmission was already replaced and had about 30,000 miles at the time we did the engine.
      “While we’re there” can be a dangerous trap…it can turn a simple project into a HUGE project that goes way over budget. Example: if we did the trans, then we might as well do the transfer case. If we do the transfer case, then we might as well do the driveshafts and differentials…and the next thing we are repainting the whole van. :)

    Awesome, you really know this engine, I have a question, I have a Chevy express 2004 1500 2wd, it was running fine until we got hit with this freeze, I live in Texas, while I was
    driving slowing down to a light, then when I press the accelerator I all of sudden get this phoosing sound but my check engine light did not come on, so the more I press
    the accelerator as I increase in speed the sound stops when I reach over 40 mph. I installed a new MAS, checked all the hose connections, then just got the fuel system cleaned
    up. The sound is not as bad or loud but it does continue when I am at rest and press on the accelerator. I reach 75 mph and cruise at 70 and hardly ever hear that sound only
    when I am at a stop in the increase in speed. I got a new factory cat system last year and my engine light is not on, do you think it is the carbonator, fuel injection or air flow
    system with a cracked hose that I cannot see?

I’d get a used V8 van because the V6 is underpowered for these vans. If I got a 4.3 V6 van, I’d swap it with the 6.6. Definitely doable because GM makes parts for it!

      It’s from a GMC Sierra truck. It’s not a bolt-on part; it requires cutting and welding.

    I was told that the only difference between the three-quarter ton and ton chey is just an extra spring in the rear leaf springs. However the Ford does a lot more between the three quarter ton and their 1-ton it's much more than just an extra beefed-up spring in the rear. But they cannot compete with a 6.0 or the 6.6 L that the Chevy has.

    2 QUESTION HOW LONG DID IT TAKE YOU ? AND HOW MUCH MONEY ? I HAVE A CHEVY VAN THAT NEEDS AN ENGINE .. STILL RUNS BUT IT HAS 400 K MILES

    • @scottrinne1
      @scottrinne1  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I was filming so it took forever. :)
      I don’t quote me but I think the book-time is 18 hours???? …and the price depends on the cost of the engine in your area. (Look on car-parts.com to get an idea) …not to mention you should add about $500 to the budget for little things: fluids, hoses, pulleys, and the might-as-well since-I’m-in-here-parts.
