I'm pushing eighty now (like a few others on here I think!). I experienced some of these roads whilst following the 1968 Geneva rally in my then new 850 Mini. My late wife took the 'snaps' of this great holiday and our hotel was an inflatable tent! The nostalgia created by Harry's upmarket version of our trip was immense. Thanks Harry and Mrs for renewing these lovely memories.

Memories I understand and share…I did a Grand Tour of Germany in 1968 in my Dad’s 1964 Austin 1100 and later many more times to Switzerland, Austria and Italy. Our last Tour was 2019 recreating 1968 and just before the germs arrived and stopped us. Next year we must restart! 😀😀😀

The effort he puts in regarding his content/film quality/knowledge and being just a really likeable bloke makes this one of a handful of car related channels that I follow out of the thousands on this platform. Outstanding stuff indeed and that Lotus is a real stunner as well.

I left the pub I lived at in rural Bedfordshire on my wee motorcycle (250cc), bound for Milan via the Mt Blanc Tunnel in July a quarter of a century back. Got through to the Italian side, and looked back at the Alps. Forgot about Milan, and headed over the top into Switzerland, via Grand St Bernard Pass. One of my most memorable day's riding ever. 'Tis a magnificent part of the world. Did the Gottard pass, and a few more that trip too.

Something that might have gone unnoticed: Harry talked about the car, the roads, the weather, the scenery, and everything except...
    ... Except...
Except range anxiety. I've no idea what petrol costs over there or how far it is between garages, but it was blissful to just enjoy the trip with Harry and Mrs Harry and not for a single moment have to worry about the car's state of charge or the miles remaining.
Be honest. If this Lotus were an EV we'd have been treated to non-stop updates on how much range it had left in it.
Of course, I'm not saying that an EV wouldn't have handled the same journey with ease, BUT this video would have been peppered with tiresome battery stats and range predictions. Yes it would. It's all that EV drivers talk about - even when they have no need to.
The nagging doubt that there MIGHT have been a hitch would have haunted every hairpin and spoiled the relaxed mood.
So thanks, Harry (and Mrs Harry), for an old-fashioned brand-new car journey which focused on what was important and took the vehicle itself for granted.
    What a refreshing change.

I just loved the contrast of beautiful scenery, stunning car, the glamour and the use of the map. That paper map was somehow the perfect addition that just matched driving through Switzerland and harkened back to a time when driving in Europe was glamorous. Satnav is a wonderful thing, but it will never have the romance of a foldable paper map that by the end of a touring journey, has small holes where the paper creased from constant folding. Each hole representing a wonderful memory. The Emira somehow encapsulates old-school charm of cars of a bygone age. Quite an achievement for a car that has literally just rolled off the production line.

Is it true that the Swiss police are very strict about speeding and give out draconian fines or can confiscate your car ?

    • @petertaylor123
      @petertaylor123 ปีที่แล้ว +1

@@hpman911 I'm not sure on the confiscating your car. Never heard of that in person, but I guess if you are doing ridiculous speeds...it might happen. But when/if you are caught, speeding is expensive. Don't speed in a tunnel! Sometimes the cameras are really difficult to spot as they can be hidden behind a gantry support pole or directly behind a '100' sign, and are dull grey. Not painted high-vis yellow like the UK.

The Pirelli calendar. The must have calendar for every young man in the seventies and eighties. If I am correct the tyre to have on your car was the Pirelli P6.

That car is absolutely STUNNING! Gosh for that price point you can just revel in contentment among the big boys because this little package is just so stunning to look at. And at every angle too! Major achievement to the boxy skateboards they made in earlier models. Well done Lotus!!!

I think you have chosen the best colour combination for your Emira. The Nimbus is a very classy colour and it show off its curves and angles well. Love, the scenery, the drive/tour so far. I can’t wait till the supercharger kicks in. That copyright nonsense is BS, IMO. Thanks

Oh Harry that scenery brought back memories of a Rico Rally I went on a few years back. Like you, we were hampered by the weather closing the Stelvio Pass on the Swiss side but we did ascend to the summit via those awesome hairpins. Unlike you we did not have the luxury of all that luggage space as we were limited to a Tesco carrier bag each for luggage as we were in my friends Noble M20!

I stopped at Lucerne 20 odd years ago it was staggering. Accerbilks diamond encrusted Clarinet had just been lost at the railway station. lots of motorcyles parked outside pizza joint with keys in the ignition. I lived in South London in those days, just wow. us Celtic people stayed in Switzerland for 10,000 years before continuing West

After realising the situation with water on the rear deck I can't believe Lotus didn't come up with solution, it can't be that hard!
Passes are best visited just after they have opened again, when the snow banks can be very high on the side of the roads.

Great colour choice, certainly a good looking car and sounds awesome. I can see why you were so excited when picking it up from Hethel. The journey through Switzerland looks amazing! Just one small observation…that air vent on the tail gate, surely they could have tweaked the design so the water didn’t drop through onto the engine? 🤷🏼‍♂️
