    Wiring is correct, we're required to tie all the joints before an inspection where I am at. Might be easier to draw out how the 3 way works for those that don't completely understand it. In this setup the black and red should be the travelers and the white in the 14-3 carries the neutral from the first power box over to tie with the neutral from the light switch leg. Black from power goes on black screw, red and black from 14-3 go on the brass screws of the 3way switches and black from 14-2 light switch leg goes on black screw of 2nd 3 way. Lots of ways to do 3-ways, however here a neutral has to be in each box just in case a dimmer is added that needs a neutral to make the dimmer work in which case this is the correct way it's done to achieve code requirements. Keep the videos coming!!

    Im amazed at how different electrics are where you're at, compared to Norway. Your code seem to be very strict on certain details, like staple placement, yet there are so many things you are allowed to do that we can not. Like running the wire freely inside the wall. Here, we have to run it in some sort of protective tube or pipe... Also, all your wires and stuff have different names and the boxes and switches look completely different! :D

    Well that was short. Would like to see inspection vid🙏🏻.
    Also, is it code in your area to use firestop (caulking) to fill holes when going through top plate or into another “room” etc... just curious, is all.
    It’s always great to get an awesome inspector; as well as, when doing many jobs & keep getting same person.....makes the process go a little better(at one point, was lucky & had same inspector for 4 yrs in the area worked in).
    Can’t wait till next episode. THANKS Jeff (any chance gonna see more vids w/ your sons?) AND Max for your hard work.
    Cheers✌🏻

    He didn't bother to explain how,the wires go together. Where do the Reds go?

    • @Jeff-xy7fv
      @Jeff-xy7fv 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Reds are travelers, along with the black in the 14-3 cable. White is neutral. Travelers connect to the other two (non-common) terminals of the 3-way switch.

    New code every switch needs a neutral wire so 14-3 is necessary more often then before

  • @didafm
    @didafm 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    Why can't you use a 14/2 for your travellers? Why are you using 3 conductor between switchesm

    • @Jeff-xy7fv
      @Jeff-xy7fv 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Because you need two travelers plus a neutral. Sometimes, if you need to wire something past the second 3-way switch, two runs of 14-2 will be used. One cable is the travelers, and the other is a constant hot/neutral.

    I have a 4-way switch and it feels like I'm solving a Legend of Zelda Puzzle sometimes...

    • @Jeff-xy7fv
      @Jeff-xy7fv 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      4-way switches operate on the traveler wires of a 3-way switch pair. The pair of wires from one cable goes on one side, and the other pair on the other side. The switch may be marked "input" and "output". It doesn't matter which one, as long as wires of the same cable are grouped together on the 4-way switch.

    While you're on the topic of switches; how would you figure out what a switch operates when you've checked all the lights and outlets in the vicinity and nothing reacts. It's a switch on a bank of 3, left operates ceiling light, middle is the mystery, right operates an outlet.

    • @stonee1968
      @stonee1968 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Maybe there was a ceiling fan at some point where the 3rd switch controlled the fan?

    • @nightxxowl1215
      @nightxxowl1215 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Did you check both receptacles on each outlet you tested in case of a split wired outlet? Also, could just be a dummy switch that's no longer used. Have you verified there is power running to and from the switch?

    • @ryancase2205
      @ryancase2205 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      If you find it's not a switched outlet like @NightxxOwl suggested you could always buy a tone generator from home depot for $75 and trace the wires without having to open up the wall.

  • @Leggir
    @Leggir 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    There are times you can use a 2-wire for the travellers. 😉

  • @Jeff-xy7fv
    @Jeff-xy7fv 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    At 2:40 - Wrong! 14-3 has a LOT of uses besides just 3-way switches. It is used in bedrooms and similar rooms for the light fixture so a ceiling fan can be installed (fan-rated box and 2-gang switch box both required), also for bathroom exhaust fans that include a built-in light. Not to mention cable runs between 120V smoke alarms. The red wire is used as a signal wire so all alarms will sound if one is triggered.

    • @diggler306

      @@HomeRenoVisionDIY I think it's important/valuable for someone attempting to do their own wiring to be made aware that there are several ways to wire a 3 way switch. It can affect how they choose to design their flow. And because there are several different configurations (that can be difficult to grasp the concept of), I think a diagram is nearly essential when explaining it. Even if its just scribbled on the stud.
      - You didn't video putting the 14-3 wire into the 2nd box; just a shot of it done. Didn't identify the 14-2 wire in the box as the "power supply" wire at the time.
      - May have been easier to video pulling the 14-3 from the 1st switch box to the 2nd, so that you are working in the same direction as the flow of power? Better for visual explanation in the absence of a diagram.
      - The video flow was a bit confusing using terminology like "first box", "second box", "other box" since you showed working on the plastic box first and running the 14-3 to the second. But you meant first box as it pertains to the flow of power which could have been supported by a diagram. :)
      It all came together at 4:16 when you went through your quick recap though. I completely understand that you are simply showing your viewers what you guys are doing in this renovation, but from a teaching/learning perspective which is the heart of this channel, I would probably be doing another TH-cam search for how to wire a 3-way switch after viewing this.
      Hope this comes off as constructive and not criticism.
