Gurkhas were called Rifles as they asked to be named as such post delhi 1857 when the Sirnour battalion later 2 Gurkha rifles fought 8:30 delhi with the 60th rifles of British Army during siege of delhi.
It was General archdale wilsoñ who granted them this honour

Gurkha Rifles name was given to them in 1857 in Delhi by General Archdale Wilson on thier request as they were very close to the 60th Rifles of the British Army. Both were posted at Bara Hindu Rao in Delhi now a Hospital

Sadly, neither did you nor wikipedia mentions about Gurkhas and Khukuri in Assam Rifles. Nepalese is regimental language of Assam Rifles. Originally, Assam Rifles was filled with Gurkhas upto 80%. It was only in mid 80s other communities were inducted in larger percentage.
