  • This is one of the most common causes for oil/coolant leaks for the 530d 535d and all the other cars that have the N57 engine. Time to fix it.

    Excellent - exactly what I was looking for. It's a shame BMW can't make cars that down leak oil though. In 40 years of motoring I've never had a car with such a bad oil leak - including 1970s Lancias! ADDENDUM! This video should come with a warning. My F10 n57 330d is slightly different to the one shown in this video. The screws holding the oil filter housing are some kind of torx head and the 2 at the top are virtually impossible to get to unless you have a very slim 10mm torx socket - Nightmare!

    Hello, you said in the video that we need some distilled water. What do you do with it ? Do you use it to clean something? If yes what? I busy doing the change of the gasket right now! Thanks a lot for the tutorial and the help!

      Distilled water to use with the bmw coolant concentrate to get your final coolant liquid.

    Hi Bogdan, couple of questions:
    1) why haven't you drained the coolant before starting disassembling the oil filter housing, in order to have a more controlled way of catching it?
    2) is it mandatory to remove the undertrays in order to unbolt the oil filter housing? Or it's sufficient just to have access from above?

      From what I remember: 1. Did not drain coolant because: a)one of the coolant pipes that i needed to disconnect was on top of the intercooler pipe and wold have required disconnecting that and was imagining getting coolant in the intercooler. b) also draining all coolant will involve more air that gets in the system so I done the minimum coolant removed.
      2. I removed the undertray to control the spill of coolant. you can access bolt from the top.

      on my car the BMW F10 530d N57 engine, the rocker cover looks ok ... on the other side, I am considering the lower sump gasket, because that one might loose some oil ... how bad is yours ?

      @@BestCarMods my rocker cover is leaking on the corner above the downpipe. It smokes occasionally which freaks my wife out 😂

      @@ronnienag clean it with some brake cleaner and make sure that it is the gasket ... i have a dodgy looking tube "Air Filter Breather Pipe 13717577471 " that some times looks dirty...

      also try tightening the bolts if possible ... to see if it improves ...

    Hi,
    Nice job!
    But I have a doubt regarding the torque settings for the bolts: I did some research for my bolts which are M6x40mm, NORM 8.8, and the BMW recommend 10 N/m torque (the bolts are rated for 12 N/m max).
    What do you think?

      maybe you have a different car/engine ... in my case I see M8 19 Nm±3

    Having the same issue on a F30 320d. The bmw representative service said that the entire ensemble (with coolers and heat exchangers) has to be replaced because they're made of ALU and will deform while working with them. To me it sound a bit excessive since the gasket costs 15$ while the entire ensemble is priced in the 1500$ region. Thoughts? Thanks

      I never worked on a F30 and can't give you an answer based on practical experience. On my F10 there where no problems in changing that gasket. If you want to get a general view of the part assembly go to www.realoem.com use the last 7 digits of your vin to filter the car info ... click on browse ... and look into the Engine > Lubrication system ... it might give you an idea of how the parts are assembled. Let me know how it goes :)

      @@BestCarMods already went to the etk parts finder and it doesn't seem all that much different from what you're working with. I asked for a quote from an indy dealer so we'll see how that goes

    If you disconnect your battery, the FRm module will power down and will not start up again normally. Did you do anything to start it? Last time we had this issue when we replaced the battery with a new one.

      never had an issue with any module after removing battery. and I have done it a few times and for extended periods of time.

    After the specific work was completed in a specialized workshop and immediately after receiving the car, the bearing of the number two crankshaft was also destroyed.
    What can cause this damage destruction of metal connecting rod and crankshaft?

      don't think so. if you are just getting a bit of oil dripping, you could tighten up the bolts a bit more and it will stop it.

      hard to say. in cases like this you can't give a verdict without opening up the engine, analysing the condition of the other parts, taking in account service history and other factors.

      NewTIS + ISTA, however after a few weeks I seen some oil/water traces and torqued it even more than 20Nm ...

    How did you bleed the cooling System?

      did not really do anything special. run the engine and wait for the air to come out. Heat for HVAC at max, fan at min. There is a procedure that helps and uses an aux pump on some models, but that never worked on my car.

    Salut! Sti cumva daca termostatul de la ulei se afla in acea carcasa de aliminiu? Al meu n57 se supra incalzeste la mers normal, dar daca o dau pe manual si o tin turata se raceste iar. Inclin pe termostat/racitor ulei. Zi mi te rog daca vin la pachet sau trebuiesc comandate separat. Succes in continuare!

    Hello ! How many liters of oil i need after changing the gasket ? I dont want to change filter and oil because i allready change them 3 months ago ! Thanks !

      less than 1 liter, but doing the repair like i have done will have a big risk of coolant getting in the oil. why not wait until you have to do the oil change ?

    my oil only has 3k miles on it, was thinking of draining it to change the gasket and reusing it, what do you think?

      It is not worth reusing the oil. If you want to keep the oil longer, run the car like it is, top up with coolant and change everything later.

    I just changed my Oil like 2000km , Are you sure i need to change my oil ? I can chnage the filter but the complete oil will cost me a lot

      do the repair later, just before the engine oil change. You do the oil change to minimise the risk of getting coolant inside of your engine.

      @@BestCarModsAcum cea mai buna decizie, la fel ca la capacul de culbutori bănuiesc ca ar fi inlocuirea ansamblului complet, ca poate și cu toate garniturile schimbate, după sa nu fie iar probleme.
