  • How to fit a piezo pickup and preamp into an acoustic guitar and make it into an electro-acoustic guitar. I've done the same project with a Fishman Presys Blend 301 pickup and preamp
    • Fishman Presys Blend 3...
    In this project I fit a piezo pickup and mic, LC-5 equalizer preamp into an acoustic guitar or in other words, I make an acoustic guitar into an electro-acoustic guitar.
    The preamp also has the addition of a microphone socket and a control to balance the sound of the mic with the sound of the pickup making it very flexible. The results are an acoustic guitar that can be plugged straight into an amplifier, mixing desk or effects for easy recording or good live performance. I did this project with a cheap guitar so I can see what the results were going to be like without potentially ruining an expensive guitar, however I was very impressed with the sound the preamp produced. My only criticism after using the guitar for a while was that the battery like in this preamp was very poor. I have now done exactly the same job using a Fishman Presys Blend 301, which also a microphone and piezo pickup but I was far more impressed with the battery life in that preamp and the sound was very good.
    In this project the preamp was an unbranded one that was bought off Ebay directly from Hong Kong, however it is still available to buy. To find the preamp on eBay or Amazon search 'Acoustic Guitar Preamp EQ LC-5'
    I replaced the microphone provided with a Sony ECM-DS70P because it made a noticeable improvement to the sound and the background noise.

      first of all my friend ...you don't drill holes or use a jigsaw....you tape the area with green painters tape , mark your dimensions , cut with exacto knife or sheetrock knife with new blade (FOLLOW LINES ) don't use to much pressure PASS OVER LINE UNTIL YOU ARE TROUGH be carefull at the end be gentle ..remove tape a little sanding to make the edges clean and have a snug fit....AND THEN NO MISTAKE ....

      @@wchbang4811 If you watch carefully as he is testing the fit of the preamp and marking for the screws, you can see the pick he uses to mark the holes go straight into the body of the guitar because the one thing he didn't do was leave any wood for the screws to go into. If you notice on the bottom of the preamp, there are angles that he simply just cut away. Those angles were there so that the screws would have some wood there to grab onto. I'm sure he figured that out. But I also bet that he got a buzz while playing because some of the screws wouldn't tighten. Just something I noticed.

    When installing a large output-jack module (such as here), it's important to remember to NOT 'intrude' into the area of the butt-end of the guitar that is occupied by the guitar's internal end-block. These end-blocks are glued into the guitar, to reinforce the center of the guitar's butt-end, where the two sides come together. The end-block can vary in size quite a bit, but are usually two to three inches wide.

    • @guitar-academy
      @guitar-academy  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Good point and absolutely correct as the end-block is an important part of the guitars strength.

    Phill Robinson That's a good suggestion in theory however, like most acoustic guitars the depth isn't uniform. On this instrument the body is thinner at the neck than at the base. Therefore if you use a set-square the preamp just looks crooked. It is better to find a centre line and work from there.

      +Fadi Jubran The one with the mic also has a piezo. You can balance the sound between the piezo and the mic so you can have all mic or all piezo or a mixture of both. The mic sounds different to the piezo and it is a choice if you want to use it or not. You do not need to have a mic it is just for extra variation to the sound you can produce . . I hope this helps :-)

    Great Job. Did u have to make any adjustments with respect to the saddle due to the piezo install?

    • @guitar-academy
      @guitar-academy  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The saddle and bridge were left untouched because this guitar had a shim under the bridge that I just removed, however in most cases I have to take the width of the piezo off the bottom of the bridge. Apart from drilling a hole for the wire I never remove material from the saddle (it's very risky).

    • @brianodea3070
      @brianodea3070 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      GCH Guitar Academy in this conversation, are you referring to the plastic saddle as the “Bridge”? Or why would you consider removing plastic as risky as opposed to removing wood?

  • @BakerSynth

    I am not really a guitar player, but your expertise of cutting into the wood makes me want to cut into the wooden paneling of my $2800 Dave Smith Squential Prophet 6 and do some modding. :) This was a very impressive instructional video. Excellent Instruction. Maybe you should have stuck a KM84 in there. Well, the Neumann KM84 looks better on the mic stand outside of the guitar anyway. Did I miss in the video where you shaved the bridge down to compensate? 2) Temu and aliexpress show about 4 EQ pre-amp, tuners that look exactly the same, but have different model numbers. It seems impossible to tell if one os better than another. How do you choose? Thanks much.

    Hi, thank you for the video ! How much did you spend on that amp? Is it worth spending more on brand-products or do the no-name ones do a (almost) equal job?

    • @guitar-academy
      @guitar-academy  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      mrbomplastik Good question . . .
      I used this product because at the time I made the video only one or two companies made the variety with a mic. The criticism I had of the preamp I used was the fact that the batteries went flat very quickly. Another thing to consider is the fact that I fitted this pickup/amp just to make the video and the guitar was a very cheap one. If I was doing this again on a guitar that was more expensive or a guitar I liked I would probably go for a brand-product, but I would recommend a bit of research first . . looking reviews and stuff.

    • @mrbomplastik
      @mrbomplastik 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      GCH Guitar Academy The thing is that most reviews say the expected: decent sound for that price.... doesn't really help... have you personally any experience with the (30 bux) fishman presys blend? Sounds nice in youtube videos.... most other tests, demonstrations and comparisons are only for high end products...

    • @guitar-academy
      @guitar-academy  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      mrbomplastik At the moment I don't do reviews, mainly because I don't have a sponsor and I don't have the resources to buy guitars and pickups just for the sake of tests. I merely video some of the upgrades and repairs I do to my own and my clients guitars. The videos I do are 'How To' videos and you would have to contact a reviewer to get a decent review. However, you have given me thought for the future . .
      But to answer your question, one of my many guitars is a James Neligan electro-acoustic with Fishman electrics and it is the nicest recording guitar I have owned for years. I would say it sounds more natural than any of the high end guitars I have owned. I was just selling it for someone, but after playing with it for a week I sold my own guitar had held onto it. So 'Yes' I have hours of experience with the Fishman in a recording environment and I rate them highly.

    Thanks!

    • @guitar-academy
      @guitar-academy  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      This pre-amp has a balance slider so you can easily adjust the balance between the mic and the pickup. I don't know if a straight swap would work because the mic and the pickup probably have a different impedance and there might be distortion. The simplest way of finding this out would be to test it before fitting it in the guitar.

    1_Most people i see doing the 'upgrade' are doing so on cheap guitars, and as my guitar is worth approx £500 i am understandably nervous. Would you do this on a 'relatively' expensive guitar?
    2_The topside of the guitar seems to have some varnish/lacquer, and i'm cautious about cracking it. Are there any tips to minimise the chances of damaging the guitar?.
    Lastly, any advice with fitting saddle?
    Many Thanks...................

    • @guitar-academy
      @guitar-academy  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +Benny Hill 1. If you aren't confident . . don't do it.
      2. once you have measured the whole size you can scratch or cut the varnish with a very sharp knife to prevent any cracks appearing.
      Again . . the best advice is if you aren't sure or confident don't do it, just buy a guitar with the pickups fitted.

      But 2 other suggestions,
      1 if the strings are not a complete set you will find a lighter string will have less volume.
      2 if the underside of the bridge is uneven this can cause issues, make sure the underside of the plastic bridge is making contact uniformly with the pickup.

    Do you hear a difference with the addition of a microphone in the body of the guitar.....is there a different tone with the microphone compared to only having the piezo pick up under the saddle?

    • @guitar-academy
      @guitar-academy  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah . . it is a very different sound and if you have the ability to mix between the mic and the pickup in the preamp then you can get the best from both methods to find your perfect sound . . . or at least that's what I found. :-)

    Hello, I hope you are having a great weekend. Thank You for such a great video once again. I actually bought the 4 band EQP pre-amp that is very similar to the one in your video, minus the small microphone. I bought a $35.00 USD "00" body shape acoustic guitar, after setting it up and fixing some minor issue, I installed the piezo pickup pre-amp EQ using a rotary tool and a sharp pocket knife. Sounds amazing! Good enough for the commercial licensed music that I write. Cheers! - MrTom

      Yes.. and it's rare to find a "00" body acoustic guitar at the $35.00 USD price point. :-) Very interesting body, as it has birch wood for the back and sides, with a butterscotch like stain... again.. very interesting.

      I got a couple Glorry brand for $47 and the pre amp for $10..The guitars needed work out of the box...i had to recess the front part of the bridge so the strings would clear it...The action on those guitars are around a usa quarter thickness at the 12 fret (NOW)...Standard electric guitar action. The action on my electric are actually lower...I also had to clean the fret's ends.
      it's less than an hour works...including install the preamp. Both guitars plays great..they sound different acousticly...even though they're identical guitars. Oh yeah...the tuners on both guitars need replacing.
      Not a big deal...metal seal tuners are only $10...I dont have problems
      with them...
      I also got a Irin for $67 and $12 for preamp with mic. The Irin are better quality controlled out of the box...i still had to drop the action and clean the frets ends.. only sand the bridge saddle to drop the action.
      This guitar is made from sapele wood. it's brighter.
      I dont mind the guitars having different sounds..
      Around $75 each...with preamps....I cant complain
      I know how to set up and build guitars...it helps
      i have a 1960 Gibson Mocking Bird ( it's dad's old guitar)
      Honestly...The gibson sounds better...but not $30K better.lmao
      Plus Im not going to drill holes in dad's old guitars..lol
      I scratched the new guitars already. i dont mind...camp fire , picknic guitars. If they get stolen...i wouldnt even cry

    Hello, really nice job over here! i was wondering if i have to lower the bridge height or leave it as it is?
    i mean,will the action still be the same over the neck of the guitar or will it increases because of the under bridge pickup?
    Thanks to answer...

    • @guitar-academy
      @guitar-academy  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      If the guitar had no pickup in it originally you will need to lower the action. To do this you sand the bottom of the bridge down to compensate for the height of the pickup. If you are not sure, but a spare bridge before you start as they are very cheap.

    Does this decrease sound quality of the guitar or affects the natural sound in any way?

    • @lefthandedguitar3414
      @lefthandedguitar3414 7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      On the guitar in the video, any sound quality decrease was imperceptible. There was literally no change in the natural sound, however this will vary from guitar to guitar. I wouldn't do this to a guitar unless I really needed it for recording or stage use where the natural sound isn't enough.

    • @abidurrahman4438
      @abidurrahman4438 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yeah,was thinking the same.Instead of taking risks I should just save up to buy a new guitar(already built in).

      Sorry, I answered your question in the wrong account . . LOL
      Yes. The guitar in the video was a really cheap one (as an experiment) however I wasn't disappointed with the sound and I actually used it in an important recording. But I wouldn't take an important guitar to me and do this.

    good day, i hope you see this comment. i just have a question, i just bought a guitar with similar hardware and the thing is, i noticed it is making a not so loud ground hum that disappears whenever i touch the metal part of the jack cable. is there anyway to ground it properly like how electric guitars work where if you touch the strings, the ground hum goes away too?

    • @guitar-academy
      @guitar-academy  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      hmm, it does sound like you have a ground issue. The first thing I would check is the lead and then I would check the easy to see connections behind the jack-plug socket. Hopefully one of these will solve the problem because beyond this it is more complicated. 🤔

    • @sadpotato7029
      @sadpotato7029 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@guitar-academy yeah, i think the one i got is just broken or something. i tried removing the hardware and checked if there's anything strange or blown out/burnt but i found nothing. i guess i'll get the fishman acoustic pickup or something similar instead. thanks for the reply man!

      @@guitar-academy so here's what i ended up doing:
      i found my old samson q7 mic, stupid idea sparked in my brain and thought what if i put the capsule of this mic inside my guitar instead? so i did.
      at first i only replaced the broken xlr out from the mic with from another old broken mic and it worked, but the problem is, i wanted to plug it into my scarlett solo's instrument input so i can use the mic input at the same time which wasnt happening for some reason coz even if i use the xlr to 6.5mm jack, it's not giving out any signal. it works perfectly in the mic input tho.
      another stupid idea came up when i saw my guitar's old jack and thought what happens if i wire this capsule directly to a jack AND IT WORKED. IT EVEN WORKED ON THE INSTRUMENT INPUT IN MY SCARLETT SOLO HAHAHAHA now it's just a matter of positioning the mic properly to get a balanced bass and treble sound from the guitar since it is mic'ed from inside. i also need to come up with something that will make the mic capsule stay in place without damaging the guitar
