Good video, very true to life. We are very happy with our Lyric great always having a full tank (80%) every time you leave the house. We've talked to other EV owners and universally they praise Petro Canada fast chargers as being well priced and in service. We received a $750 FLO charger credit when we purchased the vehicle, and are considering driving Toronto to Phoenix return for an adventure and to use up the credit. We are trying to understand what machines accept the FLO credit in the US but it's difficult to figure out. We were dismayed to see apps like my Cadillac and Charge Hub estimate the total charge expense to be around $1200 Cdn, that's more than twice it would cost to do the trip in my V6 gas engine SUV, still we're liking the idea of using super cruise on the 36 hour drive.

It's pretty hilarious to see the huge difference in comment sections where EV drivers are talking about their actual experience, versus where people who have never driven an EV are making comments about EVs.
(Or, dare I say, perhaps where people have been directed to make comments on behalf of someone)
EV owners tend to be very happy with their cars. Even in the case of GM and Ford, where road tripping is a bit weak compared to Tesla or Rivian, still the Lyriq and Bolt and Mach-e and Lightning drivers almost unanimously love their cars / trucks.
The contrast between people who have the experience, and those who don't, is really stark.

Let me start by saying this was an excellent video as a person thinking of entering the EV market and the lyric to top it off. It really help me with some thoughts I had and concerns though it did not settle my concerns. I’m still undecided not sure if I have the patience, plus I feel it’s gonna cause me to spend more money while waiting then if I just stopped at a gas station, I think once the adapter is out for the Tesla stations, it won’t be as bad

Power is measured in Kilowatts. It's the amount of energy the charging station pumps into the battery every second. Energy is measured in Kilowatt-hours. It is equal to the power (in kilowatts) multiplied by the time the battery was connected to the charging station. Hence kilowatt-hours.

I can fill up my suburban in Sarnia Ontario and almost make it to Bowling Green KY 150km short of getting there in one tank and I would get there in one day. On your first charging stop, you used the 350kw charger. Was that the only one available? If there were smaller chargers there, why would you plug into the 350kw when your batteries won't take that charge? Seems to me you are blocking other cars that could use the higher powered chargers.

    • @davidmenasco5743
      @davidmenasco5743 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

I believe all the chargers at the GM Energy sites are the same.
But if there were 150kW chargers, the Lyriq would charge significantly slower on them. The 350kW chargers provide both more power and more current, and a faster charge.
For more details, you can see the comment by NewsCoulomb on the video at the State of Charge channel, about road tripping in a Lyriq.
Lithium powered EVs are still a new technology, and a lot of learning is taking place around them. These videos are very helpful as part of that process.

Dude, yes, you are VERY new to EV'S and do not understand EV'S yet, but you can learn. The size of the battery does NOT make batteries able to charge faster. It's the "C" rate and the makeup of the battery. Kia 77 kwh packs can charge around 220 to 240 kws. So that proves your statement wrong.

Interesting. I just acquired a Cadillac Lyriq. I haven’t done any fast charging on the road yet, but I remember reading that the maximum kilowatt capacity on the road was (77 miles per hour, DC charging).
on the Tech was 11.57 KW, (31 miles per hour, AC charging), while the Luxury and Sport were 19.2 KW, (51 miles per hour, AC charging) level 2.
I assumed there was an advantage for high speed charging as well (on the Luxury or Sport) when on a road trip.
      I honestly don’t know now. 🤷🏻‍♂️

The people talking about Lyriq’s slow charging are comparing Lyiq’s 400volt architecture to cars with 800volt architecture. They are talking about dc fast charging.
You are right about the Lyriq’s ac charging. It is faster than most, especially with the upgrade.
To be fair the Lyriq has a longer range than cars like the Hyundai that charge faster than it.

To charge fully takes a long time. It is a financial wreck for many companies. How many have filed for bankruptcy. Tesla works because they built their own chargers. As I’ve said around town fine, long distance doesn’t work. Watch the CEO of Ford with his EV truck. Disaster. What percentage of EV owners are going back to ICE, and why? EV S will never account for a high percentage in sales and use. Nobody is addressing the fact that outside of Tesla nobody is buying a used EV,why? What are you going to do with all those depleted batteries. Most people are leasing them and they’re not going back for seconds. Face the facts,EV’S have place but not as your main vehicle. And lastly look at what the winter does to the batteries half your range gone until the spring. Enjoy.

@@nathanielwilson1899 Gosh, FUD much? You're making up so much stuff, it's hard to know where to begin.
Let's see, something like 75% of the EVs on the road in the US are Teslas. And Teslas really have no problem with road trips.
You are grossly misrepresenting EV road trip videos. The VAST MAJORITY of these videos feature Teslas. And almost every one demonstrates that road tripping in a Tesla is no problem.
Your comment about used EVs makes absolutely no sense. Every used car that drives, sells. It's just a question of price. Right now, many EVs depreciate almost as fast as a gas powered BMW. But, it's a new, cutting edge technology. So OF COURSE THEY DO.
As far as batteries, every company that recycles batteries wants them. And several companies specialize in just recycling lithium ion batteries and EV batteries.
But wait! When, eventually (after 20+ years) EV batteries lose enough capacity to be retired from the road, they still have about ten years of use left, for stationary storage applications. So it's gonna be a long time before those recyclers see very many EV batteries.
Last but not least, plenty of people never take long road trips, or do so only rarely. All of these people would be fine with any EV, except maybe the Leaf. We're talking about close to half of all drivers in this group alone.
Oh, and one more point: EVs will eventually reach very close to 100% of auto sales. As the impacts from climate change keep worsening, at an accelerating rate, the transition to EVs will only become that much more urgent.

Stops don’t have to be like a NASCAR pit crew, but sometimes you WANT them to be or NEED them to be. I want to be the one to make the decision, not the car. Your experience was far from worst-case and still highlighted a number of frustrations with EV road trips. Sorry, but I have zero interest in road tripping any EV, especially when traveling with kids who just want to get where we’re going. And the previous poster who mentioned security concerns at charging stations made a very valid point that you disingenuously blew off. Sorry, you can’t say sitting at a gas station for 5 minutes filling up is anything close to comparable to sitting at a DC charging station for 40+ minutes . It’s just not, and everyone knows it. Granted, it would help if the Lyriq had a better charging curve, which is a common criticism.
I appreciate you and the channel, and I even appreciate a lot of the qualities of EVs. I particularly like how smooth and quiet they are. However, road tripping one seems like a last resort option, despite the spin you seemed to put on your experience.

    • @Cars_and_Crosbie
      @Cars_and_Crosbie  7 หลายเดือนก่อน +4

Touche that sometimes you don’t want to embrace the time to change and your on a tight schedule, however I don’t think there are many occasions in a given period of time where you can drive 505km uninterrupted. Especially if you have kids. They don’t have the attention span or bladder to be able to handle that kind of stint. And if you do have kids, it’s going to take at least 20 min to get them to disembark from the car (car seats) and feed them and go to the bathroom. In that time you have now added another 200+ km to your range. This now equates to 700km, I wouldn’t want to do more then that with kids even if it was a gas vehicle.
As for safety that’s a difficult one to answer without more context, I live in canada and we are not concerned about our safety sitting in our car while it charges. I understand that this may be a concern in other parts of the world and I will take that into consideration when I do the second part.

having road tripped over 150k miles all over the US in EVs (Chevy Bolt, BMW i4, Cadillac Lyriq), from northern maine to las vegas, and everything between. i have hundreds and hundreds of dcfast charging sessions and not one single time have I ever not felt safe. My wife drove cross crountry multiple times in our Bolt in 2019 by herself. I have never been approached by a person for any reason other than just being curious about the technology. anyone spouting off nonsense about not being safe is just selling fear.
And you never ever drive more than 120-200miles with kids, its impossible. We all have kids or have had kids, we know. And its also impossible to get them in and out of a car, bathrooms, drinks, food, and any other thing happening in less than 20+ mins. In the lyriq, thats wayyy over 2+ more hours of driving. In my BMW, that like 240 miles at 80mph. So a miserable 3hrs, which i wont do, i like being hydrated, going to the bathroom and making sure i avoid DVTs. 2hrs is plenty in one setting.
day i bought my lyriq, i went from
las cruces NM--> springfield MO--> lake geneva WI--> Denver CO--> salt lake city UT--> Denver CO--> des moines IA--> atlanta GA --> las cruces NM. 8400 miles in 4 weeks with all the secondary driving around. Just a big fun 19 state road trip with some of my family, sometimes alone, And Ive never felt inconvenienced. My GF thinks the BMW charges too fast, and i have to agree, you start rushing to get back to it because its craming in miles of range you dont need. The lyriq is more reasonable charge times. I only have to wait on it if i do something dumb like decide to drive a 3-4hr stint.. which is slower over all time than just splashing the bottom and leap frogging chargers.
today i drove from dallas to las cruces while my GF flew, she left 30 mins after me, but only beat me by a couple hours.
EVs are amazingly fun to road trip. Far better than any gas car.

@@Cars_and_Crosbie You can take all the initiative you want, but providing misinformation to your clients who purchase these vehicles is wrong on many levels. How is GM ok with this? Hope they watch this video and at the very least send you for some EV specific sales training. Learn about the product first before making any more videos.

Great video. I have a Mach E. The Lyric and all EVs are not for the impatient and lazy people like me. 😢 Around town, they’re great. Road trips are an all-consuming, mind-bending, nail biting nightmare!

Not so much on the Hyundai products. They charge about twice as fast as most of the affordable competition. The only issue with them is finding a charger in a location where you need it. It’s getting better but it’s not there yet.

Lease because they know if they buy it there is no resale value..simply put these EVS don’t come close to gas for efficient long distance travel. Around town ,ok.
