  • We have gotten some requests for more tonfa material, so this week we are taking a look at using the handle of the tonfa for striking and hooking
Waza Wednesday--the day Sensei Richard Poage shares a karate or kobudo technique with the world. Sensei Poage is a Shorin-Ryu Shorinkan practitioner under Sensei Eddie Bethea, and specializes in kata bunkai (analysis). He teaches at Peaceful Warrior Martial Arts & Healing Center in Scottsdale, AZ, and is available to book for seminars.
Peaceful Warrior was founded in 2010 by Renshi Richard M. Poage and Sensei Tiffany Richards, with a mission to create a community where health, wellness and martial arts training are used to better the lives of its members. It is our wish that through the training of the martial arts and other holistic health practices, our students are motivated to live healthier lives physically, mentally and spiritually.

We have a member of the dojo who speaks Spanish fluently, but his written Spanish is not as good, so we may not be able to have the best subtitles. Hopefully you are able to get the idea from the video, anyway!

It doesn't translate all that well, but it is something we can consider going forward

There is no "real world" application for the tonfa other than tradition and showing off, the same can be said of most all the other kobudo weapons as well.... this is because no one carries them in "real world" situations....oh really ? you're gonna rob me? well let me whip out my two foot long baton. (it simply doesn't happen).... it would be prudent to do a video on easily concealed weapons such as kobutons, keys and pocket knives... thank you for your videos.

Some security guards, jailers, prison guards, and foot patrol officers still carry tonfa (pr-24) as their perferred baton style. Most Kobudo weapons are from Okinawan and Southeast Asian police and gendarmes sidearms.
