How To: BOSE QC15 Ear Cup Replacement

  • Two and a half years of daily use have worn out the ear cups on my beloved BOSE QuietComfort 15 noise canceling headphones. Fortunately, BOSE offers several replacement parts for these fabulous headphones. This video is NOT a performance review of the headphones, this is a repair video. BOSE makes the task fairly straightforward and with a little caution and patience, you should be able to repair your own when needed.
    Additionally, I am debuting my new background music track, written expressly for my channel by myself (surprise!) and performed by the artist JB, exclusively licensed for my channel. Please visit his channel and support his music!

    Thanks for the help, this was a good visualization. For anyone watching this having trouble with the pads, don't be afraid to get your fingers in there to snap the lining under the tabs on the cup.

    Thanks for the video.
    Just ordered replacement earpads.
    I'm not an audiophile either, but I do love the QC15. They are just so comfortable, and you can have them on for hours and they're not bothering me one bit.

    Thanks for this! For anyone else wondering, I bought some cheap ($5 AUD) replacement ear cups from China and they installed fine. I've only just installed them so not sure how well they will last. Hard to pass up when the official Bose ones are ~$50 AUD.

    Well done. Extremely helpful video.
    It's unfortunate that Bose uses such cheap materials and does not offer replacement headbands. (FYI: you can remove all that peeling vinyl with some basic shipping tape! Use it like a lint-roller.)
    It's also a shame (and a TOTAL brand turn-off) that they charge so much for the original replacement earcups. I love my QC15's, but I'm not going to pay $35 plus $5 shipping every couple of years for new cups. That money will go to a new pair of headphones, most likely Sennheisers. Bose has only itself to thank for that!
    Once again, thanks for a super, clear, well-made-and very COMPLETE- tutorial!

      Thanks P Sammith, for the kind words! I'm wondering if Bose changed their materials in their newer models. I've had the QC35s for...I dunno...over a year and a half and the cups and the head band are still like new. My son took over my 15s and he's reporting that last set of after markets I installed on them, also about two years ago, are still perfect! Strange but true. Cheers!

    I enjoyed the rambling and the how-to portion both. I've had my Quiet Comfort 15s for a long time and it was helpful and interesting to hear a fellow owner's experience. I also appreciated your layman's description, using words and phrases that a non-guru might use, as contrasted to technical jargon that doesn't resonate with the typical user.
    I also need to purchase a replacement cord. My cord still works, but I think one of our cats took a nibble or two on the cord, and I don't want the cord to fail while I'm on the road.
    I went to the Bose website where they indicated I could only purchase this replacement cord at a Bose store, the only one of which is apparently in NY. That can't be the case because I have purchased Bose products in other states, but whatever. It's another example of a manufacturer neglecting things that are important to their customers.
    If anyone can provide information on where I might purchase a genuine Bose replacement cord, I would appreciate it very much. I can purchase replacement cords on e-bay and maybe Amazon, but they do not appear to be official Bose replacement cords. I'll also check the notes on this video. Thanks a lot for the video.

    Great video, SD21, thanks! Being unhappy with both the outrageous $35 that Bose wants for ear cup replacements and the many poor reviews of the cheapo substitutes, I decided to repair the darn thing myself -- but first needed to remove it, for which this video was perfect. I then trimmed-off the square edges of the foam to reduce the push-back against the material, and then used fabric-glue and sutures to re-connect the 2 loose edges. Worked like a charm!

  • @taves

    This is great information to have! Thank you for sharing.
    I'd like to share that there is a simple solution to the seam splitting! All you need: 1 sewing needle, and some thin, black thread. You can very easily stitch it back together - the material underneath the vinyl covering is quite durable, and holds the thread well.
    My problem now is, that superficial black vinyl is peeling off, so every time I use them, I'm left with little black bits on the side of my face and in my ear. Interestingly enough, however, if you gently rub that black covering away, it reveals an equally soft, durable black cloth underneath that works just as good as the black vinyl.
    Anyway, the $30 is very easily a solution to the hassle of having to fix it yourself, but I thought I'd share to any looking to save some coin.

    I really don't know how you managed it that easily. My replacement cushion won't click in on some of the lugs.
    Edit: managed it. Eventually. I had to stick my fingernails right down inside the crack and DRAG the locking ring inwards towards the centre of the ring in order to get it to go under the damn lugs. Didn't help that the ring is soft enough to get damaged around where it needs to lock on a lug...

    Too bad this video and repair parts were not available several years back. I went through 3 sets of these before giving up on them. 2 were replaced by Bose, the third was out of warranty. I love these headphones. The sound quality is excellent and the noise cancellation is great. Too bad the plastic is very brittle.

  • @lairdbridgman5279

    @ActionHank75, I've had that problem with mine when the cable is not fully connected to the headset. Pull it all the way out, then re-seat it, making sure the connection is solid. Next, I'd try the other cable. Assuming that fails, the problem lies somewhere in the wire that connects the right side ear cup to the left. At that point I'd contact Bose and see if it is covered under warranty. Sometimes with that kind of problem they'll fix it for you even if it isn't. Good luck!

    Rick, I got mine from BOSE. That way there is no doubt they are OEM products. Go to the BOSE home page and in the upper right corner there is a search box. Type in "QC 15 replacement ear cups" and you'll find your results. As of today they are now $35.00 retail. You can get replacements from overseas for $20.00 on eBay. I have never tested the after market versions so can't say anything about them. Good luck! Let us know if you learn anything helpful!

    My personal thoughts on these Bose, high dollar headphones that , performance wise are fine, are that they should hold up better than to have to replace the earcups after a few years of use. Especially in my case where I literally use the headphones only about two, maybe three times per year, when I fly somewhere. So, this last pair, which was a replacement for my first pair purchased in 2010, I got direct from Bose in 2014. I noticed today that the same thing is happening in that the material, which looks to be leather-like, is deteriorating and flaking off.

    Well, starting with 9 days in the hospital, through 2 months of radiation treatment and almost a solid year of slow recovery afterwards I wore them most nights all night long as well as long stretches during the worst days of recovery. You could say they were rode hard and put away wet! I figure I crammed at least 5 years of "normal" use into those 2.5 years.

    • @SkiDoc21
      @SkiDoc21  10 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Frank ko The top cushion is not designed to be replaced. I have seen a replacement top cushion offered by an after-market company. You have to cut the OEM cushion off and theirs connects via a zipper. However, the cushion is not as wide nor as deep as the OEM, so I wasn't willing to take the chance with mine.

    • @SkiDoc21
      @SkiDoc21  9 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      an0numus1 I just checked the BOSE website and the site still lists stock available for the QC15 replacement cushions. Go to BOSE.com, then mouse over the "Support" link at the top of the page (just to the left of "Find A Store"), select "Product & Technical Support". A new window will pop up, select the "I know My Product Name" link, scroll down to "Headphones and Headsets" and select "QuietComfort 15 headphones". That will open a new page where you select the "Parts and Accessories" Tab. The ear cushion replacement kit is at the top of the list and retails for $35.00 (as of today, 1/21/15). Click Add To Cart and checkout! Also, you will find a number of sellers on eBay selling import (non-OEM) parts. They are usually at least $10.00 cheaper and, in my experience, adequate replacement parts. They are not of the same quality as the BOSE parts, but they are an option. Hope this helps. Cheers and Happy Listening!

    • @psychology4everyday258

      Maggie Bear, yes the headband can be replaced. I elected not to do so, primarily because the replacement part has a zipper. It's a big and ugly one at that, IMO. Also, the wiring for the right ear cup passes through the headband and I didn't want to take any chances with it. There are YT vids on how to do it, check one out and see if you want to tackle the job. Thanks for watching and for commenting. Cheers!

      Medic_F93 nope, never had that problem. I suspect a connection problem with the cord or a logic board problem. Replacing cords are cheap, so that may be a good place to start. If it's still under warranty, BOSE will fix whatever it is.

      @SkiDoc21  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Medic_F93 Sorry to hear they gave up the ghost. Sounds like those were signs of the impending demise of the headsets. But six years is a good long run in my experience. Good time for an upgrade. How do you like the 35s?

    • @HonestlyLyingTruth
      @HonestlyLyingTruth 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      SkiDoc21 i would say its an excellent upgrade coming from the qc15. Everything i wanted is not in the qc35. They are plastic and light weight but they feel like high grade plastic, good to the touch. From time to time on cold days like these they almost feel like metal. You can use bluetooth (my main way) or if the battery dies (which i never experienced because i do not use them that often) you can use the cord. I wished the qc15 could do that but sadly no. Also they look way more better on the head than the qc15. The qc15 have a weird shape that looks a bit silly to me. Sound quality is very good, from time to time i hear something that i think is in the room but its just something new in a song that i never heard before,

  • @SkiDoc21
    @SkiDoc21  11 ปีที่แล้ว

    @OldSerpentOfSin, you are most welcome. FYI, or for anybody for that matter, you can find replacement parts on eBay for about half the cost of the OEMs. I imagine some true Bose loyalists would ride me out of town on a rail for even acknowledging the possibility. • @SkiDoc21
    @SkiDoc21  11 ปีที่แล้ว

    @Rick Lee, nope I never exercise in them. Personally I think they're too heavy and believe I would eventually loose them off my head. I have a pair of earbuds I use when exercising. However, I've used them enough for extended periods that I'm sure some light perspiration from lack of airflow combined with warm/hot weather has accelerated the degrading process. The replacement cups are still in great shape, at this point 10 months later. No signs of degrading yet! Thanks for watching! Cheers!

      I ... think I registered it? In fact I highly suspect I registered it just before making the claim.
      Both cups wore out, but one so badly that the foam popped out. They sent me a replacement for both. I think you might as well just tell them "my ear cups are worn out" rather than being too specific. I doubt they'll ask for proof.
