1/25 scale Kenworth W900 hood hinge modifications

- A good example of how one change brings about another: Replacing molded grille "mesh" on an AMT Kenworth W900 grille with etched mesh greatly improved the grille's appearance but meant that kit's hood hinges could no longer be used in their stock configuration since the section of grille they glue to was now cut away.
Hinge parts were reworked and attached to frame instead of grille (Note that this model, still a work in progress, uses Revell frame for longer wheelbase with AMT cab and engine to represent an early 1970's W925) and 3/64" brass wire was formed to make the hinge pins.
3/32" styrene tube, drilled out for the 3/64" brass wire, is glued to the inside of hood and slips onto the wire hinge pins. This has the added benefit of making it easy to remove hood, instead of it being permanently glued in place when the stock kit hinge installation is used.

I've been doing this on scale models for several years when possible, on cars, trucks, and even military vehicles. I use Plano products, photoetched screens from HO-scale aftermarket pieces, and even materials I find at hobby stores. It's a fairly easy modification that brings a great deal of realism to models.👍

Thank you, one change brought about another and in the end it worked out quite well. Have been looking at Transtar 4300 reference photos (for sale ads online are a handy source) and hood portion of hinge on ones I have see appears similar to the 3/32" tube. just not as long as section used on this KW model.

Your see thru mesh grill is unbelievably realistic. It is something I really need to try out. The photo showing the two models next to each other, speaks volumes as to the realism.

Thank you - I like the appearance of etched parts for a number of items, grille mesh and exhaust heat shields especially, but on the other hand find that in some applications photoetched parts can look either too "flat" or out of proportion due to their thin cross section. At 3:00 if you look closely you can see .010 black styrene sheet added to back of etched stainless Kenworth emblems (made by Model Car Garage) to give them a bit of thickness.

Love the detail work but a quick question might you be able to make a video on how you add electrical wiring and air lines to your model. It is a detail that I feel really add realism to the kits, I have air line diagrams but am still struggling with adding them, as well with electrical/hydraulic lines. Your work in these areas is superior to anything on TH-cam and if you are able I believe it would be greatly appreciated by myself and other detail oriented modelers. Thank again for all the video tips.

For the headlight/marker light wires visible around 2:35 I “cheated” and ran wires between the light assemblies on either side but did not connect them to the frame. This is a compromise made (after a false start where I did include that portion of the wiring harness) to accommodate tight clearances in this area as well as the wires being proportionally stiffer than wiring harness on a real truck.
In some situations a bit of visual sleight of hand can be more effective and practical than trying to replicate every component.

I looked at different "in progress" truck model photos and there weren't very many that showed air brake hoses, fittings etc. on their own, majority of photos were taken at various stages of completion and a lot of the brake specific items were partially hidden from view. So I put together an initial video (uploaded this morning) featuring air brake lines etc. on a van trailer as that project was at the stage of needing these details. Will follow up with a truck project as it gets underway, with air brake details and other items like extending suspension walking beams (Hendrickson) to 72" "Ontario spec" drive axle spread.

The 6 speed Mack’s would sure lug, down to about 40 mph in 6th gear. Only “problem” was, once you dropped down to 5th there was no getting that 6th gear back until you topped the grade and levelled out…4-ways time!

That's how I make my hinges for resin T800 hoods except I just used a piece of tubing on the frame side. Nice thing is the hood is adjustable so it always sits proper if you have a strip on it to the cab.
Very good point regarding adjustability, as adjustment is built into hood/cowl fit on 1:1 trucks (parts don't always fit perfectly on them either!)

@@crushingvanessa3277 Ah, yes - the ongoing challenge of explaining the Class 8 truck world, especially when a blanket class of "heavy commercial" is used for truck entries of all types. To be fair, I would be lost trying to judge car entries and there is a practical limit to the number of classes possible.
@@brsnorthernhorsejourney3579 I've helped just a couple contests, actually hate it but it's useful to learn and critique your own models. I had to judge armour, something I know nothing about, aircraft I'm ok with and steel ships, kinda. I usually have to explain rigs to them. I don't even work around them, just know them well enough.

One other benefit I found was that a section of the 3/64" brass wire bent to suit made a great "no contact" holder making use of the 3/32" styrene tube sections on hood to hold it for priming and painting.
