How do you justify your claims that "Singapore" is dredging this sand? Did you check the IDs of the people working on the boats? Were they Singaporean? Of course they weren't. They're Cambodians who are all too happy to sell the sand to make a buck. This is a stunning short film. So often the conversation about environmental stewardship is depicted in tragedy: whales chocking on plastic, birds drowning in oil. It is strangely refreshing to see the degradation of this planet reflected so simply and so beautifully. It reminds us what is worth saving and tells us why it should be.

@@psup8 == that is not really relevant. increasing natural sand consumption demand is mainly due to growing human population. growing human population leads to the increasing demand of new houses/buildings and expansion of city/town (urbanization). expansion of city/town leads to increasing construction activities. increasing construction activities means increasing demand of concrete material. concrete is made from mix of cement, sand, aggregate and water. so, increasing demand of concrete in construction industry also means increasing sand consumption. in some small island countries, they have limited land size so they also are forced to import sand to expand the land space.
find sand alternative like manufactured sand or quarry dust. we cant prevent sand consumption. as human population keeps growing, we need houses. houses are built from concrete. concrete needs sand. road construction also needs sand. alternatively, if you say can build houses from timbers, then you will cut down a lot of forest anyway.

country governments around the world have to seek sand alternative especially manufactured sand (M Sand) or quarry dust to replace natural sand as main material in construction and others. i'm civil engineering research student studying concrete material btw. :)

It's really hypocritical of Singapore to advocate for sustainability when their sourcing is very unethical. Same thing with these "sustainable buildings" that are actually made of timbers that are products of deforestation.
A very poetic lady and documentary - I had no idea Singapore was built on sand from Cambodia. When she said people without their own land are like refugees it makes me wonder what we are doing to ourselves as globalised citizens who dont feel attached to any one place in particular....- let alone to people like her who are living localised community based and ecologically sound lives that are slowly being destroyed. there is the largest river flowing through my city. Back then, alot of unauthorized sand miners taking up a lot of sands.Until one day, one of the city bridge is collapse into the river. Only the middle of the bridge is collapse. It happen around 80's. My mom told me this story. But the sand miners won't stop until late 2000's because they ran out of sands and there's nothing to be mine

to be more precise, desert sand is round in shape due to wind, water where river sand or rock sands are edged. during construction, the desert sand doesn't grip/mix/combine well in a cement mixture and likely to give way after certain wear and tear over some years. the middle east is booming with construction for the last 20 years and importing sand from Australia, India, why? China is another major sand user due to massive construction as well.

Cambodia is one of the poorest countries in the entire world. They have a life expectancy of 67 years and over 2 million of their population is in poverty. Singapore paid Cambodia millions of dollars to buy mere sand. Millions of dollars that entered into their economy and benefited the lives of many Cambodians. The overall good that the money did to Cambodians was far greater than the harm it caused. Good job environmental activists. Your naive ideals prevented poor families from getting a much needed source of income.

Desert sand is worthless, as only sand from rivers and lakes have the right consistency to be used. If we could use desert sand, it would solve so many problems, but it is just not possible.
