I will never forget the New Year's practice in 1997. Yuko and I were tentatively warming up and he came over...."Do you mind if an old man practice with you?" WHOOP...he had moved from standing up to a splits with an ear-to-ear smile and a chuckle from the belly.
    Amazing man.

Sensei Asai is the best karateka of all time in my opinion. It´s very good to see that Asai Karate lives so well represented by Sensei Andre Bertel

I trained with him a few times via sensei Kato and without doubt a one off . Very dynamic and flexible . Very very different to sensei kase and his karate . You see how at the highest level their physiology determines how they execute their technique and their interpretation of it .

By the way: Someone here's claiming that :"Kanazawa was even better Senseij" I especial do NOT commenting this theory. 1. Because I admire BOTH; an 2. I consider myself not enough to evan just "discuss" those kind of "questins". But I highly recommend you one fine video, where both legends are fighting* each other in kumite (means*: just by half speed an half kime, almost like playing...). Very teaching and amazing...! And I here espcial do NOT tell, who was winning...;-)- Oss...!

I have deep respect for the late master Kanazawa Hirokazu Sensei. He was a senpai (senior) of my teacher, Asai Tetsuhiko Sensei, and they were personal friends.
Of course, Kanazawa Sensei founded his own group SKIF and we have a good relationship with them here in Japan, along with all of the other groups.
Rather than asking "who is the best?" I think it is better to ask "who is the best mentor for me?" In my case it was Asai Tetsuhiko Sensei.
I have close friends who a direct students of Kanazawa Sensei, and the they say the same about him. Also, of course, other instructors for others,
What matters is training and respect for all.
OSU and kindest regards from Japan,
      AB

Asai Tetsuhiko Sensei was said to be 'one in a million' according to Nakamura Masamitsu Sensei. I think that number could be bigger, but it still conveys a strong point.

Paul RupRai - Asai, Shihan was senior to all of them and was the technical director of the JKA. Do you understand what that means? Asai, Shihan is widely considered to be the most innovative and technically superior karateka of the last 50 years. Kanazawa, Sensei is great but I promise you even he considered Asai, Shihan his superior

First of all, at least thinking about arguments of others WITHOUT insulting them helps understanding their point. Also, have you ever heard of something called "different styles"? There is no such thing as a best karateka because all of those high ranking karatekas you named developed a style of shotokan karate of their own. But most importantly, you dont have the right to insult AN ENTIRE POPULATION just because a few reporters tried to do the job they were told to do without much insight in the topic. You cant blame the reporters for not dealing with other karatekas if they were told to do research on asai sensei. Moreover, I want to remind you of the fact that Asai sensei's karate was much more focused on practical usage, other than the "standard" shotokan karate that is mainly focused on sports and championships.

I am student of Kanazawa, graded from white belt to Yondan, I think he was more well known, but Asai was a very senior JKA instructor, Asai has his own style , more fluid, a little like Chinese Kung Fu, Kanazawa was more traditional in his approach and taught the Karate of Nakayama, and Okinawa style. Both are grand masters of the art and no one is better than the other, its about interpretation at their level. The Masters transcend basics,,,,,
