I think the last time I listened to an interview with Tim, it might have been his previous interview with Krishnan Guru-Murthy. This was so wonderful to listen to, and a real antidote to some of the worst that is going on in the world at the moment. Thankyou for posting the interview.🙂
Tim's thoughts and conclusions about the damage that social media is doing to individuals and society,[ to how it is increasingly influencing; moulding & skewing the way we think and feel and judge - and therefore act - all driven my algorithms & profit ] are critically important for parents, educators and politicians to: digest, and to act upon.
Gobsmacked to learn Tim is self taght on the piano {as well as everything else!}. Had assumed he had a classical concert pianist background! Even more impressed. As for working hard at things, to succeed, yes, but, Tim does have several natural advantages. Firstly, he has a creative and enquiring mind and is open to continuous learning. Second, he has a huge intellect and, more important than all of the rest; > Third, he has 'stickability'. The capacity to start, persevere and complete any task he sets his mind to - with total committment. Lot's of people have talent, of various kinds, but not the 'oomph' to carry it through. for various reasons. He is a great role model for going the unconventional route and being open to trying all kinds of new things. We never know what we are good at, or not, unless we try. Great to see him generously committing some time to being inspirational to others.
Can you arrange a very long discussion between Tim Minchin and Stephen Fry? They are my favourite free thinking humans on this planet and their ability to explain difficult topics and relate it back to the human condition is unparalleled. I would pay money to listen to them debate and discuss.
What would they debate? They'd just sit there agreeing with one another on pretty much any topic. Only thing I can think of they might disagree on is the monarchy, and I'm not sure Tim Minchin has very strong opinions on that.
What an interesting interview . I do prefer these more long form formats, where the guest is given the opportunity to unpack things without the pressure of time keeping
I think Tim, we can all be kind to one another (a broad term but for me this feels like civility, decency and the golden rule) while also not condoning or allowing the seeds of hate to grow. In my country a rapist will be president. It doesn’t matter how kind I am, people I know who have been raped have to try and weather this unimaginable outcome in what should be a modern democratic republic. Kindness is good for many things, we also must have a strong and steady course that does not allow truly bad people from dominating us.
I think that being kind has nothing to do with tolerating one's behaviour, no matter how narcistic or sociopathic as it may be. No one has to tolerate, except or "like" that behaviour!! I do think that being kind is about trying to understand where even the "worst" person is coming from, hearing their story and perhaps be willing to put aside our biases and automatic emotional responses which are so fed by the media and internet. Having said that, if anyone ever hurt my kids all my biases, love , energy, investment and compassion would surely kick in and I know exactly what I would at least want to do to such a perpetrator! Whether I did or would be another story 🤣🤣
The "be kind" map offers a valuable starting point for navigating the complexities of ethical behavior. However, its effectiveness is contingent on recognizing the limitations and nuances of the territory. A more effective approach involves: ● Contextualizing Kindness: Considering the specific situation, power dynamics, and potential harm involved in each interaction. ● Balancing Kindness with Other Ethical Values: Recognizing that kindness is not the only moral principle and may need to be balanced with values like justice, accountability, and self-respect. ● Prioritizing Self-Care and Boundaries: Acknowledging that engaging with challenging viewpoints can be emotionally taxing and requires setting boundaries to protect one's well-being. By acknowledging these complexities, individuals can utilize the "be kind" map as a foundation for ethical behavior while navigating the territory with greater awareness and sensitivity.
The world is a far better place because of you, your influence extends well beyond those who you have met, entertained or worked with, it is the 2nd, 3rd & 4th degree of contact that have benefited from your direct contact with so many.

As a ‘straight white’ older man I find myself drifting ever more to the left than I already was though increasingly irritated with the radical left (as much as the far right) which now seems to represent something almost alien to socialist perspectives and often insufficiently informed on geopolitics and history. I find myself agreeing with so much Tim Minchin is saying as he articulates well ideas I’ve long held. Promoting positive narratives is surely the only way we’ll achieve any harmony in human society and address environmental crises also
Same. Old git here who is bucking the trend by moving leftwards. All of which makes me despair because the world is descending into cannibalistic rightism.
I don't think we're bad at long-term thinking at all. It just requires co-ordination and personal trade-offs, and no one wants to be first to sacrifice
I really rebel against the idea that we all have to be informed and have opinions. Why? We can't possibly know everything that's happening on the planet so how do we choose what to be informed about? I gave up on television and social media decades ago. I am entertained and occasionally informed by what _I_ choose on TH-cam, but otherwise I just get on with my life. My parents and grandparents had perfectly happy lives with little or no input from the so called "news" (which is often untrue). I'm happily and peacefully existing without it too. If someone asks what I think about a topic, I just say "I have no opinion about that" and they leave me alone. Mostly 😊. I think if you're lucky enough to be born into a peaceful happy life, why fill it with angst. That does nothing to help the people genuinely suffering.
What’s up with stand-up comedians who get paid to get up on stage and decide in and out groups via public mocking going on TV complaining about people using a social media platform to decide in and out groups via public mocking?
Agree with him. Tyere is a daying in tamil which says, two hands are needed to clap. If one person is abusive and the abused does not react, that act ends there. An eye for an eye makes everyone blind. We have so much hatred and violence in this world. Is it that difficult not to be violent and full of hatred?

Yet, if we hadn't started farming, I guess we would probably not even have books. Farming made modern civilization possible, good and bad.
Pro Humanity is a good start and realising that we all want the same things, we all want to be loved, be fed and a roof over our head. We have allowed politics and religion to divide us, some have mislaid their humanity so it's up to the rest of us to help them find it.
I wonder what his definition of bigot is. In my experience, society labels as bigots, people who hold onto views that they don't agree with, however much they try and persuade them of another perspective. That's not necessarily a bigot. It could well be somebody standing their ground, holding a different, and maybe unpopular, opinion.
I would that his definition is the same, or very similar to this: "a person who won't listen to anyone whose ideas or beliefs are different from his or her own. especially : one who regards or treats the members of a group (such as a racial group) with hatred and intolerance" So a bigot isn't going to listen to another point of view and often they view entire groups people based on something like race/religion etc. in a negative light. Is that you or do you think you've been unfairly labelled by society?
@bluetoad2668 it's not me. But I don't think anybody can call somebody else a bigot with any certainty of being right. Sure, they may be correct that a person us treating a person or people in an unfair and hateful way. But if bigotry describes somebody who won't listen or take account of other people's viewpoints, we can't possibly know that unless the person concerned tells us. We have no way of knowing what somebody else is thinking about or has considered until they tell us. And I think plenty of people are labelled as bigots because they hold an opinion that society in general views as outdated. I think *society* should check *themselves* on whether or not *they're* fully considering the opinions of those they call bigots. I find it's often the case that society has misunderstood or hasn't bothered to listen to a viewpoint that they assume is "old-fashioned" or whatever other negative thing. Hope that makes sense!
e are not always able to access our capacity to be kind so at least we might try not to be unkind. This, in itself, would make a big difference. Love thy neighbour? Its a high bar. At least: commit to doing no harm.
But are the people you have labeled bigots truly that or do you just don’t want to hear a different view point from the one your used to on a daily basis .
I think he would know the difference between someone who simply has different ideas or opinions to him and a bigot who is not open to any new arguments, ideas or who has not really thought deeply or in any considered way about the opinions they hold.A bigot is a person who simply has reactive views or beliefs or opinions based on little evidence but personal prejudices or disinformation, very little research or evidence would support their opinions. They are usually reactive.unable to show workings for their thinking, opinions often based in hate of certain groups or people based on things like race or gender...thats a bigot.Unexamined beliefs and opinions fiercely held onto despite any evidence to the contrary...its not merely a difference of opinion and I'm sure he knows the difference
Hey Tim, if you ever want to leave the UK cities and get out into the real world, would you do a gig with my Somerset based retro rock band? You’d be great and certainly not in any pigeon hole!
It wasn't so long ago that Tim put all his creative efforts into fueling division and heaping ridicule on those he disagreed with. It made him wealthy. It is an uncomfortable truth

I’m very disappointed Tim…you’ve bottled it, fudged it, etc …..from a man setting up the agenda of honesty you’ve just walked away and betrayed those young girls losing their limbs, the brutality, the genocide, the barbarity of it all. You know the agenda…despicable… etc., you know it. You bad man Tim.
I would suggest, that this is exactly one of the comments which informed his decision to leave social media behind. Interesting and somehow sad, that you don't seem able to see that.
I know that woman (Kate Elizabeth Becherer ) If you were born and raised in new York you'd know too, she's my family's Broker for 3yrs till now and a very good one if you asked me. No doubt she is the one that helped you get where you are!!!!
And then did you wake up and galvanise yourself in order to share that somnolence with the rest of us? (I'm afraid I can't share Tim's tolerance with ignorance and stupidity, although I am impressed by his forbearance.)
I love it when this man speaks. My hearing-aids are turned up and I'm compelled to listen to every word. ❤😊
An extraordinary human being. Intelligent, ridiculously talented, solidly grounded and totally self-aware.

$75k biweekly changed my mindset and behavior, my goals, my family and I've to say this video has inspired me a lot!!!!
I'm feeling really motivated could you share some details about the biweekly topic you brought up ??
Big thanks to mrs Kate Elizabeth BECHERER ❤️❤️
Her top notch guidance and expertise on digital market changed the game for me.
I know that woman (Kate Elizabeth Becherer )
If you were born and raised in new York you'd know too, she's my family's Broker for 3yrs till now and a very good one if you asked me. No doubt she is the one that helped you get where you are!!!!
I started with a miserly $1500. The results have been mind blowing I must say TBH
Seems like a nice enough guy (unlike Russell kane) and great piano player and lyricist but never made me laugh. Not once
I fell asleep after the first word
Soothing 😊
And then did you wake up and galvanise yourself in order to share that somnolence with the rest of us? (I'm afraid I can't share Tim's tolerance with ignorance and stupidity, although I am impressed by his forbearance.)
And yet you were still able to tell us
Sounds far too Jesus. On to the Russell Brand ducking stool, while we all have a barbie.
