- A conversation between Peter Thomas (co-founder of PMC), Oliver Thomas (Head of R&D) and myself. PMC recently celebrated their 30th Birthday. We discuss their approach to speaker design, how it has evolved over 30 years and where it may go in the future.

Many years ago, around 1975, I constructed a pair of TL speakers based on a design in Wireless World by Dr. A R Bailey. They were large speakers using KEF B139/T15 drivers. Transmission line had 3 folds filled with long fibre wool. There was very little output from the bottom vent as the TL absorbed much of the driver rear output. They sounded terrific but were inefficient and could not handle much power. My favourite speakers now are large electrostatics. Not perfect but no crossover problems, just a single very fast diaphragm.

In PMC's early days they were exhibiting at an audio show with their professional BB5-XBD system (stands about 8 feet tall) and the much smaller LB1 (about 2 feet tall and quite narrow). People would come into the room and say "Wow, what an amazing sound! What do the little ones sound like?". To which, of course, they'd smile and explain "That was the little ones".

I am a new convert to transmission line speakers! I also had to design and build them myself, because they are not available. We now have software (like Hornresp) that make it possible for even a newbie like me, to get a really good speaker. The complexity of all the acoustics inside and outside of the cabinet can be accurately modeled, with a computer, in my experience.
All the advantages that are mentioned in this interview are true - and I want to add that *because* TL's can get such good and extended bass out of a smaller driver - this then allows even lower distortion - because the driver has lower mass.
My MLTL-6 mass loaded transmission line speaker is 9"w x 21.5"h x 16"d and uses a 6" SB Acoustics woofer, and is essentially flat in room to ~32Hz. And I have a tower version of it designed, with the same woofer, that is 8"w x 39.5"h x 13"d and should extend the bass to ~28Hz.

I have heard a few PMC speakers over the years at shows and wondered what all the fuss was about. however having had the chance to listen to some at home I now own a pair of twenty5 23 and couldn't be happier. I for one go away the wiser, and that must be the hole point of a good interview. Also strangely relaxed.....I mean, living in a world where everything is a competition in hammering out your points without ever listening to what's actually being said....what a bliss....😀
On a side note...you are more than once, shared as a voice of reason and clarity, in different hi-fi groups here in Denmark. Knowing a lot of these guys, I can tell you that is a real acomplicement 🙃

I heard Fact 8 signature and their transparency was astounding. Not sure if I could get along with a speaker that revealing though; it will dictate what I listen to rather than the other way around. But as they said with good recordings you will love what you hear. Kudos to a big brand like PMC coming on the channel.

Really enjoying my twenty5 26 amazing speakers after demos of various speakers it was a close call with proac d48r luckily managed to home demo both sets of speakers found the pmc not to fussy on room placement fantastic sound stage

Really informative video, thanks you. I invested in Meridian Active Speakers, I’m not too experienced to be honest in comparing Active and Passive but to me my Active speakers let off a sound that belies their size.

PMC has been able to build a reputation in only 30 years. That's where passion for perfection and innovation added to the loathe towards cutting corners, pays off. I know that their speakers are great and very often the greatness is out of your reach.
I think the DB1 is still available and costs around £1,600. Not cheap but not ridiculous as far as hifi is concerned 😉
As a Fact 12 user myself I obviously somewhat biased must accolade you on this very interesting video with the PMC family. Once you get used to the quality of transmission line bass, it is very difficult in my experience to go back to a conventional box speaker. Great Video Tarun & ATB Peter

My fondest memory of visiting the PMC factory was during a soundcheck of BB5 XBD, where the guys were using Tron Legacy soundtrack at full blast🤪the clarity at that SPL was astonishing. My IB2 are fantastic, hopefully you get to review some of their big speakers in future.

In my opinion the main difference between studio and home situation is the management of first reflections. Most listeners are not willing to plaster their walls with any kind of diffusors/absorbers. So positioning and toeing in and distancing from the front wall becomes crucial. And of course there is no large console in the way, only the coffee table. That‘s where dsp becomes important, and voilá, we must go active.
Thank you Christian. Interesting point you raise. I bet most professional studios have an RT60 time of around 0.3 secs. What is it in the average living room? Could be as much as 1sec.

I didn’t know what a transmission line speaker was until I watched your excellent interview. I wish the audio had been better, but I realize it’s not something you can control. I would be very curious to give a good listen to a transmission line speaker, as I find myself most attracted to bass and midrange, I can’t hear much of the highs anymore. Age-related hearing loss is real, protect your ear drums, young fellas.

I have Twenty26's and the midrange / base is excellent, the base especially can blow your socks off. I had FB1's before that and they were very good for both as well.

Excellent, good to hear you three discussing a legend of a speaker...always fancied a pair. They would go well with my Bryston 14BSST....ONCE BUILT A PAIR OF Chris Rogers P9TL Transmission lines. Still prefer how the horns couple to a room, but those are a very capable well engineered monitor.

Hi Tarun. Most of what was talked about went way over my head 🤣 but sounded fascinating. PMC speaker's are technically brilliant with how bass is made, when you consider their equivalent size. The passive Vs active arguements were Interesting. I'm a passive fan myself, as I like to mix and match amps, to achieve the sound I want. Interesting interview.

Never heard this brand unfortunately. My only exposure to transmission line speakers was the original Rega Ela. I couldn't believe the basic tension from that tiny 4-in driver! So when I found a pair of the Naos second hand I couldn't resist.
Still running them in a third system with an el34 tube amp. They reach down to 27 HZ and sound nice and neutral . Not bad for an 8-in paper driver and simple crossover :-)

His comments about adding favorable distortion is why I question passe amplifiers "added distortion". Because of originally coming from the movie theater industry, I don't think surround us a gimmick. But I can spend X amount of money on two channels or X in 7 channels. I'd rather have higher quality 2 channel than spread that same $ over 7 channels. Great interview. Thx. I always wanted to tackle transmission line, but have been afraid to due to complex physics that I have yet to find a paper fully describing the math than does not look like quantum physics.

I love my PMCs on my third pair. The only thing better than a pair of PMCs....is a bigger pair of PMCs!!! :D (by the way you've got wrong picture of the IB1 at 2.35 rather than the LB1 they are talking about!).

I agree wholeheartedly - thank you Peter and Oliver. Fantastic insight into the history of PMC. We have a pair of LB1s still in use in our online edit suite. I'm just wondering: the outer foam surround of the bass drivers is decaying (naturally, given the age). Do you offer a re-coning service?

I've yet to hear some PMC's but I've built a couple of transmission line subwoofers which I think sound good. I think it's harder to build them into a full range because of the resonances you get in the upper bass going into the mids

What is non pro? Sound is accurate or not. PMC is more accurate than most & little distortion. ATC is good and fine, but not terribly accurate.
@@scottd9448 It turns out that ATC does not voice their speakers differently as Tarun explained to me in a separate response. But what do you mean by "accurate"? I have heard nothing but excellent things about ATC (including on this channel - see the latest video on the 19A's) and actually I am thinking of buying a pair very soon. Do you have a specific ATC speaker in mind or speakers in their series that you are referring to where it is less accurate?

I wish PMC would voice some of their speakers for non-pro use like ATC does with some of their speakers
All PMC speakers are all voiced the same and it is a similar story with ATCs as far as I am aware. That is what Ben Lilly at ATC told me 😉

I was under the mistaken impression that ATC speakers in the SCM entry series, like the SCM 19 passives you recently reviewed, had a different "sonic signature" than their other speakers; in particular the pro series. Maybe it's the new tweeter in the 19's that's giving this illusion? But my original point is that audiophiles usually complain PMC's sound boring and "too neutral". One of my friends owns a pair and I was rather underwhelmed when I first heard them.

I was super impressed with the SCM 19 passives after your video and started thinking seriously about getting a pair but I remember you mentioning the actives at the end of your video as having better base due to the elongated speaker box used to house the onboard amps. So I decided to research the 19A's and after researching, I got a strong impression that the 19A's are *way* better than the 19 passives (of course they are also more expensive) and anyways long story short, I'm very seriously contemplating getting the 19A's. Look forward to your videos on this!!!
@@hemantishwaran5741 I think the internal enclose on Actives is the same. The extra cabinet space houses the amps. It will be interesting to see how the actives compare to the passives driven by the ATC P1. You can never be certain how things turn out until you try them yourself at home. That is why I requested to have both systems here at the same time. I will see if my initial impressions are correct. Going to be fun finding out 😊
Great bass yes but what about the negatives? Transmission lines have a massive resonance around 150-200Hz. As a result the speech range is not flat and the low mids can sound thin. No free lunch I am afraid.
Thank you Lee. From what I understand, a good TL should flatten the peak of that resonance. I agree, there is never a free lunch 😉
I can confirm this through sonarworks room calibration on my pmc twenty 21. The difference after calibration is outstanding. Roon eq can solve this issue also
As a kid I use to make my own speakers. My biggest one was about 6 foot tall by 3 foot wide by about a foot deep. It had about 7 bass drivers in it. No crossover or tweeters, I saw no point in complicating things 😂

I’m very surprised to hear IMFs and Quad’s ESLs mentioned in the same sentence as they are poles apart in my opinion.
I don’t think Peter was suggesting they same. He eluded that the clarity in the midrange and lack of bass distortion was a common attribute 😉
@@abritishaudiophile7314 - yes, I agree; but even a comparison to that extent I find somewhat ‘ambitious’. I’ve heard many electrostatic speakers and many transmission line speakers (including those by PMC) and I wouldn’t associate this midrange clarity alluded to as a particular transmission line strength, or a quality shared between the two technologies!
@@AudioFlat Then ambitious or not, you will need to accept you feel differently and theres nothing wrong with that. I suspect I understand what he's talking about, but thats based on some live demos of some 50k infinity reference 5s from more decades ago than i care to remember.

God bless IMF. i have a pair of IMF TLS50 speakers the one's you showed in the video clip, if any one wants them you better have some big money available there almost priceless, they have a special sound punchy bass end fast dynamic low end and a superb midrange they have a lot in common with PMC its a certain type of sound

I have 25.21. I find them bright in the mid range,iam sure it's not my electronics as I have luxmanamplifier class a and luxmancd player or maybe I kneed something with more drive like naim,I have been told that the new version is better at the TOP end
They are definitely a little on the bright side of neutral 😊
@@abritishaudiophile7314 I have had Twenty5 23i on home demo for a week. I have been using them with Naim Nait XS3 and Rega Elicit-R, as well as my own NAD C370. I haven't heard brightness, maybe a hint with the Rega but perfectly balanced with the Nait and the warm side of neutral with the NAD. I love them and will probably be buying!

The thing I cannot square with most TL designs I've heard is bass lag. The notion that all reflex or sealed units are higher distortion simply isn't true either. Look at 50 year old Tannoys used at Maidovale. Getting air impedance matching of the port together with optimising tuning point for minimum cone movement was resulting in distortion less than 0.5% thd 50 years ago! No bass lag to speak of either and phase inversion is absolute and matched per channel so not audible.
Nothing wrong with pmc's approach at all. It has some strong merits including efficiency of size but a good big speaker always convinces more than a great small one.
There's good and bad examples of all designs and no golden eared enthusiast will easily be able to differentiate between any bass loading technique unless the TL is poorly done and laggy.
The other thing which is untrue is that you cannot negate standing waves or reflections in conventional speaker designs. You can and it's not difficult. The real issue with none TL cabinets is they're rarely as well braced and stiff as TLs which benefit from the back loaded line as effective bracing.
Every speaker maker claims their's is best. I'm surprised at pmc making such claims. I reject such straw man arguments as all come with compromises and all approaches can be engineered for low distortion....fact.
Also damping factor can be made very high in passive designs so more misinformation or the hairy old chestnut of generalising against passive! There are good and bad examples of active and passive. Pmc talk sense here. My own designs have total losses of less than 0.1 ohms at dcr due to the design of the bass inductors so very little df disadvantage. The main benefit of active is better control of drivers using higher order slopes but iften unecessarily so and often with poorer amplification than possible passively.

Haven't tried anything further up the range, but the entry level Twenty stuff is truly awful in my experience. Why is there a huge dip in the upper mids? Also there is this enormous boost above like 10KHz?! Appaulingly bad speakers in my book, makes me embarrassed to be British.

@@abritishaudiophile7314 maybe they've improved since the first generation, but check out the measurements on audio science review. I had a pair of the 21s and they measured about the same in my living room. No amount of Dirac would fix them either, dead on arrival, total garbage.
