I'm interested to think how we can all learn more about this. My major question is how you get the brambles despiked for the lapping cane... it seemed very smooth. I'd like to see this process as we have tons of brambles! I am in Italy and wish I could come to the UK to learn how to make a skep.
I have been meaning to start bee keeping and after 2 childhood friends did so, with one sending a pint of their hive, I was propelled to proceed. I'm in the discovery phase and decided to make a search using different adjectives, including medieval. Bingo, medieval wins! Upon realizing I recall seeing this one you're making in old sketches in history, science, and archeology books, I had to start with the ancient's "tried and true", not to mention clearly successful hives. Learning how old homes specifically designed for their hives with the niche you described, nearest the fireplace, really makes one realize how important honey was to humans. I wonder which may have been more important for its use, medicinal concoctions vs a natural sweetener. My guess leans to medicinal. Any professor knows what was most important?? LMK, please.
Agriculture is the dividing line between Paleolithic (old stone age) and Neolithic (new stone age). People used baskets during the Paleolithic, when they were nomadic hunters and gatherers. A skep would only have been used by folks who had settled down on the land. So basketry is much, much older than bee keeping with skeps.
Thanks for your reply to the other person's question, I too was wondering which came first!? Thanks. Can you also answer the biggest question of which came first, the chicken or the egg?! Ha. Good day. @@pricklypear7516
Hi SW, do you monitor this account? Looking for 4 bee skeps for a Chelsea Garden project and Diana's work is perfect. Would you be able to reach out to her with my contact details please. Thank you
I'm so happy we are keeping this ancient craft alive. We are here for those who want to learn to make skeps!
This video could be three hours long and I’d be enthralled the entire way. More please. 🙏 🐝🐝
