Youre an idiot... Etta didn't like the fact that beyonce was singing her song in front of the president and didn't get invited on stage to sing, also the movie version, which you can assume beyonce didnt have much creatve control over... Was kinda butchered. But Beyonces live version is clearly better .. She hated beyonces version because it was also for a movie.. Look at beyonces live version, and tell me christinas is better.. B is just much more soulful. Christina relys on the runs to make her sound better than what it is(not saying she has a bad voice) And aguilera did not portray etta perfect, as you say. This song is about the feeling, not how well you can sing it... You reeeeeaaaaaly need to check yo self fool
I dont get the rant. Christina couldn't hav e sung it with more feeling. She gave it all she's got to tribute Etta in her own way. Christina btw, can.sing with out runs and is amazing. Runs are her thing so she do it. to say beyonce is better than Christina is laughable though.
jared jones on a technical point of view beyonce better than xtina but singing isn’t about technicality. Singing is about expressing yourself vocally on an emotional level that christina is very good at and that’s why she became one of the most iconic/influencial voices and singer of all time. If beyonce and christina were to duet live beyonce wouldn’t be heard or will sound mediocre because christina has too much of a powerful voice for her to keep up with.
If you heard christina aguilera's tribute to James Brown in the grammys which was actually hailed one of the most unforgettable grammy moments of all time, you'll understand why she sings this way. She sing the way other rnb soul singer sing and put her own twist to it. And to those saying she's faking it by lowering your larynx, well she has been consistent and sustained that vocal texture I must transformed that faking to an actual skill! She is a soul singer, and she was applauded by many amazing artist and institution in the world as one of the most greatest vocalist of all time. If the time comes she passed away, her name will be remembered and commemorated as a music legend!
First of all Christina was singing like Etta oils have wanted her to. Have any of y'all ever heard Etta sing live? She never sings it like the recording track she gets into it soulfully and will change lots of things just as Christina is doing. That was Etta's style and Christina was respecting it
What Christina Aguilera has that separates her from all the 'TECHNICAL SINGERS" out there, SOUL!!!! SOUL can't be taught. It can't be imitated. It's raw and God-given gift. Christina Aguilera is blessed to have such soul in her voice.
@@caleviwin ??? I think you need to re-read my comment.. I asked do HE/SHE know what it means to have soul... since he wrote the initial post about soul….. anything else ?
Oh yes Miss Christina! She took it to church on everybody that day ya'll! That is the Christina soulful vocal runs I love to hear her do because she does it so damn well and I wish she'd sing more soul songs much more often! Still she did a magnificent job honoring her idol and I know Etta was so proud of her looking down from heaven!
Etta James herself met Christina, praised her and loved Christina's rendition of her song. Her own family invited her to perform and no one else for a reason. Just look at everyone at the funeral standing up, giving a standing ovation and recognising this soulful performance. Whether or not her particular singing style is to your taste is up to you, and you can say that Christina butchered it or not. But comments like how Etta must be "rolling in her grave" are not for you to say, and they'd be completely inaccurate.
She sang like church! She sent Etta off in style. She's so little like Etta was when she was young and you could tell Christina genuinely loved Etta. Etta is one of my favorites and Christina did her homegoing justice! Those of you criticizing, must have never been to a Black funeral or a Black Baptist church service.
The only thing that bothered me wasn't her performance. It was fine to me. It was those people who are on their phones recording her performance at a fucking funeral
In this ridiculous world anyone will be pleasured. I have been listening to Xtina for a very long time, I know how hard was this for her, how she pushed herself for not to cry. She just tried to give her best, for me this was very emotional, soulful and touching, and she just wanted to throw away that feeling with that note with all her heart!!!
Gotta love all the comments saying Christina was awful and how Beyoncé was better... There's a room full of people who not only loved Blues, but knew Etta and are Blues musicians giving Christina a standing ovation. If you like Beyoncé's version better, you have no idea what soul is. period.
Beyoncè did it soulfully too. You ARE THE ONE WHO DOESN'T KNIW WHAT SOUL IS! What was so bad about Beyoncè performance? She, just like Christina poured out her soul into the song. What's different about the two performances? And Christina sounded great until that riff she did at the end. If that's what you call soul, you're a fucking hypocrite because Beyoncè does it too.
No, Beyonce is not a soulful singer. Everything she sings is planned and rehearsed to death. Her approach to everything she sings is how to come across a certain way instead of feeling it and letting that take you wherever. Beyonce a great singer in that she has great technique, but soulful she is not. Beyonce's idea of soul is what comes across, not because she feels it but because she knows that is what people will interpret as soul. There's a big difference between the two singers.
I get your point and I kind of agree but hands down Beyoncé is the better singer she was and she will always be. Christina is foremost oversinging nowadays and back in her "prime" she was imitating the greats like Whitney and Mariah espeically Mariahs whistle notes with a false falsetto and on this tribute she is also imitating and not delivering something personal. Most at the time she screams especially around 3:10 the for you are MINE is straight screaming for 10 or more seconds and absolutelty horrible she sounds like she is having menstrual cramps. Also this is the reason why her technique is lacking and her voice often breaks. This is also not by a mile soulfoul only imitating the greats while not knowing the personal insturment fo 100%. If she would have stayed from the begining of her career voice wise in her lane she wouldnt sound so struggling nowadays. Meanwhile Beyoncé knows her vocal lane and stays true to her and perfetctioned her instrument and voice she became better and better and can truely use all facets of it.
I am never disappointed with Christina. She is an amazing vocalist. I absolutely loved this. She put the grunt and soul in this song. I know Etta is proud of her.
Mmmm.... not sure how "healthy" they are after all that squeezing. She has unhealthy technique in her high belts and thats why she always goes hoarse in the middle of them. You'd think after a couple decades of vocal training she'd develop a solid mix. She has so much potential but I hate to see and hear her destroying her voice belt after belt.
@@ghendrix2264 OK. It's a saying, no need to take it so literally. I'm sure her lungs are anatomically in tact if that makes you feel any better? We can both agree on the bad technique tho, which is what I was getting at.
The people not appreciating this, are the people who’ve clearly never watched Etta James sing live. She was gritty and emotional and amazing. Just like this performance by Christina.
I believe a lot of people don't realise that Etta was alive for a long time prior to Christina doing this version at Etta's funeral. Etta had said to Christina that she loved the way Christina sang the song, and that is why she was chosen to sing it at her funeral, as a tribute. I love both of them and both of their versions. ✌🏾️❤️
This was the performance that made me truly respect Christina Aguilera as an artist. Paying tribute to the legend Etta James with a personal but also faithful rendition of her classic song. Truly beautiful. The guy at the end saying "give her another hand" really sums it up.
YES! There was a moment close to the beginning (the camera was closer) where you it was obvious that the Lord was blessing and anointing Christina. More chillbumps.
For the people saying she oversang or messed up the song: You morons obviously don't understand the blues or the music of the late Ms. Etta James. You probably heard this song in the Zales commercial and lumped it in with all the other pop tunes of yesteryear. Well, this version (and Xtinas outfit) are fitting tributes to our fallen Queen of Sass & Soul. Ms. Aguilera is THE ONLY SINGER with the Etta stamp of approval when it comes to this song, so have several seats. In this case, have a pew.
There are multitudes of singers..all the time long days. They sing, but few SAAAAANG. Drenched with respect for a fellow artist, the highest honor, beyond the audience. Brava !
Some people complain bout how Christina sings, and that Just shows how poor their knowlege bout music is. The greatest singers of all time use to "scream" way more than she does. For exemple Patty LaBelle, Aretha, Jennifer Holiday and even Etta herself. And all these women are considered legends today.
Haha 50 percent? Of Christina Aguilera? Its a lot mannnn. I mean being a vocalist, I seriously want to sing ike her and if I achieve that I'm sure I would become one of the best vocalists of the world. She is the Queen man. Oh I really want to sing with her.. And about other people? Let's just not give the attention to existence of bad comments about her, which they seek🙌❤
No, "Up out" is the correct venacular use of words. Opting to use grammatically correct syntax of Standard English, "out of" would not capture the way I want my comment read.
You people who are talking crap about Christina and how she is singing this song ... obviously are not fans of Etta James ... or you would know that Christina sang this the way ETTA would have wanted ... they actually were admirers of each other and had very similar styles and voices ...
Amen. Etta even said Christina did the best covers of this song. People think this is too much riffing, but people don't freak when pianists do this to the melody, or saxophone players. This is the jazz realm, and the voice has the right to do runs as well. It's an improvisational instrument, and people of the popular culture just don't understand.
what's wrong with you guys. She sang her heart out. I dont hear any over singing or whatsoever.. Her voice is just so beautiful.. People now a days are so judgmental!
I have read so many disparaging comments about Christina on this and other threads regarding her singing of this song... So if any of you were true Etta fans, you would already know that the way Christina sang this song is very close to her own personal style of singing, further Etta had a great respect for Christina and the way she sang her songs... smh...
Agreed. This is a performance for Etta, not for pedestrian spectators appeal. Its her way to honour to the best of her ability from one great to another. Christina didnt consider how anyone else but Etta would receive it.
Knock the young lady all you want but she sang it like she was raised in the Pentecostal church. That's how they sing to a point. She did well and held her own. People who aren't fond of runs and the like I get where you're coming from. But truth is most of your major R&B, Jazz and POP singers came from that origin or genre, they only let go of their roots to appeal to the mainstream. That's why people like Patti Labelle or Aretha Franklin aren't as popular, they came from that origin and it used to be acceptable. Etta came from such an origin, just like Mahalia or Beyoncé or Fantasia or even Whitney know they had to give up the run and falsetto that is a standard in old school churches. It's just what being mainstream is about I guess, it's amazing to me that even many jazz singers gave up doing runs or scat. Many modern Gospel singers have given up those roots even though that's where they learned to use their voice like an actual instrument. At the end of the day I know its about getting paid to do what you love but I really miss people who have such vocal control. For a latina to have her ability when it's not a foundation of Latin music, is a wonderful gift that she gets no credit for. God knows J-Lo couldn't do a run to save her life. End of my rant, I apologize to the pop purists.
You're so on point. Besides this is not a cover song. It's expression one has for another. It love. Etta was one of Christina's inspiration. She sang from her heart.
DeleriumLuke technically it is a cover since it's etta's song not hers...well it became her "signature" song ie the one she was most famous for. tho really this and etta's versions were both covers since it was originally done 1st by glen miller trumpeter ray anthony in 1952...etta's version wouldn't be recorded till 1960 produced by the late great leonard chess of chess records...but then none of this silly bullshit really matters cuz it's a great song and both etta and christina pretty much blow the flippin doors off any place no mater what they sing. :D incidentally if you haven't had a chance to check it out you can watch cadillac records on crackle.com for free. it's a fantastic movie about etta and many of the other legends of the chess records era :D
it's kind of like watching a guitar player. a hack goes on for 10 minutes and gets boring after 4:30. a virtuoso knows when the hell to shut up and let the rest of the band play something. can you guess which one this girl is? :D
Kewl Beans She was singing to Ella...not you, or any of us who were fortunate enough to be here for this. Sometimes you just have to let art flow over you....................this was art.
Etta would be proud. Christina sang THIS VERSION to her, the same way, and Etta herself actually said she liked it better THIS way. So no hating on her "overdoing it". If your idol tells you that your version of their song is better than theirs, you continue doing it that way.
+fluffy rush you didn't make anything clear. you made it out as if it was a competition between two amazing singers. let them be and let them be different.
Christina did it so damn amazing and flawless, think about it. She's singing at ETTA JAMES funeral! The woman who inspired her , why wouldn't you give it all you got ? Etta adored Christina and I'm sure she would of loved this. I'm sure she did enjoy it. R.I.P
a lot of people are commenting about her "screaming" and "unnecessary grunting" . well lets see, last time i checked if everyone can scream and grunt like her there would be a lot more artist signed to record labels. sooooo next time saying shes doing the most remember you cannot sing or else you wouldnt be watching youtube videos of people getting thousands to millions of views, you would be in them 😘
Immanuel San Screaming is not an issue, it's a stylistic effect. Rock n roll and Metal are made essentially of this kind of distortion and so few people are capable of screaming that well. Try to scream like christina and speak later
@@lamorosioriginals8216 you could say whatever you want to say. But Christina just ruined everything. It's not a good style for her. She lost dynamic, sometimes she's going flat and crack her voice. And you ask me if i could scream like her 🤣 hell no.
Over singing should not be a thing! When you pour your heart and soul into a song, you don't just "sing" the song, you improvise, fluctuate the range or increase it to suit your voice. Most of today's singers barely do runs or improvise and the song get's old. Look at the 90's singers! The songs had the same melody but their singing and incredible improvisations made it sound more epic LIVE! That is the true testament as to whether a singer is a VOCALIST or a generic Pop artist!
Christina you did Etta James proud.Thank you 🙏 God for giving us these beautiful talented women.Angels on earth.Lord your generosity to your children we are so grateful for your love.
Still listening in 2021. Love Etta not a huge Christina fan. Because she doesn't truly get to express who she total is in her music. This is who Christina really is. She's gritty, bluesy and R&B. Yet she's branded a a pop singer. So they water her down, to fit in a pop category.
Nope. Beyonce actually knows how to control her voice and not over sing every single little note. I'm sure Christina Aguilera could find a way to over sing twinkle twinkle little star lol.
The fact that Christina’s voice is so strong and powerful even with the mic is a further from her mouth really speaks volumes. Her vocals are so unmatched.
The cleavage isn't a problem. Etta was known as music's original bad girl. I'm pretty sure Etta would have approved. She adored Christina and her talent. Christina was heavily influenced by Etta. You can see that in the way she gives all of her heart into each performance. She's not vocally showboating. She's showing you what a true performer/entertainer does.
No.. No. I would like to state my opinion XD Christiana over does it waaaaaaaay too much. It's annoying tbh. I think Beyonce blew her out of the water.n
Etta James and Whitney Houston passed away in the same year. Whitney has her tribute in the Image Award, performed by Yolanda Adams (feel free to search and watch that video yourself). Yolanda literary roared like a furious tiger in there, and people say Xtina was over singing in here??? Screaming in singing isn't unprofessional, it shows how strong the feelings of the singer are. If the whole career of Christina Aguilera is basically just over-singing, ppl wouldn't call her the Voice of this generation! Please...
Here's what I don't understand...Why do people think that their comments are actually going to change the way that Christina sings? She has established herself from a very young age with this "signature" sound. She has proven to be an excellent vocalist, has dramatically improved her technique over the years, and has given jaw-dropping performances still to this day. Who cares if she has a couple records that didn't sell as well as her previous ones?! She herself said that it's not about the amount of records that you sell, but the quality and personalized style that you put in your music to help inspire others. C'mon people! We are all the same inside, we all have feelings, and sitting here unnecessarily criticizing someone with extremely negative banter is out of line. If you don't have something nice to say, just keep it to yourself. No one likes being bullied and that's what I have been reading in this thread. Christina, I have been a fan for many years, love your voice, your confidence, and your love for music and others. Keep being an amazing role model! We love you to the end, sister! Xoxo
Another angel, thank you music goddess, whoever you are for introducing me to Christina. Let's just keep telling everybody all about it, go back to our roots ... singing the blues gets rid of it, as all you blues people like me know. I feel tremendous gratitude to TH-cam for bringing the whole world of music (and more) to my little laptop with a big screen. At 84, I guess I'm just a lucky so-and-so.
The fact that she got a STANDING OVATION at a funeral from Etta’s loved ones and family members only proofs that she did her justice. What a voice!!

If the time comes she passed away, her name will be remembered and commemorated as a music legend!
cristina ya es inmortal con su voz como la nombraron la voz de nuestra generacion
My all times favorite.
Because she grew up, listening to their music by way of her grandmother Etta James in Mahalia Jackson, wear her inspirations
Amen!! Christina can blow period!! And has soul all through her vocals!
Having a raspy voice doesn’t mean you have soul... do you know what it means to have soul ?

Christina’s voice is just incredible. What a powerhouse. ♥️
She killed it to me, I love Christina Aguilera , she got down. Gone girl, with some Soul.
She was in pieces and she still managed to nailed with this performance.
It was those people who are on their phones recording her performance at a fucking funeral
ikr
its 2016. but with all due respect, they should've just shut it down or keep it down low.
Yes Nathan! That was the one thing that bothered me too
Funeral yes, but the TELEVISED funeral of an iconic blues pioneer, with a pop icon signing her signature hit song in tribute; in 2016 no less.
wo! watch the lingo bro. No F bomb let's show some respect. This is Etta James funeral.
+buggabuggaboy That's your opinion.
+Paul Son im Portuguese soooooo..... i don't know what that means!
I u3
Killed it.. Sang girl that range amazing..you can tell ppl no nothing about vocals that's was amazing..
There's a big difference between the two singers.
celifacejones you obviously don't know what you're talking about. Your opinion tho
agree :-* Christina is more better...Who is Beyonce?? ooh yes she is queen with shake ass....in sings is queen Xtina...
She has the best voice of the world!!!! she is SO BEAUTIFUL!! I love her!!
Lol. Not really.
Hey David Palomares you're so right on buddy she is and has been the voice of our generation, but you know that haters are always going to hate....
David dm me
That’s how you perform for a legend’s tribute
some call it screaming, some call it art. I call it amazingness.
Hearing this gave me goosebumps... Christina’s talent is undeniable
Christina Aguilera is AMAZING!
I am never disappointed with Christina. She is an amazing vocalist. I absolutely loved this. She put the grunt and soul in this song. I know Etta is proud of her.
Holly Mother of God!!! That was absolutely amazing!!! What a healty lungs!
Mmmm.... not sure how "healthy" they are after all that squeezing. She has unhealthy technique in her high belts and thats why she always goes hoarse in the middle of them. You'd think after a couple decades of vocal training she'd develop a solid mix. She has so much potential but I hate to see and hear her destroying her voice belt after belt.
Alvaro López swear the has a third lung
Are u kidding me? 😂😂😂
@@choochd her bad techniques will dominantly affects her vocal chord, not on her lungs. So its kinda correct to say that she has a healthy lungs
Just like this performance by Christina.
i mean...just incredible. no words. no one compares to christina aguilera.
Christina is killing it. Best voice of her generation!
Did anyone else get chills at the beginning and end
Amen to that! This woman has one of the most beautiful voices IVE. ever heard in my 40 years of life!!
Douglasville Darling um, yeah!

YES! There was a moment close to the beginning (the camera was closer) where you it was obvious that the Lord was blessing and anointing Christina. More chillbumps.
I got the chills listening to her she sound so amazing ! R.I.P Etta James
For the people saying she oversang or messed up the song:
You morons obviously don't understand the blues or the music of the late Ms.
I totally AGREE!
Well said: )
oh shut up and sit down. u obviously know nothing about singing
Etta James stole this song. Its not hers.

THE VOICE of our time. Her pipes pack power- Holy Bible 😍 🔥💖
This is honestly one of her best tributes. No oversinging, just a raw, soulful performance. I love her runs here
There are multitudes of singers..all the time long days. They sing, but few SAAAAANG. Drenched with respect for a fellow artist, the highest honor, beyond the audience. Brava !
She is amazing, great soul voice. Go girl!
Lol your profile pic is hilarious 🤣
Some people complain bout how Christina sings, and that Just shows how poor their knowlege bout music is. The greatest singers of all time use to "scream" way more than she does. For exemple Patty LaBelle, Aretha, Jennifer Holiday and even Etta herself. And all these women are considered legends today.
Phillipe Ramos they are belt not scream
Exactly, they know nothing!!!
many people say "Christina is bad", but i say: try to sing 50 percent of what Christina sings...
Haha 50 percent? Of Christina Aguilera? Its a lot mannnn. I mean being a vocalist, I seriously want to sing ike her and if I achieve that I'm sure I would become one of the best vocalists of the world. She is the Queen man. YellowRoseOvTx lololol xDDD
YellowRoseOvTx out "of"
No, "Up out" is the correct venacular use of words.
So if any of you were true Etta fans, you would already know that the way Christina sang this song is very close to her own personal style of singing, further Etta had a great respect for Christina and the way she sang her songs... smh...
No way. All these pop tarts way over sing to try to show their vocal range. Started with Whitney. Etta gave the song just what it needed.
DeleriumLuke
technically it is a cover since it's etta's song not hers...well it became her "signature" song ie the one she was most famous for. tho really this and etta's versions were both covers since it was originally done 1st by glen miller trumpeter ray anthony in 1952...etta's version wouldn't be recorded till 1960 produced by the late great leonard chess of chess records...but then none of this silly bullshit really matters cuz it's a great song and both etta and christina pretty much blow the flippin doors off any place no mater what they sing. :D
incidentally if you haven't had a chance to check it out you can watch cadillac records on crackle.com for free. it's a fantastic movie about etta and many of the other legends of the chess records era :D
Couldn´t have said it better. I personally love the runs, they are the factors that distinguish a mediocre singer from a great singer.
it's kind of like watching a guitar player. a hack goes on for 10 minutes and gets boring after 4:30. a virtuoso knows when the hell to shut up and let the rest of the band play something. can you guess which one this girl is? :D
Kewl Beans She was singing to Ella...not you, or any of us who were fortunate enough to be here for this. Sometimes you just have to let art flow over you....................this was art.
It sounds like Etta's spirit is living through Christina, INSANE JOB!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Etta would be proud. Christina sang THIS VERSION to her, the same way, and Etta herself actually said she liked it better THIS way. So no hating on her "overdoing it". If your idol tells you that your version of their song is better than theirs, you continue doing it that way.

@@farrionspencer3995 Don't be hypocrite. This is screaming.
Christina singing Etta James' song couldn't be better! Love them both and this was a beautiful performance!

Still listening in 2021. Love Etta not a huge Christina fan. Because she doesn't truly get to express who she total is in her music. This is who Christina really is. She's gritty, bluesy and R&B. Yet she's branded a a pop singer. So they water her down, to fit in a pop category.
Beautiful. Love that rendition, I know Etta heard and will thank you when she sees u
Love her man she can just put So much power and soul in to any damn song

That girl can sing she did that 🙌🙏👌👍👏
Outstanding performance and tribute! RIP Ms. ETTA JAMES and Thank you ♥️🌹♥️
The cleavage isn't a problem.

There aren't screams. This is passion. Love of one artist to another. Enjoy the talent.
Beautiful beautiful soulful Miss Etta James give her her roses she have truly always deserve, you made the world a little more bearable
Please...
Who cares that Whitney killed herself. Should we feel bad that she let herself go? NO!
thanks for that recommendation on Miss Adams, that was moving.
like no one calls her the voice of this generation ever anymore, literally no one
soerenlynge You're that no one. so yah literally just you
Ca Ka No, just face it - no one calls her that. Thats what people and the media call Beyonce
That voice went through me. Amazing!
Xoxo
Tanner Ritzel same reason why you think your thesis of a comment is gonna change anything.
Can we say hallelujah and amen!; chills all over my body. Girl has some soul and pipes
Another angel, thank you music goddess, whoever you are for introducing me to Christina. Let's just keep telling everybody all about it, go back to our roots ... singing the blues gets rid of it, as all you blues people like me know.
