There is a debate on what part of Australia to grow them in,for example, they say that they need at least a zone 10-11 plant hardiness area to plant them in which is the mid north coast of New South Wales (Newcastle) which is near where I live,it got down to 2°C overnight at its lowest during winter time where I live.
People are saying that they need a tropical zone (11a-11b) such as anything above Mackay for them to reliably survive.
Since I live near Maitland, our zone is somewhere between 10b & 11a,so they should live there if my small papaya trees survived the winter.
The bat plants have been known to survive in the colder part of Florida which is a 9b planting zone where it can get down below 0°C (20°F) overnight during the winter.

I wish every one who does a garden show and tell would please say were you are, so as to give people watching some clue as to how useful is the information, don't take this as criticising you just this type in general, having got that of my shoulders this was great

Hi John, when trying to find a location, a good tip is to click on their channel name, in this case "Paradise Distributors" and then in the top right hand corner click on the "About" button. Then read their description as it frequently specifies a location. In this particular case it is Nambour in Queensland. Kind regards Amy

I’m in the USA Florida zone 11. My bat plant is growing beautifully but the flower buds turn brown and die. Why?

I have one in zone 9 Florida and it took less than a year to give me a flower but not the seed pods. Do they need to be more mature? I grew from rhizome. How long before I can devide the rhizome? I don't always have luck with seeds.
    Thank you

So if I can grow gunnera manicata tinctoria and Kratom trees and the seeds I’d be safe to say I’d have good luck? They all seem to require the same treatment even if they come from two different worlds they are very similar

Hi! Is there a way I can contact you to chat? Mine is putting out it’s first seed pods. They’re only roughly a month old but it’s already putting out another flower. Should I still wait a year? I just read they come from 2 different regions and I believe mine may come from the opposite place as yours as my flowers never rise above the leaves and it has put out 4 flowers so far in the last 6 months or so.

I have a seed that is supposed to be a bat (or aka tacca). It has sprouted, the seed even looked like what the actual seed is, but I am concerned it is something different? Can someone please help me, I can send a picture of the plant, i just want to make sure, I don't want to grow something I don't want. I was really excited about this plant, now I'm not even sure it's the right plant 😔 someone please help me.

I've got some tubers of this plant and have planted them in a mix of bark, orchid mix and a very small amount of good potting medium.
As they're tubers how should I go about watering them and how long might I expect (given the right amount of humidity etc.) before I see signs of growth from the tubers?
Any advice would be very welcome as I tried last year but overwatered the tubers and they rotted.

They are prone to root rot...so its better to underwater than over....u can observe the leaves in the morning, if they droop slightingly, then its time to water....the leaves naturally droop if they are exposed to sun/wind, but will perk up again in the morning...
