    I was looking for traditional skep making, but I really like this idea for clothes hampers. The breathability is exactly what is needed.

    Because straw is hollow it can not be compressed without distorting. I think that is why skeps were made from Rye straw which is more like timothy with a narrow and dense stock. I really respect the ingenuity of the build, the new and improved awl that accommodates the trimmed whithie perfectly.
    When the straw was alternated in the jig I thought he was going to use the fingers to weave a corner but instead had the most impressive joinery. Its great, the bees get the comfort of straw and we get the convenience of top bars for inspection.

    Hi Gaia, when you cut the excess straw off of the edges of a wall piece, it seems quite the waste. As well you still need a lot of wood for the corners. Have you tried making all 4 walls at once, by bending the straw around the corners and overlapping?

    yes, in fact some people in Germany are building their hives solely with cob. There is a book in german by Matthias Thun, with lots of pictures and directions.

    I trying to find plans for that boxed stray beehive but the only straw hive that I am finding on line is the skep beehive. Can any one point me in the right direction?

    I know that you cannot use skep hives for the purpose of producing honey, but can you use it to house feral bees?

    • @Gaiabees
      @Gaiabees  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes, straw hives offer a very good nest environment which supports the health of bees.
