I watched EMPRESSES IN THE PALCE (prequel) which I really liked. Then found this and blew me away! I'm an avid reader but now I'm consuming c, k dramas like crazy. I'm learning not to compare other c drams to RITP but its a struggle. There are really great shows out there but this will always hold a special place in my heart.
Well that definitely doesn't make me want to cry :(

@@ArachnaeNonafel it’s awesome that you’re trying to learn Chinese. I’m a native speaker and even I think it’s hard so I wouldn’t beat yourself up about it. Especially since this dramas dialogue is quite accurately written to be modeled after old style spoken Chinese which is vastly different from modern spoken mandarin and much more poetic, at times abstract. Let her get locked away for murder, accused her of cheating, hurt her friends and maid, hit her on multiple occasions, threatened to depose her, all this and still claimed to "love" her. He told her he couldn't do things for her despite this true love, but did it for others over lust and conquest. Then he finally goes to see her after first waiting for her to make the first step and THEN essentially said "well dang, it's just water under the bridge, come with me on vacation" WHAT-

After all the suffering Ruyi went through she was done. She had endured for years. Been the best Empress she could, caring and nurturing but was harmed and blamed for everything. When she cut her hair that was her ending them. Ending and mourning of their past selves and their marriage. When the truth was revealed and Ruyi was proven innocent she was at peace but wanted nothing more to do with the emperor. The emperor realized what a fool he'd been. But never said so. Blinded by his lust, selfishness, and jealousy. It was simply too late. When he tried to reconcile, Ruyi told him with that script they were over and then wished him well since she knew she was dying.
Sadly, so many of the consorts lost a friend because of the emperor's actions. Ruyi no longer had the strength mentally or physically to be a part of the harem.
Where she is going it doesn't need money o title.

he always told her that, every time she had to suffer for his sake he just told her to "forget the past" as if they argued over what sort of tea to drink after lunch. the closest he has ever come to an apology was when he talked te her in the cold palace while she was still unconscious after taking arsenic. he could only bear admitting he was wrong and hurt someone to an unconscious body.

There were a lot of questionable hints beforehand but I think Yanwan stepping up her ploys was the catalyst. The thing is that Ruyi isn't afraid to call him out either which undoubtedly pisses him off to no end as well.
This is always the Emporer's way: the past is over, let's move on. Never an apology, never an admission of wrong doing.

The ONLY time he truly gave her justice was the investigation into the deaths of Mei Ping and Yi Ping's babies. After that she was framed and slandered and he was like "oh, my bad, let's just let bygones be bygones." I'm glad she didn't forgive him.

She was tortured and her leg was permanently damaged, and she took is all because of her loyalty to Ruyi. She didn't break. Both were loyal, but Suoxin was able to live out Ruyi's dream of living an ordinary life with a husband and family.

@@DDiamond8374 Ruyi committed suicide. Hailan and Rong (if I remember correctly) found someone else that looked exactly like Ruyi and got her in the harem. That made Ling go crazy because she's so scared she's seeing ghost. That Ruyi lookalike is given Ruyi's old palace by the Emperor

It took 10 years for everyone like consort yu, consort ying, and consort rong to find evidence to prove ruyi innocent. But regardless i would rather watch the show but the book sounds good too. Ruyi was graceful, dignified, soft-spoken, polite, thoughtful and classy right to the end; the Emperor was a class-A jerk right to the end. He is so despicable and loathsome I sometimes wonder how playing this hateful character affected the actor in real life.
From what I heard, playing his more peckish moments did make his actor cry in regret in between takes.
This episode make me cry every time I see😢, even the music make me more sad 😢
