Christina Aguilera's Incredible Agility, Riffs And Runs

  • For those who say her runs are not connected with the melody of the songs, that they are sloppy, and not impressive. Always keep in mind that she never was classically or professionally trained to sing runs and melisma. People achieve this type of singing by years and years of practicing and studying.
    Good day y'all!

    Her natural agility is immense. Even years of wear and tear to her voice hasnt diminished too much of her agility. She would've definitely been trained as a coloratura no doubt. That Without you run at 2:45-2:55 is just extraordinary.

      +TheVirtuoso Lol. I like her and I listen to some of her songs. I do respect her the same way some fighters (Elizabeth Rey, Pokemontas, FF2 FF2, Breakdown, etc...) "respect" my fave Mariah sometimes :/.
      But I always praise Christina when must. Even if some fighters criticize Mariah in her great vocal moments, I just criticize Christina vocal fails, never her great vocals. No one can deny Christina has an great natural agility in her voice, has a very beautiful timbre and also that she has the most beautiful falsetto register (female) I've ever heard (my opinion). I don't hate Christina herself, I hate how some fighters treat my idol bcuz of things that happened early 00's and which their idol started. But whatever, Both Mariah and Christina are great singers, but for me Mariah is the best singer this world ever met, it doesn't mean Christina is far below. ;) I just don't like her belting technique, but she's great.

    I'm surprised that her TRL performance of "So Emotional" from 1999 wasn't included. The live version puts the studio cut to shame and is infinitely better. The gospel bridge and climax she added are absolutely mind-blowing and feature back-to-back runs for days... it was the first time I knew she could really sing and I became a fan that very moment.

    I changed my mind, she's definitely a coloratura since she could do these complex vocal runs since she was young and she never was classically or professionally trained to sing runs and melisma but I still wonder if she's a soprano or a mezzo and if she has a light or a dark voice

    • @c-anime23
      @c-anime23 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      She is not a coloratura it takes more than executing fast and complex riffs/runs to be a coloratura singer and Christina doesn't meet any of the requirements

    • @MrPeppeRE
      @MrPeppeRE 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Chris Anwuri
      what are the other requirements?

    • @c-anime23
      @c-anime23 8 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      the requirements for being a coloratura include that the singer must have a completely connected vocal range with no gaps in between, must have flawless pitch and accuracy with their riffs/runs(which Christina lacks), must also be able to execute the most difficult vocal ornaments like staccato riffs in chest and head voice, legato-arpeggios, glissando riffs. They also must me able to execute difficult vocal dynamics like crescendos and decrescendos, complex and agile riffs, runs, and vocal trills that have excellent musicality(christina's riffs and runs are agile but they are very sloppy at times and have below average musicality to them). They also must be able to do vocal transitions from chest to head voice and vice versa because it shows mastery of the register transitions(Christina has never used head voice only falsetto which is a disconnected register and like I said before a coloratura must have a completely connected vocal range)

    • @MrPeppeRE
      @MrPeppeRE 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Chris Anwuri
      and who is a coloratura in pop music?

    • @ElizabethRey97
      @ElizabethRey97  8 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      +Chris Anwuri +Chris Anwuri Transitions, staccatos, crescandos, glissandos, legato arpeggios she has done them alot. Musicality deals with personal taste and musicanship. It's not a skill you can aquire. You just have it. And that downward complex legato arpeggio she did on The Voice (also found here) was done out of the open and it showd great musicality and it fit very well with the song. Connected range. Uhmm she showcased her ability to transition from falsetto/HV to chest and vice versa. Shouldn't this be enough to show that her range is connected. I know it may not be enough for just a couple of transitions, but she's not trained professionally. She has also showcased her ability to do meso voce and crescandos.
      "With perfect accuracy"
      Did she loose pitch in any one of these?? She tends to oversing yes. But when she puts her head in them, she can give you one of the most complex runs. Go watch my latest video. She just did a super fast downward arpeggio legato run w/out warm ups.

    This has some really nice gems (1:40-1:47), (2:20-2:26), (2:45-2:55 WAS BEAST❤️🙈🙌🏾)
    When it comes to melismatic ability, I'm really impressed with her natural agility (which rivals true coloraturas like Beyoncé) and I like her usage of her upper extension, but that's about where it ends ! Her limited sense of interpretation, musically, is a problem for me.. You can tell she only knows about 2 real scale patterns (both based on blues/gospel metric structures) and she tries to fit them into virtually every melody, which only works 20% of the time.. Or she's repeating short 2-note licks over and over in attempt to impress casual onlookers. After that her ornamentations become repetitive and uninspired, musically. They don't really go anywhere ..atleast to the extent of melismatic greats ala Aretha, Ella, Mariah, Beyoncé, Brandy, Jazmine Sullivan etc who has both insane technical proficiency along with extraordinary musicianship

    Christina has a naturally agile voice, that much is obvious. However, not a single one of these riffs ever went away from the pentatonic scale and a couple of blues notes, and she seems to employ the same 8 rhythms or so in every riff that goes faster than 2 notes a second. Honestly, after listening to this entire video from start to finish, all of her riffs begin to sound exactly the same. The one riff I really give her a lot of credit for is the 'Ain't No Other Man' riff, as that sucker is intricate and quite the little bitch to execute well. Outside that riff, it's a lot of stuff that doesn't really enhance the melody - it's just her showing off how naturally agile she is.

      +MartyHasNoLife Except, that Without you run. It actually fits the melody and the scale precision is ridiculous, especially for someone with limited training like her.

    • @ElizabethRey97
      @ElizabethRey97  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That's because you're hearing them all together back to back. Angel's We Heard On High also has those runs that fit well with the song. Btw, what's the point of the runs anyway?

    • @MartyMusic777
      @MartyMusic777 8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Elizabeth Rey Usually a run is used to express a heightened emotion or in a second verse to break up the monotony of the melody. Christina's riffs...tend not to be so subtle. Also, other artists who riff who are particularly skilled at riffing can make every single riff sound individual in some way. With Christina, there's a few that have real individuality and creativity put into them. The rest just tend to be spur-of-the-moment type deals, even in-studio.

    To be honest, this video highlights that Xtinas runs are not connected melodically to her songs and are often random and excessive. Maybe I just don't care too much for her style of runs, I only liked a few (1:40, 3:00, and 2:28 is one of my favs ever!) the rest were a bit to excessive for me. In my opinion Xtina never advanced past that stage Beyoncé was in during her DC days and MC was in during her earliest years. The phase where they just did runs because they could and they had the talent and wanted to impress people (as much as I'm impressed by emotions, as a lamb I can admit...the whistle runs are excessive af lol). Their best runs came when their musical style matured and there was a bit of restraint, subtleness, musicality and razor sharp precision in their runs. Xtina to me hasn't gotten to that level of musicality and complexity in her runs.

    • @ElizabethRey97
      @ElizabethRey97  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Probably because these are very complex. You know what I mean?? I for one don't like her live debut runs till 2001. They were soo sloppy and not done very well. I love Mariah's runs, they're really conncected melodically and vocally. But somehow, I haven't heard a very complex, long run/riff from her yet. I love the ones like in Vanishing, I Am Free and Lead the Way but they're not impossible to sing. I'm pretty sure Bey and Christina (if sung with a neutral larynx and well rested) can sing them with ease. Probably the most complex run that comes close to an agile run are the ones in All In Your Mind (she does a downward legato run right before the F5-at 3:40 in the song) and in We Belong Together (the legato downward riff from the BET Blueprint performance in 2005 right before the legendary Eb3 (take your time mimi)). Those are the ones that come close to impressive agile coloratura-esque runs. Thanks for the comment!!

    • @dafuture93
      @dafuture93 8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      +Elizabeth Rey eh I see. You tend to like longer, legato runs! This video, affinity for Xtina, etc makes sense now. That style of runs/riffs impresses you more, am I right? But yeah MC doesn't have a lot of those, except for VOL, CTTW, and the ones you already listed. She does more shorter, very quick runs (i.e. The first 15 seconds of One More Try) the agility that she showcased there and in some of her other runs, I don't think Bey or Xtina can match. And she has complex runs but they're short and usually tucked in the background or whispered so they're not as noticeable (I didn't notice a lot of her runs until I started singing along to her songs lol). Are there any Xtina or Bey runs/riffs that you would consider impossible to sing?

    • @ElizabethRey97
      @ElizabethRey97  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      MikeJMCarey93 Yes exactly!! I also agree that Mariah's runs and riffs are musically better than Christina, hence the more simple runs (maybe that's why she doesn't have complex runs like the ones Bey and Christina sing). I also agree that her latest album (Me I Am.. (longest album title hahaa)) is her best album concerning runs and riffs. I still listen to Heavenly (yesterday when I was in the shower, I was belting that song lmao) and Faded!!! They are sooo good.
      "Are there any Xtina or Bey runs/riffs that you would consider impossible to sing?"
      Not that they are impossible but I think if someone who's good at singing runs and riffs, there's a big chance that they might fail when they try to execute it for the first time. Tough Lover intro, Infatuation, At Last live, Merry Christmas Baby live, Falsas Esperansaz, and Cruz. As for Beyonce, most of them lol.

      +MikeJMCarey93 I actually agree about Mariah's runs and riffs. The fact that they are so quick, precise and freakishly agile makes them the hardest and most impressive runs in the industry. I apologize think that some of her most complex, and impressive runs have been executed live.
      Mariah, Debelah Morgan, Beyonce, and even Christina have executed some of the most impressive vocal feats I've heard outside opera.

    Christina Aguilera is not a "Coloratura Mezzo Soprano"; she never has been one and she never will be one.
    Do you have the slightest idea of what it genuinely means to be a 'coloratura'- oriented singer?
    First and foremost, one's voice has to be thoroughly trained in order to sing 'coloratura' passages as it is a technique and skill of which is learned and devloped in its entirety over time - it is not an innate vocal fach. What she sang vocalized here were fast, contemporary-oriented, melismatic runs and riffs which were 'good' but they still do not come close to the execution of genuine 'coloratura' lines and scales sung by operatic singers and for you to say that her level of agility is on par with that of Operatic Soprano's and Mezzo Soprano's is simply comical.
    Ella Fitzgerald was a genuine 'Coloratura Mezzo Soprano', Sarah Vaughan was a genuine 'Coloratura Mezzo Soprano, Nancy Wilson was a genuine 'Coloratura Mezzo Soprano and, to various degress, Beyonce's voice is in conjunction with that of a Coloratura Mezzo Soprano.
    Pseudo [vocal] intellectuals such as yourself are absolutely hilarious. There is a chance that you have never heard nor listened to a 'coloratura' singer, male or female, and yet you're ridiculously applying classical voice theory to a singer whose technique has to be one of the worst to ever grace the Pop singing landscape as a whole.

      Because there's nothing truly *coloratura* about her disconnected voice and often sloppy vocal embellishments. An obsession with melisma and warbling all over the place does not make one a coloratura singer, LOL. 'Coloratura' is a Western classical term and the best lyric-coloratura sopranos, for example, are much more skilled than 'pop' singers like Christina. In short, Western classical terms should not be applied so liberally to contemporary 'pop' singers, as that can be very confusing and misleading. But *if* one is hell-bent on applying the term 'coloratura' to any mainstream singers, then the closest to that definition and classification would include Mariah Carey (in spite of her disconnected range), Debelah Morgan, and Beyoncé.

      Aaro Tähtivuori Please. Head/chest to whistle 'transitions' are just hilariously impossible. Falsetto and whistle are both disconnected registers. You cannot transition from modal (chest, mix, head) to whistle registry. What Mariah has been doing in her iconic vanishing, love takes time, or someday vocals are *vocal switching* . Mariah mostly switches from modal to whistle register. The thing is that Mariah switch too fast making the 'break' unnoticeable to ears. And yes, her range is disconnected. Her laryngeal positioning below D3 are literally low larynx and unhealthy, her consistency in E3s are even questionable. Her upper extension is underdeveloped, her head voice. And she most of the time uses a disconnected registers. So, nope.

      How can she be the best singer when she has one of the worst techniques in the industry. Not trying to hate but and se she has extremely good agility and flexibility but that's where it ends her belt are always strained, screamed and unsupported plus she uses a disconnected falsetto to reach her high notes and worst of all she has a high and lowered larynx position to fake that artificial tone that she pretends to have to gain that fake soulful sound that she really doesn't have

    • @ElizabethRey97
      @ElizabethRey97  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +RyderC Daniels Oh were to start. First she's not trained. So it's very normal to sound like that. About her strained notes. She actually starts to really strain mostly when singing higher than E5. The notes lower than E5 are mostly intentional rasp for soul and rock purposes (she has belted MANY times two exact notes in two different locations and one of them is "strained" (rasped rather than strained) and the second one was clean as fuck. I have MANY videos in my channel backing up my claims and many of the youtubers agree. She also can support up to E5 on a good day (now not so much but back then, till 2012, she could've had. Watch my 'Part 1-2: Christina Aguilera's Best Vocals (G#4-G5). Also not long ago, I discovered something non of us though Christina would do (since she isn't professionally trained) and that are VOCAL TRANSITIONS (Also in my channel. One of them is in What A Girl Wants which is in my latest video, and the other is in Little Dreamer from Bionic) from falsetto/HV

    • @ElizabethRey97
      @ElizabethRey97  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +RyderC Daniels falsetto/HV to chesto voice WITHOUT breaks between the transition. This shows that she can connect her registers. Artificial Tone??????? Where have you been? This has been proven to be wronge a long time ago.
      First, you can't sing with an artifical tone in all 3 registers. Can you fake your tone in singing F5s and G5s for example? No.. Let's say you are singing with an artificial tone in the middle register. Once you go higher (F5+), your real tone should start to be heard rather than that fake made up tone bcz you can't control a fake tone in the upper registers. But that's not the problem with Christina, she sounds 90% the same in all the registers.
      Second, if you're thinking that her 'real tone' is heard and used in songs from Bionic or But I'm A Good Girl, than this shows that you are one of those people that read those claims of Christina and went along with them. Those girly tones are the fake ones. Everyone can use that girly/madonna type voices.

    • @ElizabethRey97
      @ElizabethRey97  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +RyderC Daniels Also, she SOMETIMES, lowers her larynx to add more volume and NOT to fake a tone. Please explain to me how one's voice and tone change when they sing with a lowered larynx. Plus, if she lowered her larynx to have that artificial tone, then howcome when she goes higher to the upper register (F5+) she still sounds the same?? Huh? She raises her larynx mostly when she sings upper chest notes, and you're saying lowering the larynx gives you an artificial made up tone. So howcome when she sings upper tones that are sometimes sung with a HIGH LARYNX, sound exactly the same as when she sings low notes/middle chest notes? The reason why she has a dark voice now is because of years of vocal abuse which she prefered (she could have had a vocal coach but she didn't want to let go of the rasp that abused her vocal chords). I hope now you understood her now better and stop typing studid crap someone irrelevent typed sometime ago.

    • @ElizabethRey97
      @ElizabethRey97  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +RyderC Daniels Shakira fakes her tones. That's why she sounds wrong when she sings live 90% of the time. She sometimes suffers when singing the most basic voices. Also, one more proof. If you really claim she has a fake tone, (which still sounds better than any tone I've heard), then why is it that her fake tone and voice sounds MUUUCH better than her actual tone that you think is heard and used in What A Girl Wants or like some songs in Bionic? It doesn't make sense. You can't sound better than when you sing with a real tone. It's impossible
