  • Last week, we reported that Honda would be discontinuing three models from their lineup leaving their showrooms with just two products - the Amaze and the City. That sparked a lot of questions from all of you, asking if it was a sign of the manufacturer slowly withdrawing from our market or was it really to make space for their new SUV, as they claim.
    To understand, we discuss what makes Honda what it is, take a trip down the memory lane about their illustrious past and what their future is going to be.

    My relationship with Honda starts with Activa, loved the scooter so much for its reliability and comfort.. the best thing is...in lockdown when everyone was stuck I rode this 10year scooter for Kozhikode to Pathanamthitta... Next one was Honda amaze... As you said previously what I need was a mini city and i got exactly what I want... Finally I took Honda hness... Everything I owned was a Honda... The factor which drives towards to Honda was it's comfort, refinement and reliability.... And it's so heart breaking to see a such a great company ending up like this... Wishing to see some good time for the brand in the future...

      @@MG-fi9ir My friend was having one... Its a nice scooter... Loaded with features... I have also recommended it for Some of my friends... But now... Mine is still running.. but my friend gave up on his vego... Also I don't know why I dont see that many vego on the road also... Infact I can't even recollect the last time spotting a vego... But I could see even gen1 Activa running... Well that says it all... You can call it blind faith.. go on... I have my own reasons

      I have my Wego with 1.25km odo running.
      You won't see much TVS Wego on roads because more people had a blind faith towards activa because of the fact that Activa was the first among the 4 stroke scooters in India and hence it was more recognition with the masses. TVS discontinued Wego when they launched 2nd gen Jupiter in the market. Jupiter is a far better product in riding comfort and all other aspects than the current Activas. Activa still sells more just because of its brand name"Activa". Hypothetically, If Jupiter was called/branded as an Activa it would be selling 5 times more than the real Activas. People are buying Activa just because of its brand name Activa. Both jupiter and even the discontinued wego is better in handling, usable torque, braking, best in absorbing pot holes, better pillion comfort and every aspect better than an Activa. I have a Wego and an Activa in my family. The discontinued Wego is better rider than even the current gen Activa.
      The new gen TVS Jupiter is another level.

      @@niriap9780 so.. coming to my Jupiter story... My cousin bought one... Because it was a better value for money scooter.. best in class... I also supported... Took the delivery went home... But noticed some wierd noise while deceleration So we thought may it's because it's new vehicle... First service done.. still the same... later figured out it was a faulty clutch... Service people said it was normal... But we were pretty sure.. at last got it replaced... So the thing is... In production There should be some quality tests at different levels... This issue got unnoticed in all these tests... What if this fault was identified after the warranty period... May be it is a great scooter but I for me naaaah....

    I own a 2006 model Honda city ZX(dolphin facelift) which is a golden car. But the colour is actually called New warm silver. Now he is 16 years old but still it is what it was in 2006. The feel remains the same. What an engineering masterpiece !!!!!!!. The real HONDA. Each and every region is perfectly crafted. Right now the odo is clocked around 135000 km. All the services were done at the Peninsular Honda Cochin. Even there is no change in the feel of riding at 40 km/hr. Butter smooth ride. Sleek gear shifts. Light clutch. Silent and calm engine. At the earlier times i would check on the tachometer at the traffic signals to check whether the engine is on/off. Because there were no engine noises or vibrations or rattling sounds inside the cabin. The only sound we would hear was the rotating sound of the tyre. The car was very much reliable too. Till now I haven't faced any mechanical/electrical issues or replacements from the car. Really a hassle-free one. At that time Honda made things which would last so many years. And of course the ethics and the craftsmanship of Japanese engineering too. So many parts were Made in Japan. Even the lids of the brake,clutch reservoirs had Japanese writings on them. Every one says that the Toyota is the king of reliability, I agree but the honda is also the same. I'm saying because I really experienced that.
    The rear seats were so spacious. I think the modern sedans doesn't have that much space in the rear area. I know there are so many haters for the dolphin model but the facelift was so beautiful compared to the dolphin. It had the I-DSI technology. At that time people neglected it because it didn't had the legendary V-TEC in it. But right now because of the hike in the fuel prices the I-DSI is becoming into action I think. Really sad to see the condition of Honda right now. Honda was launched in India in 1998 and till 2014 they produced cars with petrol engines only. At the same time other manufacturers made cars with diesel engines too. So Honda competed with the other companies with their single petrol engines. So we can easily guess the quality and range of the REAL HONDA NA PETROL ENGINES..... And also the people's faith in them...!!!!!! Whatever happens I am and will be a Honda fan boy till I die. Because the Honda brand really got carved inside my heart and my mind. So all i wanna say is that HONDA IS HONDA!!!!!!!!......... ------- By a die hard Honda fan boy ......

    I would like to add that in the immediate future dealers will be forced to display cars of multiple brands under the same roof like in abroad. Then only the business will be financially viable. Like european nations United together to form european union ..car companies should think about establishing dealers with multiple brands . So that they can be a part of much larger economy

    Heard that Honda Jazz will be stopped by year end. It is the best premium hatchback available in India.
    Butter-smooth engine, unmatched reliability, longevity of the classic ivtec engine and so much space inside the car. These positives should be highlighted while marketing the great vehicle.
    It is an international model and is sold in many countries. A legendary car with a long legacy.
    It is sad for prospective customers if the car is going to be withdrawn from Indian market...
    They should update the car and market it well instead of pulling it out of the market.

Apart from squeaks and rattles in the later versions, they have all been absolutely trouble free and have never let us down.

    The worst thing I hate about honda in India is that they never share their future strategies. They don't disclose what products will come at what segments . They should learn from VW group they shared their 8000 crore investment and new product line , new platform introduction , showcase of a concept , next year you get a final production model . This also helped in regaining market share and customer trust . You could not have expected this from a VW 10 years ago. Honda always keeps everything a secret which is the first step of losing trust of a potential customer. As you said every brand should have a vision of what they will introduce in future

    Explains well where Honda as a carmaker in India is now, and more importantly, why. In 2020 we were planning to get the new Civic as our daily runner, after seeing the vehicle on the road. However, when we inspected the vehicle at their showroom in Thrissur, we were dissuaded by the compromises they have made (IMO) in the build. The engine specs were also not that impressive. Besides, they didn’t offer a diesel automatic, which was an absolute requirement for my wife who prefer automatic transmissions (at one point she used to drive a manual 4x4, but not now due to health issues). We later settled for a Volvo S60, a decision that we think was right, given what a beast that machine is. Thank you for the post.

    A much relevant discussion on the current scenario of Honda. I think Honda still holds a place in the minds of buyers (including enthusiasts) and it would not be much difficult for them to re establish in the market. As JayD said, bringing some cars under the 2500 import rule might bring back some glory to the Japanese brand. The dealers will also be happy if Honda does it.

    • @mukunthansrithar7699
      @mukunthansrithar7699 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@kill3rbyysight brother, let me make my point clear. For an international car maker like Honda which had premium appeal and fantabulous quality as the USP of their cars is now pathetically left with just two cars in their portfolio for one of the world’s largest car market which puts a big question mark about their future in the Indian market. And about the 5th gen city, as u said it is indeed a gem in its own way. But it has its own shortcomings too. The 1.5 NA ivtec is one hell of a engine. In spite it being rev happy, nobody redlines it at 7200rpm all the time. Usable power makes more sense than outright power. And we don’t get the 1.0 turbo petrol here which is a miss too. The 1.5 idtec even though being frugal it is lacklustre when it comes to performance and has refinement issues. The city if it’s traced back to its roots, the first gen Og city, the 5th gen city never comes near it when it is looked from an enthusiastic perspective considering the time both the cars were launched. The city has evolved itself into a perfect family car with each generation from being the default enthusiast’s favourite.

    • @kill3rbyysight
      @kill3rbyysight 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      da thing is.... is og city exterior, space, interior, comfort and ride quality matches the 5th gen city?? not even close.. so u do hv to keep up with da time even though if u hv to cut it down from somewhere else as perfect car doesn't exist... talking from enthusiast point of view.. I hv driven other sedans but da feel 5th gen city gives is amazing.. handling, engine, gear shifts, clutch, chasis even in Autocar track day.. it did beat all cars under 30 lac range.. & was damn close to bmw.. car journalists r pouring praises for its qualities.. sometimes we just over demand as human nature is.. even heard ppl sayin they that 5th gen gives a sorts car feel.. Honda condition is due to interest shift to SUVs .. ppl r goin for plastic bodies cus they want some fancy features and big presence on road in order to satisfy their fake ego... very less percentage of ppl care for driving dynamics most of them dnt even know wat it means.... so it doesn't mean if something is underperforming.. it's bad... there r many examples in movies, singers etc. Popularity is not equal to quality..

    • @mukunthansrithar7699
      @mukunthansrithar7699 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      U mean the 5th gen city is close to bmw in driving dynamics and has the feel of a sports car!! Then what will u say about the new German twins that have set benchmarks to handling in that segment. And u say the city isn't a perfect car. What I say is it is perfect in a different way by being a family car and not the enthusiast way. Get it. And the mention about the first gen city was not a direct comparison. It was just to stress upon the fact that how the city has evolved over the time with the character changed totally and I did mention about the time both these cars were launched. With that into consideration the 1st gen city was ahead of it's time. The Indian market has shifted towards suv's as u said. As a car manufacturer isn't it Honda's responsibility to have one on their own stable when it has become the most lucrative segment of the Indian car market. That too comes under keeping up with time as u said. It is about Honda as an international brand as such and how they've failed to give us what we deserve and not about city alone.

    I have worked with Honda and was a fan of them. Some of the mistakes they made are summarised below.
    1) When new car firms came to India, many of their hard-core expert professionals left the firm, who were once part of the firm and brought them to glory. That happened after 2015! 2) Do not understand, why they are hesitating to bring their world-class models to India. They could have brought in Vezzel, HRV etc.
    3) Blindly following a leading brand in India, Honda compromised much on quality. That gave them some edge at a time, but when quality was dropped without compromising on the price, slowly the old Honda fan base eroded to German car makers!
    4) Being a better brand, without bringing in world-class products, they tried to fool the people with their routine outdated models which were still overpriced when compared to the new latest models on the market.
    5) No consistency. Honda Civic and CRV were launched and withdrawn in no time, taking away some of their old customers (Mobilio & BRV left earlier). I had a 2008 Civic and a 2013 Brio and was willing to go with Honda further.
    But no models came after that which was a fit for me! These are some of my observations. Thank you.

      @Aswin Biju ....then what about Nissan mistubishi and Renault...they r also on alliance...just making a car ie magnite and kiger...city and amaze r being sold still in good numbers....and Volkswagen group still don't have much sales u can check their sales...slavia and virtues together is not able outsell city in the segment and what honda is lacking is their csuv and hopefully they launch it within a yr

    Honda was the safest car in its segment if you look the Honda city from 2008 from its base model 2 airbags and abs and ebd were standard but in those times in volkswagen vento and polo only the top trims got these safety features. And Honda city is the first car in the segment to standadise these safety features and the 2008 Honda city got 4 stars in Asian ncap and new 5 gen city got 5 star, Jazz with 6 airbags got 5 star in euro ncap and just look how safe the Honda cars are as comparing maruti, kia cars, the new kia seltos which is above 20 laks for the top model has only got 3 stars. Why everyone want these Kia cars . In Europe and other countries these KIA cars were thought as cheap ugly cars

      Kia has highly improved their built quality and is currently having 4 stars... Honda is planning for a comeback with sub compact SUV dedicating half of its production capacity for the same in India

    Last year we bought new amaze .it was great buy with petrol CVT full option.Other than power everything was great deal .so clever in engineering even in city rising.but something was newly launched i don't hesitate to buy it without even thinking much that's a trust 😇🤘🏻.

    Back in 2015 I bought a brand new Tata BOLT XT petrol (full option) when, as you said, only risk-taking customers with some knowledge of cars would prefer a Tata, knowing the value of bridge products like Zest and Bolt. What attracted me was it's sturdy drive, comfort, space and the beautiful and attractive interiors with a load of features for just 7 lakhs. 2 months after purchase, I went for a marriage where a brand new Honda City was given as the dowry car to the couples. When I took a walk around the city, I felt the interiors too dull as the AC vents were too basic (chintu-mintu in Faisal Khan's language 😬) and for me atleast, it was less attractive, as my BOLT has good looking AC vents finished in a glossy black panel with chrome linings around it, which is beautifully blended with the 4.5 inch touchscreen with physical buttons and usable steering controls as well. That time, a City cost around 12 lakhs, which was quite surprising to me as well. And I disliked that model immediately because I was too much in love with my cousin's arrowshot City, and the replacement facelift didn't appeal to me as well.
    Later I drove my cousin-in-law's Amaze Diesel 2015 where I found the steering controls were not at all usable and the back seat space was terrible. As you said, I too eventually got Honda's image as a budget manufacturer who put cheap quality interiors in their cars. So sad to see their plight.

      Who's the one posting shitty comments here.

      @@sachinsadanandan they can express but dont like above. He experienced all by looking a car parked near to him. With out driving it or without entering it.
      For tata owners they only need interior colours and dark edition. Dont need better a engine.
      You can only compare on cosmatics on budget cars from honda but cant compare with engine and tech and quality of honda.
      Its not the place for crying tata owners. By comparing a hatch with sedan.

      A) You are the person crying here.
      B) Please read the original author's comment again, he is a big fan of the arrowshot city. And also, he has driven the Amaze. So he has the right to comment on his experience.
      C) As per your logic, he shouldn't compare a hatch with a sedan because Bolt (hatchback) has more space at the back row than Amaze (sedan)?
      Anyway am out of this useless debate, this is Talking Cars community and I hope you will respect other's opinion and take it in the right spirit instead of stamping anyone as a particular brand loyalist.
      Peace out ✌️
