What an excellent tutorial, so easy to follow. You have a great gift for explaining things in a clear, normal way with just the right amount of detail. Thanks!
Hi. Your video on setup was very helpful but do you have a tutorial on the general use of the G2070. ie: I put paper in the lower paper tray getting started then I see “load paper in back paper tray?! Thanks
The user guide should help you there. Generally speaking if the rear compartment is open with no paper, it might ask you to load paper. It could also be asking because you specified the incorrect paper feed tray in your print dialog.
Well explained. I have a G7020. Had to use a USB connection because after a few years of service. The printer will not rec. my WiFi. I was able to send a file and print it but Scanning is a different ball game. The Printer is telling me that the printer is not connected. Any suggestions are welcomed. Thanks.
Excellent video--thank you! I just dealt with this issue today. Two different representatives at Canon tech support (which used to be so good) told me that it could not be done. I did find an interesting work-around. Open the IJ Scan Utility (if you don't have it, Canon tech support will help you install it). Click on Settings, then on Document Scan. On the right, choose ADF (Simplex) for Source Type, and Legal for Original Size. Now scan your document as a .pdf. When you print it, it will automatically print it (reduced, of course) on 8.5 x 11 paper. Better than nothing! Now, if you want to, you can scan this, or copy it, or save it as a .jpg, or whatever. Good luck. :)
@@michaelerbreviews - Thanks for kind words, but I really did want to find out how to do it the "right" way, and for that, your video is excellent. I have owned many Canon printers, and although as you say, this one is excellent, navigating the menu is a nightmare, which was never the case on other printers. So thanks again!!!
I was hoping that this video would explain how to scan a legal document to a file. After watching this I would still like to know how to scan a legal document but ALSO if you could copy a legal doc onto legal size paper
You can scan a legal document to a file on your computer using the ADF. The rear paper feed can use paper sizes up to 8.50" x 26.61" so you can then print the scanned file to a legal size piece of paper or you can print the legal size document to a letter sized paper while choosing scale to fit in the print dialog.
@@michaelerbreviews Thanks! I was looking for a setting for "best" print for documents and eventually found it after I posted my question to you, thanks to you. My driver from Apple doesn't provide it in the print dialogue box.
Thank you so much for your fantastic lesson. It was so clear and precise. Is there any way to operate the g7020 from the computer instead of from the printer. it is so hard for me to see the panel on the printer.
Depends on what you want to do. There should have been a Canon IJ Scan Utility Lite app installed during the installation process. That allows you to operate the scanner from your computer. There is also a web based printer settings page that enables you to change settings and perform other maintenance chores.
A really excellent video: clear, well-paced, and not covered by anyone else on the internet. However, the instructions did not work for the G4210 I am using, which is perplexing because the settings are identical. With the paper properly loaded in the ADF and everything configured correctly, I am prompted to "place the document on the platen" (glass surface?). The machine will not pull the original onto the bed and scan it. Anyone else have this problem? Many thanks for any ideas.
Scanning Legal sized documents is supported on the ADF of the G4210. As far as resizing the document to have it print on a letter size piece of paper, I don’t have access to a 4210 so can’t speak to that. Check the documentation I guess.gdlp01.c-wss.com/gds/7/0300029527/01/G4010ser_OnlineManual_Mac_EN_V01.pdf
The process to scan legal documents and print them on letter sized paper is much easier if you use the Canon IJ scanning utility on your computer. Scan the legal document using the ADF and save the scan to your computer as a PDF. Then print the legal document using letter size paper and choosing scale to fit in the print dialog. I made a quick video demonstrating the photo quality of the Pixma G7020 here- th-cam.com/video/QvAcXOJleGE/w-d-xo.html
Thanks for the info , very good review , I just purchased this unit after my epson artisan 837 died . After installing this G7020 it drew paper from the cassette, after printing a photo it would only draw paper from the rear tray . Now I can see how to change it back. I wish that canon would give you a user guide which they don't, and they don't include a ground wire on the power supply cord, instead they give you a single strand wire to run to a ground that is just awful . I looked at the canon internet site and couldn't find how to get the bottom cassette to feed the printout, now I know, thanks!! This does print nice photos but the sight glass is somewhere from the stone ages. My 8 year old artisan had a very nice display with color lights , sd card reader and a fax line. All new photo printers don't have a fax line which is why I went with this model.
Platen usually doesn't have legal size for scanning, but I though as long as a printer has top feeder it can scan legal sized document, so looks like it's not the case? And can the ADF do duplexing scanning? Thanks!
Huh? This video is all about scanning legal paper using the top ADF. No it cannot do duplex scanning using the ADF. You have to manually do that be putting the printed copy back into the tray upside down and feeding the other side of the legal sized document back through the ADF.
@@michaelerbreviews Thanks, I see, but you must use that trick to first print out to reduce the size and then scan? It does not allow to directly scan legal size paper to file?
Passer-by I am not aware of any other way to do it. You need to reduce the size of the scan of legal paper to fit on letter paper. It does seem like it should be an option to do a simple task such as that, but there isn’t.
Thanks Micheal, great video. I have a question. I don’t have a laptop or computer only an iPad. My printer will not sync with my iPad. I was on the phone with HP and Comcast for two hours and they both said I need a main computer in the house in order for the iPad to wirelessly sync with it. Is this true? If so, what laptop should I get as I would only be using it to solve this problem? I use my iPad for everything. Thanks Micheal.
You do not need a router to use an iPad to print to the G7020. It is able to use AirPrint. You need to install the Canon Print app on your iPad, then connect the the hot spot that the printer creates by going into your iPad settings>WiFi and choose the Canon_ij_xxx network. Full details can be found on the Canon website. This should be true for any printer that supports AirPrint.
Thanks for the tutorial! I am done, done, done with trying to figure this piece of JUNK out . . . I do NOT like how complicated this printer is . . . my HP was less complicated . . . I know, I know the cartridges for a HP are WAAAY more expensive, but it sucks that I cannot get my Canon G7020 to print dolor. As far as I am concerned, it is a $300 PIECE of JUNK!!!!!! I am off to Staples to buy an HP, I will give this POS Canon to charity . . . (if they will take it!) If someone reading this, wants to pay the shipping (I live in San Diego), the printer is YOURS!!
I do not consider this printer complicated. I’m sure there’s a very simple reason that you cannot print in color. I’ll be glad to take the printer off your hands by only paying shipping.
Decent printer it is a shame that menu system is so out dated and the network configuration has so much trouble. I can print to the printer from my computer but I can't scan to my computer with IJ scan utility as it claims it can not connect. The manual and help are useless. I am trying to connect to Windows 10 computer and I suspect it has something to do with either Windows firewall or anti virus software blocking me somewhere but Canon help doesn't even attempt to address this for ease of use so I gave up. If it takes more than hour to figure out my time is to valuable. Came across your video searching for a solution. I found Windows Microsoft Store had a free app PDF Document Scanner and also Windows Scan both which work flawlessly. The IJ Scan Utility that Canon puts out just sucks and the menu system on the G7020 sucks but printers are cheap and ink is expensive and at least this printer helps that cost tremendously.
I agree that the display and menu system is deficient. I can't speak to your Windows woes as I'm on a Mac. In spite of the issues, this is a good performing printer and has an excellent and inexpensive ink system.

Thanks Michael. I was previously not able to print legal documents on my printer (for some reason) and I just followed your instructions and success!
Glad I could help!

Do you have to manually open the control panel and little paper tongue type thing in order to print? Or does the printer open it mechanically?
You manually flip the tray down.
Can you explain "Intensity" of print on the menu? Thanks for a great video.
It basically brightens or darkens the colors during printing
