    Great kit. Well thought out. Everything you’re going to need. Nothing you don’t. If i might add a suggestion. A heavy duty 55 gallon contractor trash bag is just so versatile and compact and light… it’s something I will always carry. You can use it to store massive amounts of water by digging a hole in the ground a lining it with the bag (theoretically 55 gallons worth lol). Filled with debris to create a mattress. Cut the top and sides and it makes an impromptu rain poncho. Waterproofing gear. If you get an obnoxious blue color it can be used to signal in any climate or place. From coniferous forests, deciduous, desert, snow. Ground sheet. Waterproof shelter material. Stuffed with grasses for a flotation device. Collecting ants or rain for water. Carrying things santa clause style. Sledding down snow covered hills as a slick sled. Great video.

    Good pack. I may would add some stuff for this:
    - a whistle
    - a signal mirror
    - some glowsticks
    - an extra flashlight (AA sized if size and weight matters with an 14500 battery plus a pack of AA alkaline battery). - Convoy T3 is a great one.
    - an extra pair of dry socks in a sealed plastic bag
    - paper tissue
    - insect repellent
    - paper to write on, a pen and a local tour map
    - some energie bars
    - ??? did I missed something?

    A tip for the clip modification. I noticed, that the female clips on the bag have a slot in the middle, so that you can make it loose without any fuss. You can saw the same slot in the male clip, then the whole mod is without sewing.

    Great video! I have the same bag and have ordered a similar small pouch to attach to the front after seeing yours. The male female swap on the shoulder strap is really clever. Did you sew the webbing on the bottom by hand? I’ve got a sewing machine but can’t figure out how I would sew the webbing on the bottom with the bag assembled.
    Cheers.

    • @BackcountryKiwi
      @BackcountryKiwi  2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Thanks Dag!
      I hope the extra pouch works out for you, I think its a very handy addition to the bag.
      The clip swap was something I had wanted to do since I got the bag, it just makes more sense to me, I really think they should just come like that, I don't see any downsides to it.
      Yup I sewed the webbing by hand, it's not the prettiest and it took me quite a while but it seems to be holding up well so far.
      Personally I think the bag should also ship with attachment points on the bottom, I think it would appeal to alot more people if they did.
      Thanks for watching and I'm glad you got something out of it.
      Cheers.

    Hey mate, great video! Clear and to the point. I love the mods to the carry strap/"hip belt" and on the bottom of the bag! And yes, just like @MarkMcCartney said, THIS should be the original kit and Helikon would be smart to get your ideas on board! How did you do the sewing? Especially clean work on the belt. Also, what brand are your pants (if you don't mind sharing?). Cheers!

    • @BackcountryKiwi

    Hi, new subscriber here...
    Great kit .
    I do think a maxpedition falcon 2
    Would be a better option .not huge, but MASSIVELY more versatile and much larger capacity.
    You're obviously very knowledgeable and I'm probably advocating the maxpedition falcon because my skills aren't good enough to manage survival with a tiny kit .
    But I'm always striving to improve .
    Kind regards from England.

    Great video. I just ordered one of these and now I'm looking for ideas on how to best put it to use when it arrives haha. Do you know if the bag will ride/carry as a hip belt? Over the clothes to where it can ride like a butt pack and then slung around to the front when needed? (Does that make sense?)

    • @BackcountryKiwi
      @BackcountryKiwi  ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks!
      Yeah it will definitely work as a butt pack, you might want some sort of suspender system, especially if it is fully loaded. But it should work well.

    • @BackcountryKiwi
      @BackcountryKiwi  2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Heya Rick. Thanks for the comment.
      A Canteen of water is enough but it depends on a bunch of factors like how far I hiked, if I'm having a fire, and how messy my cooking is haha.
      I can always boil more water if need be, but I might add some water purification tablets into the kit.
      Cheers.

      Heya Jet.
      Thanks for the support bro.
      If you want a 3x3 tarp (or bigger) I'd recommend taking a look at a DD hammocks tarp. Well made and has heaps of tie out points.
      If you want something smaller then you could go the route of a poncho, like mine, or take a look at army surplus bashas/hootchies.
      Hope that helps!
      Cheers.
