Annie Sloan Chalk Paint Tutorial - Painting Vinyl Seats for Dining Room Chairs

  • Hi Everyone! 💖
    I am so excited to bring you this tutorial about how I painted my vinyl cushions and chair backs for my formal dining room table. A few months ago I painted my dining room table with Behr Alkyd Paint and I decided to paint my cushions with Annie Sloan Chalk Paint and see how it would work on this slick surface.
    Here is the video for that tutorial:
    • How to Paint Your Dini...
    I was pleasantly surprised. I ended up using a Clear gloss from Rustoleum over the chalk paint and it did very well. The Annie Sloan clear wax didn't work out for me on this project.
    So far, after a few months, the cushions that I used the wax on and then painted the gloss on afterwards, did worse that the ones that I didn't use the wax on and just used the gloss.
    Overall, it was an amazing product that performed very well! I would definitely use it again.
    I used Annie Sloan Chalk Paint in Paris Grey and

    I absolutely can appreciate the honesty in this video. I’m not downing the chalk paint but other people on TH-cam swear by this when painting furniture. I loved the fact that you gave an update and showed how there are imperfections but still look nice. However I did love the turnout 😊

      Thank you so much! The seats that I waxed and sealed peeled and those are the only ones that have had any issues with. I recommend sealing with a satin finish, if you decide to do this project and don't use wax. 😘💖

    Thank you for all the tips! I was thinking of paining the vinyl of my tufted head board and this really helps! As for the poly, if you want less of a sheen, they make a Matte poly sealer which will keep that flat chalk paint look as well as a Satin (my personal fav which gives it a low sheen but not a glossy look. Happy Crafting!

    Hi, I love Annie Sloane products and have used her paints many times.I have four dining chairs that are upholstered in an off white fabric in the Parson chair style. I am debating about a chalk paint application on them. They are old enough that I can play around with them, but still nice enough to keep.

I would love to see how they turn out. Thanks for watching and Happy Fall! 🍁💖🍁💖🍁

      Hi I need some advice, I guess i did not realize when i watched Jennifer Maker paint a hassock with textile medium and acrylic paint, she did it on fabric hassock and i went and did it on a vinyl hassock and while it covered great it is very sticky, she said i used the wrong paint, i have pictures of what i have done so far but I was wondering if the Fusion Mineral Paint would work over the top of what i have already done to fix this. or can i use Dupli-Color Vinyl & Fabric Paint. you can contact me a pcollette1@gmail.com and i can show you the photos. I hope i can fix this. I have watched a few videos plus the one above and now i am not sure which to use to fix this. i also need to put a stencil on the top of the seat.

    • @SparklyOne
      @SparklyOne  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Patricia, I haven't worked with those paints that you are mentioning, but I would probably try the chalk paint and then a matte finish polyurethane. Maybe those others will work, too? I'm not sure. But, it would be worth a try and see what happens. As far as the stickiness, before you paint it again, try using Krud Kutter to make it less tacky. I'm not sure it will work, but I guess at this point, it's worth a try. You can send me photos at sparklyone60@gmail.com if you'd like. I'd love to see what you are talking about. Best of luck!

    So happy to have found this video! I am planning to paint a bench that has a vinyl seat cushion but was wondering how the AS paint would hold up. Do you think a clear satin or matte poly would look just as nice? I'm not sure I want the cushion to have a shiny finish. I too, appreciate that you shared your experience and what worked and what didn't. I also was happy to see a three month update on how the cushions held up. Greatly appreciated! Your dining set looks beautiful.

    • @SparklyOne
      @SparklyOne  ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Birgit! The paint is still amazing! I would suggest a matte finish, but don’t use any wax at all. The wax is what made them crack. Keep me posted if you can 😀 Happy painting!

    • @SparklyOne

      That's a great question. I really don't know if it would work better, but it's worth a try if you are willing. I think paints today are pretty versatile. I'm not sure if it would peel though. Keep me posted...I'm interested in the outcome 😀

    I bought a wingback chair at the Goodwill store for $5 it is yellow with a blue and gold Oriental or Asian pattern of peafowl and dark navy blue stripes about every two feet so there's probably two stripes across the front of the upper part and 3 across the back. It has a removable cushion seat and it has piping all over it and it has wooden legs that are kind of a Queen Anne style. Unfortunately, I painted legs first which that wasn't very smart, so I'm going to have to paint them again. You can't grab a hold of that Big O fat round brush and swirl paint hard onto that fabric and be gentle around the edges where the legs are! I am painting it a color called Farmhouse Red. I ended up buying some Rust-Oleum chalk paint because I found it for $18 a quart. I am going to paint it and put a University of Oklahoma logo on the top part of the front. I may actually try to do an iron-on. I'm going to try a smaller one on the underside of the seat cushion to see if the heat from the iron ruins the paint. I will do it before I seal it with wax, obviously! Has anyone tried to do an iron-on on top of chalk paint? I cannot believe how well this is covering that peafowl. It is not covering those navy blue striped very well with two coats everything is completely covered except the striped but I have decided to concentrate on covering everything else and not worry if the two stripes in the front and the three in the back still go through. They are symmetrical Stripes that are half inch wide. If anyone really notices them it won't be that big of a deal. The peafowl showing through looks like there's greasy spots. You can't tell what it is and it looks horrible. 2 good coats and a light coat completely covers them. So I'm really concentrating on that. my carpal tunnel really flared up after a full code on the chair and completely finishing the seat cushion so I have stopped for a day and a half and I'm going to give it one more day in a brace with ice before I let it flare up again LOL and I have no feeling in three fingers so it's not very easy to paint LOL I have three pair of Keds tennis shoes that I love but one is called natural. And I hate them! They just look dirty. I have the white ones that I like and I have a Navy pair that I'm worn nearly out. But the natural ones are just unbleached canvas and I just feel like I'm walking around with dirty tennis shoes. So I got out my chalk paint! I was digging through all that I had and I have probably 15 colors, because I bought a bunch of the Waverly paint at Walmart. I really like the Waverly chalk paint. I came across one of the 4 oz bottles of the color Curry. I thought that would be perfect for fall and I have several articles of clothing that Curry would be perfect with and a pair of cropped jeans the curry tennis shoes and several of the different Cardigans and tunics that I have. You would not believe how cute they turned out I'm a actually try to do an iron on. I'm going to try a smaller one on the underside of the seat cushion to see if the heat from the iron ruins the paint. I will do it before I feel it with wax, obviously! Has anyone tried to do in iron on on top of chalk paint? I cannot believe how well this is covering that people. It is not covering those Navy blue stripes very well with two coats everything is completely covered except the striped but I have decided to concentrate on covering everything else and not worry if the two stripes in the front and the three and the back still show through. They are symmetrical stripes that are happy inch wide. If anyone really notices them it won't be that big of a deal. The people showing through looks like there's breezy spots. You can't tell what it is and it looks horrible. To good codes and a light coat completely covers them. So I'm really concentrating on that. My carpal tunnel really flared up after a full code on the chair and completely finishing the seat cushion so I have stopped for day and a half and I'm going to give it one more day in a brace with ice before I let it fly up again LOL and I have no feeling in 3 fingers so it's not very easy to paint LOL I have three pair kids tennis shoes that I love but one is called natural. On I hate them! They just look dirty. I have the white ones that I like and I haven't Navy Pier that I warned nearly out. But the natural when's are just humble East canvas and I just feel like I'm walking around with dirty finishes. So I got out my chalk paint! I was digging through all that I had and I have probably 15 colors, because I bought a bunch of the Waverly paint at Walmart. I really like the Waverly shop paint. I came across one of the four hours bottles of the color Curry. I thought that would be perfect for fall and I have several articles of clothing that Curry would be perfect with and a pair of crop jeans the curry tennis shoes and several of the different cardigans and tunic that I have. You would not believe how darling they're turning out!! I was half asleep when I was painting them and should not have done it when I did. I got some on the rubber around the edge. I was able to take an old toothbrush and a little bit of soap and get it right off. There were areas that was not very even and I took another larger scrub brush that looks kind of like a giant toothbrush, it has very soft bristles and I got it wet and started going over the paint. It really started blending the paint. I need to put one more water down coat on the canvas and let it dry and then I'm going to wax them. I did put some shoe strings in them and wearing the other day because I needed some shoes to wear with a particular sweater. I had three or four compliments on them and had people asking me where in the world they could get some. I told them to go buy them and then they have to bring him to me to get them custom made LOL I may start selling them too! I may as well! I sell a lot of my upcycled furniture

I have just been to one of B and M stores (the bigger and better stocked one) a few days ago and the have Rustoleum, I believe I have seen it in Wilko too. I went for another brand (same properties) though as I wanted a satin finish not gloss. Good luck upcycling.

      Hi Mysti! I never made a video about how I made it. I probably should have. Haha. A friend gave me their giant oil painting and I loved the frame, but not the painting (she didn’t like it either) so I painted the frame white (it was gold) and painted over the oil painting with chalkboard paint. The canvas is still bumpy from the oil painting underneath it, but it gives it character 😂 This measures 4 feet by 5 feet without the frame, so it’s quite large. • @JasmineSwann
    @JasmineSwann 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    I went to an art store today to buy the paint but the lady said she doesn't recommend painting faux leather because its plastic and the paint doesn't soak into the chair it just sits on top and when you sit in it repeatedly eventually the paint will start to crack in places and they won't look good. Have you found that your knee cracks in your paint? Oh, I just watched the rest of the video and saw it cracked :(.
