What a gift to be able to watch this interview with this marvelous artist storyteller human being father. I am touched by his honesty, and his gentle soul... And he is absolutely right, 1000% and I know this is exactly opposite of what he was saying, but I'm so happy he did. Thank you Tim MInchin for sharing your thoughts, and being so humble increasing the value of your words tenfold. I shared this interview with my family to watch. Powerful stuff.
Can you arrange a very long discussion between Tim Minchin and Stephen Fry? They are my favourite free thinking humans on this planet and their ability to explain difficult topics and relate it back to the human condition is unparalleled. I would pay money to listen to them debate and discuss.
What would they debate? They'd just sit there agreeing with one another on pretty much any topic. Only thing I can think of they might disagree on is the monarchy, and I'm not sure Tim Minchin has very strong opinions on that.
I think the last time I listened to an interview with Tim, it might have been his previous interview with Krishnan Guru-Murthy. This was so wonderful to listen to, and a real antidote to some of the worst that is going on in the world at the moment. Thankyou for posting the interview.🙂
Thank you for this lovely exchange! I hadn't heard either one of these gentlemen speak before. I am grateful I felt drawn to do so today. Kindest regards, Jacquie BC Canada
Gobsmacked to learn Tim is self taght on the piano {as well as everything else!}. Had assumed he had a classical concert pianist background! Even more impressed. As for working hard at things, to succeed, yes, but, Tim does have several natural advantages. Firstly, he has a creative and enquiring mind and is open to continuous learning. Second, he has a huge intellect and, more important than all of the rest; > Third, he has 'stickability'. The capacity to start, persevere and complete any task he sets his mind to - with total committment. Lot's of people have talent, of various kinds, but not the 'oomph' to carry it through. for various reasons. He is a great role model for going the unconventional route and being open to trying all kinds of new things. We never know what we are good at, or not, unless we try. Great to see him generously committing some time to being inspirational to others.
Tim's thoughts and conclusions about the damage that social media is doing to individuals and society,[ to how it is increasingly influencing; moulding & skewing the way we think and feel and judge - and therefore act - all driven my algorithms & profit ] are critically important for parents, educators and politicians to: digest, and to act upon.
You're in for such a treat. He truly is multi faceted and extraordinarily talented. Matilda is great and if you like films, look for 'Upright' or if you want something shorter any of his gigs are amazing. 😊
What an interesting interview . I do prefer these more long form formats, where the guest is given the opportunity to unpack things without the pressure of time keeping
The world is a far better place because of you, your influence extends well beyond those who you have met, entertained or worked with, it is the 2nd, 3rd & 4th degree of contact that have benefited from your direct contact with so many.
I suppose TH-cam has recommended this to me because it knows I'd enjoy it. There's a sadness to think that there are so many people that would benefit greatly from Tim's words of gentle wisdom that will never be shown it by the algorithms.
Having watched Tim since his earliest gigs in the UK (250 seaters), his progression as a moral thinker for the world is a path I try to follow... And coming off the majority of social media is probably something I'll also do as a NY resolution. But not Bluesky, I'll stay there.
This is the way forward because if you are nice to someone you disagree with it could eventually lead to dialogue which could lead to educating that person or better understanding why they have the views that they do.
I was privileged to play Berowne in Tim’s Love’s Labours Lost back in 1993, directed by the wonderful Jenny Davis OAM at Midnite Theatre Company, CCGS. 🎼 Oh mistress mine where are you roaming? 🎶
I think Tim, we can all be kind to one another (a broad term but for me this feels like civility, decency and the golden rule) while also not condoning or allowing the seeds of hate to grow. In my country a rapist will be president. It doesn’t matter how kind I am, people I know who have been raped have to try and weather this unimaginable outcome in what should be a modern democratic republic. Kindness is good for many things, we also must have a strong and steady course that does not allow truly bad people from dominating us.
I think that being kind has nothing to do with tolerating one's behaviour, no matter how narcistic or sociopathic as it may be. No one has to tolerate, except or "like" that behaviour!! I do think that being kind is about trying to understand where even the "worst" person is coming from, hearing their story and perhaps be willing to put aside our biases and automatic emotional responses which are so fed by the media and internet. Having said that, if anyone ever hurt my kids all my biases, love , energy, investment and compassion would surely kick in and I know exactly what I would at least want to do to such a perpetrator! Whether I did or would be another story 🤣🤣
the only thing I'd be shouting at you is MORE!, Mr Minchin!, as a target of Ginger racism(lol) I love all your work, I would imagine there would be things we would disagree about, but an argument in its original form is always a life changing thing...keep up the fantastic work with your fantastic group of family and friends sir!
As a ‘straight white’ older man I find myself drifting ever more to the left than I already was though increasingly irritated with the radical left (as much as the far right) which now seems to represent something almost alien to socialist perspectives and often insufficiently informed on geopolitics and history. I find myself agreeing with so much Tim Minchin is saying as he articulates well ideas I’ve long held. Promoting positive narratives is surely the only way we’ll achieve any harmony in human society and address environmental crises also

I really rebel against the idea that we all have to be informed and have opinions. Why? We can't possibly know everything that's happening on the planet so how do we choose what to be informed about? I gave up on television and social media decades ago. I am entertained and occasionally informed by what _I_ choose on TH-cam, but otherwise I just get on with my life. My parents and grandparents had perfectly happy lives with little or no input from the so called "news" (which is often untrue). I'm happily and peacefully existing without it too. If someone asks what I think about a topic, I just say "I have no opinion about that" and they leave me alone. Mostly 😊. I think if you're lucky enough to be born into a peaceful happy life, why fill it with angst. That does nothing to help the people genuinely suffering.
I reckon people would have the same opinions and beliefs if they were on social media or not. People just attract the very things that go on in their minds whether it's online or out in the world. Having said that less time online is better for you.

Agree with him. Tyere is a daying in tamil which says, two hands are needed to clap. If one person is abusive and the abused does not react, that act ends there. An eye for an eye makes everyone blind. We have so much hatred and violence in this world. Is it that difficult not to be violent and full of hatred?
I think you may have missed his point, what I thought he was saying is if you ‘see’ the genocide and that seeing makes you a less kind and compassionate person to the people around you, what benefit has it been. Two wrongs don’t make a right. If it lead you to loving and protecting others, donating to causes which promote compassion and justice which in turn works against the racist attitudes which causes genocide, you have turned that ‘seeing’ into good. That’s what Tim is getting at. Many of the word/video bites (on social media) do not lead to critical thinking about complex issues which in turn to positive actions. They are designed to inflame indignations and partisan biases, leading to destructive actions against others and yourself.
Wow, I have had the same thoughts about the bad consequences of our species starting with farming (militarized societies and huge wars are among them), and I've never heard anyone else saying that - or if I have, they have only spoken about bad health consequences of starting to eat a lot of grains and starch. Yet, if we hadn't started farming, I guess we would probably not even have books. Farming made modern civilization possible, good and bad.
Pro Humanity is a good start and realising that we all want the same things, we all want to be loved, be fed and a roof over our head. We have allowed politics and religion to divide us, some have mislaid their humanity so it's up to the rest of us to help them find it.

I couldn't change a person causing me very serious distress, but I could change the way that I dealt with the situation, including praying for my tormentor (but not only that). Over time my tormentor improved for the better. I had to learn to let go of my hurt. It was a hard lesson but changed me for the better. Hence my "speak for yourself" - meant light heated x
Thank you both of you for this beautiful example of an open and kind exchange that doesn’t resort to defensiveness and doubling down. What’s up with stand-up comedians who get paid to get up on stage and decide in and out groups via public mocking going on TV complaining about people using a social media platform to decide in and out groups via public mocking?
e are not always able to access our capacity to be kind so at least we might try not to be unkind. This, in itself, would make a big difference. Love thy neighbour? Its a high bar. At least: commit to doing no harm.

The "be kind" map offers a valuable starting point for navigating the complexities of ethical behavior. However, its effectiveness is contingent on recognizing the limitations and nuances of the territory. A more effective approach involves:
●
Contextualizing Kindness: Considering the specific situation, power dynamics, and potential harm involved in each interaction.
●
Balancing Kindness with Other Ethical Values: Recognizing that kindness is not the only moral principle and may need to be balanced with values like justice, accountability, and self-respect.

Prioritizing Self-Care and Boundaries: Acknowledging that engaging with challenging viewpoints can be emotionally taxing and requires setting boundaries to protect one's well-being.

I try, often, to be kind.
There is one ideology, rampant ATM, that *demands* I be kind.
I will not.
I know too much.
I'm far too kind to be kind to that mob.
Thus proving that kindness takes effort because you have to engage your brain, wilfully.
We'll look back on this era of social media as if it was some huge inadvertent social experiment. Yet we all seem to buy into it.
It's unneeded pressure, goals, your goal should be to be kind and to be happy, and with that you can focus on your job as well. but all you got to be is focused.
Wow Tim, that is fantastic, I like you even more now 🥰
Of course always be kind. Always good to talk and listen to others views.
Dalai Lama says, "Being kind is sometimes hard. Be kind, anyway." If we succeed at that only half the time then our spirit is lifted half the time.
