Instead, they dove deep into the film archives and wove a story with them, as if they went back in time and shot the history of Tokyo. Really fantastic editing and production. So many sights of old Tokyo I've never seen before.
I have such admiration for the people of Tokyo. Every time disaster strikes, they build back stronger and better than before. The beautiful spirit of the Tokyoites is what helps this city to flourish.
It always fascinated me how Japan rose and fell, only to rise once again throughout history. As an Asian, Japan's story has always been an inspirational one. To be able to recover only 20years after the war... then goes on to be an economic powerhouse second only to the US just a decade or two later, is such a testament of the Japanese people's aspirations. Despite the obvious bias, looking mostly through the lenses of the western imagination of Japan, this is an incredibly well made Documentary! Thank you for sharing it with us!

The only thing is that there are some Japanese words that I can't understand and some kanji that are incorrectly read. If you read it incorrectly, it will have a different meaning, so I went back and listened to the video several times. I ended up using Japanese subtitles. I realized once again that the Japanese language would not exist without kanji, hiragana, and katakana. I would like to express my gratitude and praise to the authors for their efforts.

For a Chinese guy like me who visited Tokyo 3 times within one year, this documentary is priceless, not only to know more about the city's history, but also the soul of it.

As a whole, this video seeks to explain Japanese modern history by only watching Tokyo, so that there are many important points missed.

If you look at any of the other countries in the world, you could never see such rapid modernization and advancement in short period of time. It’s rather remarkable. This could only be achieved in a homogenous country, with a superior culture, you’ll never see anything like this elsewhere. Period.
This is almost same as PBS America’s “The rise of Tokyo” but as a Japanese the documentary is well made for American creation, who supposedly know pre and postwar Japan the best among non-Japan nations for historical reasons. We often find out our values in both good and bad ways through the eyes of outsiders.

It's a good documentary. I live in a very seismic country ,Chile southamerica, wherr ocurred the strongest and more devastating eartquake measured in the World (9.5 Richter) and the tsunami arrived in the Japan coast. I understand how they felt during the eartquake, the need to rise again and struggle against Nature.

Many of them had their breasts cut off or received damaging wounds whenever they fought back against the soldier's sexual advancements. Many were also murdered and disposed like animals.During the occupation, the Japanese were also known to have killed Filipino infants as an act of entertainment and stress-reliever. The Japanese also sent "doctors" and "surgeons" to the Philippines, who performed human experimentation of native Filipinos. Some of these experiments included amputations, dissections, and suturing blood vessels of live humans. Surgeons gruesomely performed vivisections on Filipinos. Before such experiments, the victims were forced by the Japanese to dig their own graves first. In some cases, the bodies of vivisected Filipinos were sewed back up, then the living victims were shot dead. In other cases, the vivisected victims were left with huge open stomachs then dumped in their graves along with their intestines and left to die.
Hard to believe how quickly Japan built a western style city that rivalled the originals...and then rebuilt it into the modern high rise box city it is now. Shame. Maybe one day Tokyo will rise again and predominantly have architecture that reflects the best of both east and west.

For a Chinese guy like me who visited Tokyo 3 times within one year, this documentary is priceless, not only to know more about the city's history, but also the soul of it.
I apologise for the suffering the japs caused but at least we westerners didn't let their crimes go unpunished, cause the nukes teached them what true terror and fear looks like I'm just very happy we gave them the help they needed during the occupation.

C'est effectivement dommage. Il s'agit pourtant manifestement d'un documentaire produit par Arte France. Donc ce documentaire possède donc logiquement un son original en français il semble que sur la chaîne ici présente 'Best documentary' c'est la version en anglais qui a été traduit automatiquement en français ce qui génère effectivement des erreurs notamment en termes de dates à plusieurs reprises et un rythme bizarre, des répétitions de mêmes mots. Il serait plus intéressant qu'Arte France mette ce documentaire sur sa propre chaîne youtube en version française.

If you look at any of the other countries in the world, you could never see such rapid modernization and advancement in short period of time. It’s rather remarkable. This could only be achieved in a homogenous country, with a superior culture, you’ll never see anything like this elsewhere. Period.
This is an invaluable video documentary.
This is almost same as PBS America’s “The rise of Tokyo” but as a Japanese the documentary is well made for American creation, who supposedly know pre and postwar Japan the best among non-Japan nations for historical reasons. We often find out our values in both good and bad ways through the eyes of outsiders.

It's a good documentary. I live in a very seismic country ,Chile southamerica, wherr ocurred the strongest and more devastating eartquake measured in the World (9.5 Richter) and the tsunami arrived in the Japan coast. I understand how they felt during the eartquake, the need to rise again and struggle against Nature.

Copying the success of other country is the right way for developing nations. I am amaze by how Japan was able to rebuild and stand up again. I see that culture palyed a role in modernizing a country. I hope my country copy it.
Since ordinary people had little access to information beyond the radio, the government likely had the ability to control the flow of information to the populace at the time.
They were messed up like North Korea at the time,but thanks to democracy and capatilsm they changed for the better becoming one of the most peaceful countries in the world.Which was a huge leap forward since ww2 same with Germany after the fall of their regime democracy was restored once again and for all.

Before such experiments, the victims were forced by the Japanese to dig their own graves first. In some cases, the bodies of vivisected Filipinos were sewed back up, then the living victims were shot dead. In other cases, the vivisected victims were left with huge open stomachs then dumped in their graves along with their intestines and left to die.

Hard to believe how quickly Japan built a western style city that rivalled the originals...and then rebuilt it into the modern high rise box city it is now. Shame. Maybe one day Tokyo will rise again and predominantly have architecture that reflects the best of both east and west.
