      He was the most capable of Dracula's Generals, instead of sitting around lording over a spit of land and the livestock that lived there, he had spent most of those 300 years constantly fighting. And nobody acknowledges that until it's to late and the damage is already done.

    For someone who was considered stupid by his peers, he picked up a lot of things: Dacula going in a suicide revenge, and how Alucard would be agaist killing all humans for having a human mother (even thought he probably didn't met or spent time with Alucard to know him well)
    And if there was one thing he understood well was war and combat (art of war)

    What's interesting about Godbrand is that, despite being the comic relief among the generals, he was the first one to really figure out what was up with Dracula and what his *real* endgoal was.
    His first mistake was not cutting his losses and going home immediately after the fact.
    His second, and last, was trying to play Carmilla's game with *Isaac* of all people.

  • @TeamKhandiKhane
    @TeamKhandiKhane ปีที่แล้ว +30

    Godbrand is very much the only "Soldier" type person in that Court. Dracula is more of a force of nature and truly doesn't care if he dies or not, he's a lost broken man. The rest of the court are for all intents an functional purposes Nobility of some sort. A soldier gets nowhere among allies by getting in the way of progress, or allowing things to be wild and excessive. While Godbrand does have his wild moments they're moments, and he accurately predicted with very little real info the course that Dracula would take.
    However he shares one trait with most of the vampires in the entire show. Every single one of them with only a few standout exceptions, wouldn't be as bad off as they are if they had even one real friend that wasn't a yes man, terrified of them, or trying to kill them. Godbrand is that for Draculas court and it is IMO entirely based on his existence as a soldier first. He's not the idiot people take him for. Biased, certainly, but observant, cunning and in any functional way that matters, competent at what he does.

  • @13Bbeards

    Godbrand is a bit of an "Everyman" character. He says things that the audience is thinking and wondering, but aren't able to ask. He is also a great foil to the other vampires.
    Godbrand also appears to be chaotic, but that is because he loves to initially say things and react. However, he is a solid strategist. He makes a great back room advisor, rather than an in front general. But, he knows about troop rations (blood), and how to wage a war more effectively. He is also willing to call things as he sees them, versus the other vampires who see plans that don't exist.

  • @Metalwabbit

    I find it funny because in every rpg where I get to appoint people to positions of powers, I always end up with a Godbrande in my inner circle. It's just so nice to have a person so direct you know they wouldn't stab you in the back and like it was said in this video, they're usually smarter than most people expect. Plus when you need a guy to just stroll into an enemy camp and lay waste to everyone, you might as well pick the person who will enjoy it and will ask the questions of you no one else is brave/impulsive enough to ask

  • @dmen89
    @dmen89 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    I feel like Godbrand is quite literally from a different time with a different meritocratic system. He seems like a stock version of what the public considers a Viking era warrior. And that's what he is: a warrior.
    When we see his fantasy/dream we see him fight a battle like a skirmisher, ambushing the livestock left and right. He wasn't made to fight a war. He's not a strategic person. He is a tactician. He thinks mostly short term and approaches his scenes as such.
    After his outburst he approaches Hector with first the apology, later using the occasion to reflect on the situation with Hector. He lets himself be underestimated by Hector.
    He tries to put off Carmilla as he is as of yet unequipped to deal with her (Carmilla being very much a planner and he knows that she would have the upper hand). This works until she sends him down the stairs with a flying kick.
    He approaches Dracula with respect and proper etiquette (thus showing he *can* behave, he just most of the time doesn't want to). The fact that he picks up on little details in Dracula's plan shows he isn't stupid. He's just not used to planning ahead of time, but rather adapting to a situation.
    Godbrand doesn't play chess, he plays backgammon. Which makes him a specific kind of dangerous, if the whole castle wasn't filled to the brim with chess masters.

  • @chrishood7720

    Godbrand was a child but the thing is that children are far more perceptive and intelligent than most adults give credit. Yeah he was reactive and bloodthirsty but he still understood that war needs to be planned and calculated. He was the first to really recognize Dracula’s decent before anyone else and was right about pointing out the importance of Alucard in the war but everyone dismissed him (like a child). And every point he made was straight forward and clear but was often told so bluntly that most took them as insults (again, much like what children do). So yeah, Godbrand was a Man-Child but also one the most perceptive and clear headed character in the series

    I personally loved that they didn't go the rout of portraying Godbrand as a stereotypical mindless brute, but as a mostly rational individual with autonomy. As a Norse Viking, Godbrand is not dumb. He understands the complexities of battle, negotiating, logistics, and when to retreat instead of fight; especially since he has centuries of experience. While he is brutal and blunt, he's not a mindless yes-man that follows orders without hesitation; he questions things and knows to look at the bigger picture. In many ways, Godbrand was the most sane individual in Dracula's court because he knew that there was no order or logic to Dracula's plan, just the mutual destruction of humans and vampires.
    Also, I have to say, I am loving your cosplay. Its simple yet impactful.

  • @dustind4694

    My assumption is that Godbrand kind of got by on bravado in life, and probably got hit in the head on occasion, being, y'know, a raider, so you wind up with someone who's not super great at keeping his inner monologue inner and only rarely understands why this is wise. Throw in the complexity of being in the mid-point of a hierarchy (initially, he tanks it quick) when he's used to being big bad boy on the boat, and, well...

    It was always something interesting when I encounter people that are impulsive like Godbrand. My own first reaction to either not take them seriously or wonder if they are going to be a problem in my life down the line due to their unfiltered manner of speaking and directness; especially if they are not being reprimanded by either their peers or the audience around them.
    Then I got into thinking more, and this video of yours actually helped with solidifying what I was doing as well. Using such people as a gauge of how everyone else acts around them when those Godbrands are talking really loud. Which oddly led to me having at least one Godbrand like friend in my life, and they know full well to show me respect; but at the same time, are unfiltered with their thoughts and emotions that I know where we both stand with each other. Ehhh an odd friend indeed.

    1) Characters that just have no filter tend to provide allot of entertainment. Weather it comedy, or them just having that lust for life.
    2) I find characters like Godbrand to be the most trustworthy. Yes they’ll say something offensive quite often, but there the type of people that you’ll know were they stand. If they have a problem with you they’ll say it to your face. And even if they do plan to betray you. I even felt relieved when Isaac killed him because it meant we wouldn't have to listen to his incessant yapping anymore. But I think I've got more sympathy for him now after watching this. I pride myself in my ability to know when NOT to say something, and I forget sometimes that that's a skill I had to learn over time. Godbrand could've gotten there as well, if he'd just been a little more aware of how people were perceiving him.

    • @Zeknif1
      @Zeknif1 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      I think he could have learned how to be more tactful had he spent more time around the likes of Dracula and Carmilla… Dracula who is so far above his league in strength and skill that Godbrand was unwilling to even challenge him, and Carmilla who could quickly put Godbrand into his place if he stepped too far out of line. Alas, he lived as a Viking, which gave him plenty of opportunity to live with little consequence to speaking his mind without filters because there were so few at his own level that could convince him of the need to keep some of his thoughts to himself or to manipulate others through wit and charm to achieve desired outcomes where intimidation through strength can be unnecessary, detrimental or even wholly inappropriate for the people he is dealing with.

    People indeed make great boats if you look at Norse mythology. I shall point to Naglfar, the boat made entirely from the toenails and fingernails of the dead. If the Giants can make boats out of the fingernails of the dead, then why not undead vampire Norsemen? A goal any Viking strives for, you know?
    EDIT: This also fits into the classic vampire lore about fingernails continuing to grow while they are in the grave. You have to assume the Nordic mind decided that vampires aren't real, but Giants can harvest those nails to protect the ship as they continue to grow long after death.

    Still, he raises valid points and ticks more than a few boxes; after all, Dracula had him around for a reason (...probably). He might fall into the 'Evil Overlord's List' idea that if you have a plan that a five year old can see the problems in, it's a bad plan.

Although Godbrand was full of himself, he was absolutely the only one in that court capable of pulling off Dracula's vision. The only problem was that Dracula stood in his own way and Godbrand knew that and weighed the mission over his loyalty to the individual and Issac took preemptive action. i'm a proud Godbrand Fan & i wish we had more time with him.
    Alas, he was too good for this world XD
    Not gunna lie, out of the entire council, while i identified with Hector's love of animals over people due to the fact that animals are far more trustworthy & easy to read, and with Carmila's response to trauma & being triggered, Godbrand was the one i felt the most connected to just on a normal day on the whole.
    My own personal headcannon is that he, like myself, happens to be autistic and was raised without any knowledge that his brain works different from others. The blunt honesty, the fact that he sucks at reading the room, the foot-in-mouth moments, and even the subpar but genuine apologies that seem like he's doubling back on his insults when really he was just trying to explain where his thought process came from that lead to his outburst. He, like myself as an adult, even caught himself mid-sentence during the apology scene when he realized he'd said something to upset Hector and he immediately course-corrected to try to soften the blow of what he meant to say. And the scene with him and Vlad talking alone just fucking HURTS because it reminds me of a younger me talking to my abusive father; he was respectful, didn't approach until given permission to speak, spoke openly of his concerns [and bowel troubles] without a second thought, and when Vlad reacted in such a strongly negative and aggressive way it took him by surprise and he buckled. War/Battle/Bloodshed and Boats are clearly his special interests cuz he even dreams about it and is clearly very knowledgeable on the subject.

    Godbrand sounds like he's always drunk enough to tell everyone his problems, I think he's an interesting case study into the mind of someone without any immediate risk prediction or evaluation skills, more than likely because his vampire side has made it so those skills are an incredibly useless skill-set outside of situations such as in the show.

    I'm just like godbrand in the sense of having no filter and having a massive ego. And to combat that side of my personality I will try to refrain from talking so much in the hopes that people will like me more and so I won't anger or offend anyone. But then people will complain about me being so quiet.

    You should try going out to dinner in that outfit, Georgia = ) I think there are people...okay...I actually know there are people (because I've met them) who DO have this part of their brain developed, but simply choose not to use it. They shut it down, turn it off...ignore it...because they have an "identity" without it. Instead of, say, being the cute one in the boy band, they are the reactionary one. Some use it to scare people, because unpredictability can be scary and it feeds their ego. Until their ego gets muted because they direct that mouth at the wrong person and wind up humbled. Which...for someone like them...is inevitable.

    keep in mind that notable Vikings were careful in who and where they attacked, and the raids were well planned to avoid armed intervention. Preparation to avoid needing order of battle and jut enjoy the moment. And Godbrand has been doing it for hundred of years as a medium fish in a small pond that leads back to the ocean. Where stepping off the boat could be fatal, where he does not always know what level of Clerical warriors or mages are housed behind the walls.

    There was this line that Hector said to Godbrand:
    "Godbrand, you've never met anything you didn't immediately kill, fuck, or make a boat out of."
    Well... he already met him and Isaac. Neither of them are dead, so he didn't immediately kill them. Neither of them are boats. What does that leave?

    I found the video randomly and wow, it is great ! I really liked godbrand when i watched castlevania, he is very direct, you know where you stand with him quickly, which i appreciate. Im a bit like him in the "direct" approach, not so much the ego ^^. It was refreshing to see a character that let everyone around him knows about his opinions on something it knows and is competent in. Great analysis, really enjoyable to watch !

    This was absolutely interesting. I thought Godbrand was comedic relief for the second season, but he's extremely cautious and picked up MANY details that would've not been picked up quickly. Well, just not in a mature way. I wonder if Sypha or Trevor are next for the analysis.😁

    I do think the apology was Carmella’s idea. She wanted a forge master, and godbrand was funneling info to her. As she said he probably wanted to “sleep” with her. I mean he didn’t try to kill her or make her a boat so it makes sense.

    7:02 I agree that Godbrand is that kind of person. But as someone with a similar personality type, I can say that this is only really enjoyable when that's WHAT has been decided. Especially in a "group activity", so to speak. When you've been pulled into some kind of project where there's a POINT, and it's decided that "yeah, let's go wild with this", THAT'S enjoyable and fun. When it's a bunch of people puttering around with no plans and no decision can be made without a lot of debating and stepping on people's toys, it's just frustrating. You can be out there, doing your own thing in the way YOU want, instead of just standing around or flailing around uselessly.

    When I first watched season two, I was actually very confused why we were not focusing mostly on the main trio, and I did not enjoy the parts with the vampires nearly as much. So when Godbrand showed up, I thought him very entertaining. But then I actually started watching him and realize that he was not just a stupid, impulsive character, they basically had a very strong intuition that was nearly perfectly spot on every time, but his one track mind ended up being his downfall.
    I actually enjoyed watching him, and I was actually slightly sad when he died. Definitely enjoy this video and enjoy the character the most out of all the other side vampires

    I believe he lets the eating and fucking thing go because that's what they all do. It's like saying you only sleep eat and make toy boats.
    I think Godbrand's questions about the war are more from him understanding how war works. One of the few things he probably understand intrinsically. That and boats. He's saying it because he knows someone needs to set the boat right. And he doesn't want to put in the mental work to do it. He wants them to work it all out so he can just focus on the fun part.
