  • See how quickly you can scale any Revit family without editing families or types. We will create a Scale Factor parameter that lets you instantly & graphically scale any Revit family instance while keeping all their properties and geometric proportions the same. This trick uses a planting family wrapper to enable free scaling of Revit objects.

    I've learnt that trick from you some years ago and i use it mostly to have control over plantings both in 2d and 3d views. But as usual, you explain things very well and you cover the important aspects of the technique.
    You are a very good teacher.

    Why does simply scaling something in Revit have to be such a process. It's really antiquated. Good tutorial though!

      Wow I didn't think of materials 😅 Did you apply any custom bitmap positioning or anything else custom to it? If the material is applied using a parameter, maybe you can reapply it in the project's after scaling.

    I tried it with an tree from bim free objects. It only partially worked when I changed from planting family to generic model template and even then I could not change the height in my model, I had to change it in the family template. There I also could not change it evenly but I could at least change it to a halfway suitable solution. Revit is pretty tricky when it comes to such things but anyways good video.

    If I place this family into a project and place an aligned dimension, I want to be able to type my desired widht, height or depth, but as soon as I select my model, the dimension-text that usually turns blue and becomes changeable, now stays black and isn't accepting any input. Do you know of any way that could fix this problem for me?
    Great tutorial and I really like the tempo!

    • @RVBoost
      @RVBoost  6 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I'm glad you liked the tutorial!
      About the dimension that doesn't turn blue, it could be due to the way you placed this dimension. It's in the project model so apparently has nothing to do with the internals of the family. However, you can try having the dimension reference different edges on the family instance and on the other element in the model. Sometimes just picking a different face or edge when you create the dimension can make a difference.

    You went way too fast especially at the very beginning... still not sure how you made some of those dialogs appear. Anyway, all is forgiven since you showed us how to do something so very useful and I am super grateful!!! I just don't understand Revit's convoluted interface. The number of steps needed to scale an object that in AutoCAD you would simply scale and be done with. Looking to start a career in this software but things like this make me take pause on the sanity of the product I'm looking to master. Learning that this product was a spinoff from PTC (Pro/E) really explains a lot as that product was pretty difficult to deal with too. ;-) Thanks for the great tutorial!!

    • @RVBoost
      @RVBoost  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Glad to hear you liked the tutorial! Revit doesn't allow freely scaling most elements because doing that isn't considered very ... "BIM". That's of course just one opinion so we can just see it as a limitation or a justification for some technical constraints. Despite that, Revit still helps us out in many other aspects of the job :)

    How would you go about scaling a window, door, or other family that isnt placeable without a surface. I believe I am following your instructions exactly but it wont let me even load it into a new family when trying to nest it

    • @RVBoost
      @RVBoost  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Interesting challenge! You should try nesting again with the family's category not set to Planting. Revit might then allow it. If not then it's probably just not a supported behaviour. In that case, your 2nd option is creating a scalable door/window family that doesn't have a host wall, using the same method in the video. You then make a hole on the wall for it in advance before placing the family into the hole. Not a recommended BIM practice of course!
