    One thing that is for sure is that I am definitely not a master. I am simply trying to master my techniques, but that is just a dream goal. My target is to one day have good karate, which is hard because I am not a natural. I just try my best. Kindest regards, Andre

      Your humble comment doubled how much I admire you now! It is easy to see immense speed like yours and become envious and focused on imitating that level of skill.... a real challenge. Inspiration without imitation is hard. But you inspire me.

      hi Sensei. Oss!. I have been in many brawls, usually protecting a female. I recently got in touch with my previous sensei and I have really used a mix of Jiu Jitsu and karate for street fights. I don't know if he is ok with what I've done, but I know you have used yours as a protector type too. It was literally your job. I see the efficacy in your movements and I would truly love the chance to attend a seminar some day. I started Shotokan at age 9. I've done some MMA and (stupidly) street fights. I truly see that you walk the walk. OSS!
      Additionally besides trying to focus on Jiu Jitsu a bit I have tried to make sure that if I throttle a heavy bag that I am fully aligned and not trying to show off. The architecture and biomechanics behind your karate techniques aren't ego only (we all have one) - they're literally mathematical. Alignment and physics will knock a big dude out. Structural efficiency saves energy and kicks ass

    By the way, I respect all approaches.
    Nevertheless, I practice karate as a martial art for protection, not for play. Karate as a martial art is `not for everyone', Training is hard, there must be contact, and practice is focused on effectiveness outside the dojo.
    In my experience, many people claim to follow this Karate way, but their physical training doesn't. These videos are reflective of karate as a traditional Japanese martial art.
    Waffling and theory doesn't make a martial art.

    • @sylvanusjoseph1140
      @sylvanusjoseph1140 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I admire your technique and karate but you have much to learn in judging by your control of technique. It takes more skill to cut a leaf in the wind than a bamboo tree rooted but wavy. It is amateurish to kick a still opponent in demonstration just to show a technique. Sadly it shows little of your martial arts knowledge in whole.

    • @andrebertel
      @andrebertel 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@sylvanusjoseph1140 I agree, but imagine if I wasn't kicking slowly and lightly.
      The fact is that I am not hurting anyone, otherwise no one would return to my seminars and certainly no one would offer to demonstrate.
      Yes, there is a little more contact like here in Japan, but to injure a stationary person for a demonstration is disgusting. I would never do that and haven't.
      Best wishes from Japan.

      @jandoe2576 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@sylvanusjoseph1140 These were senior students, so being able to take hits should be part of their skill set an judging from the footage here it is. That is why you practice body conditioning in Karate, it should be part of every single training session from the get go, and after years of toughening, body conditioning and let's not forget building the muscle to protect the tissue underneath you might be amazed what your body can take. That's not theoretical internet chit chat, it's just what i see at my Dojo every other day.

    Great to hear! I came back half a year ago after more than 15 years break, and I can only encourage you to carry on. My humble advice: 1) Practice! Hard! Every day! 2) Get yourself a heavy bag and actually HIT something, best tool there is for power and speed. Hitting the air is never enough. 3) Be patient.

      @@luka2298 No, boxers don't have superior hand techniques. And Boxers don't do kicks. Many kickboxers learn their kicks from karate, Muay Thai, and Taekwondo. Boxers have better footwork in some cases (like Manny Pacquiao and Mohamed Ali). Without the gloves on, karate is very strong. Some UFC champions have karate background, like Machida. Many boxers have very slow hand speed cause they do hooks. Hooks are powerful but very slow and easy to defend against. Watch some Russian MMA fighters who have learn Wushu (Kung fu). They block hooks easily using their elbows, not fists. You don't seem to know anything.

    Very beautiful and inspiring, Thank You Sensei Bertel ... :-) !!! All Your videos give a very impressive idea of how effective Traditional Karate can be and they should be seen by those people who criticize traditional way saying that You could never use it in a real fight for self-defence (that imho is one of the purposes of a martial art but NOT the only one, nor the most important, anyway ...) ... Unfortunately it happens (at least in my country, Italy) that traditional Shotokan is often taught and practiced in a way that brings a certain degree of stifness and hardness to Your body, following a certain "false" idea of strength and "kime" ... And people after 40 start to have some serious problems in the joints of knees and back, suffering for pains, etc ... it happened to me (and many other people) despite i keep doing stretching and exercises every day ... ON the contrary, Your way focuses on fluidity and softness, despite the power expressed by the techniques and i think that this is the way one should practice in order to have a good karate even when he's getting older ... Now i found a school that fortunately has this type of "setting" ... anyway, very beautiful video !!! And Amazing Ushiro Geri :-) ... i'm a very poor 2nd Dan and i wish i was taught that way when i had a coloured belt !

      In practical martial arts, these are the types of people you want to avoid. They cause injuries.

    • @sochin7777
      @sochin7777 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @Martin Turner It's humiliating for the student to be hit in front of his peers like that. Anybody can yoko geri a stationary target. He should be demonstrating full control and he should be hitting pads with full contact, not the other way around. Don't you agree?
      Imagine if he came to a bjj place and wanted to learn something and the coach demonstrated something on him, in front of his peers, but instead of putting the focus on the technique he choked Andre out.
      What is the reasoning behind pulling through with a technique during a seminar for you?

    • @fabienbordes7788
      @fabienbordes7788 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@sochin7777 He control a lot, but put to each hit some power. You learn a lot when a sensei hit you a little like that. This can look rough, but you are pretty happy to take some light blow like that. :D
      If Andres didn't control, they would be hurt. He is not even using 10% of is power. With a strong stance in karate, you can take without injurie some light kick.

    Hi, quick question. At 4:25 you show a takedown followd by a kick, then state that stepping in to punch is wrong so you should kick. Isn't moving towards a downed person to hit them unnecessay force for self defence? They are not an immediate threat because of distance/grounded as well as facing away from you.

    • @KuuK36
      @KuuK36 10 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      If you fight against one person that is, yes. But facing multiple attackers you'll need to take each of them down for good. You probably won't win against three attackers by just throwing them to the ground. And also it won't always be possible for you to make an escape, leaving you with no choice but to fight them.
      Basically you are right - as long as you don't have any particular reason to do so, hitting a downed person is against the law (at least where I'm from). But then again I am not a lawyer so I can't tell you the details.
      And on a final note, something I have heard very, very often: Fights have to be taken case by case, meaning every situation is different, laws won't always cover for every decision you make. As a rule of thumb, I've been told, it's okay to base your actions on this principle: As long as every decision you make in a fight can be considerd reasonable and as such be presented in court, you won't be the one found guilty. The judge himself is human, too.
      Though of course, I can't assure you, that this will always be the case.
      Just what I heard. If anyone has other views or information on this, feel free to correct me.
      Regards

    • @neilcook8774
      @neilcook8774 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      PizzaA Hi PizzaA, yes i see what you mean and agree. I just wanted to know if this instructor knew that. Too many martial artist don't know the law and essentially teach people how to go to prison. Maybe it was mentioned but not shown in the video, i don't know, i just have a bug about people doing whatever they want and calling it "true karate"

    I've turned the hips over further and not used the heel... This was not to injure the participants (this is something we used `for training' in the course for kicking accuracy practice, and so we could use a little more force).... I explained this to the participants on this drill.
    Of course you were not there, so your comments are based on a look through a key hole.
    If I don't control my ushiro-geri it is a `little different' from what's featured in these videos... ;-)

    Fair comments.
    I think if one competes traditional shobu-ippon is best for karateka as it develops that `one chance' skill. You treat the opponents chudan gyaku-zuki is like a stab with a knife to your abdomen.
    Now I've long retired from competition (when 30ish) I continue to hit the heavy bag with full power and use the makiwara. In the instructors training the kumite is can be a little `rough' but still jodn is controlled to avoid a blood bath. Full-contact for the bag is good enough.

    That's kind of interesting. One question, if you don't mind: I practice on the bag very often, and I have come to notice that when doing bag work, I automatically fall into a certain "kickboxing mode", meaning my punches look more like boxing but like "correctly" executed tsukis. My mawashi geris pretty much resemble what Thai boxers are doing. Have you noticed something similar as well?

    5:04 this is not ok. Uke is clearly not prepared and slams his head on the floor. Sensei Bertel has great skills, he doesn't need to be rough on his uke like this to command respect. Stuff like this has the opposite effect.

      No tiene ningún respeto a los uke...los trata como un saco de golpeo...se puede aplicar sin tocar, o por lo menos controlar esos golpes...me gustaría verlo con un uke que no se someta y no se quede quieto...o en un octógono vale todo. Mis respetos a su trabajo, pero no comparto su soberbia.

    It is interesting how some people talk about control. We must be living on different planets... It seems they only have no touch and full contact and nothing in between.
    Asai Sensei, Yahara Sensei and Abe Sensei instructed that control is good contact, but not injuring one's training partner (as demonstrated in these videos).
    If not controlled, the training partner is injured. THIS IS CONTROL. If one doesn't understand this, that's OK. However, effective training will be difficult.

    Norman, I have a kiwi accent (NZ), and insofar as Japanese karate terms go - I simply pronounce things correctly as I have spent a lot of time training here in Japan and have a Japanese wife. In regards to the demonstrations, I am teaching the basic form. I.e. - opponent attacking with oi-zuki etc... In a freestyle context it would be "very hard" for the trainees to learn what I'm teaching: probably impossible. Kindest regards and all the very best, I hope that my text doesn't have an accent!!!

    I grew up doing Shotokan and have been off and on with Jiu Jitsu. Jiu Jitsu and MMA are great to do but the guys who really go hard with it trash their bodies. A karetaka at age 50 will often be healthier and technically, in a fight, often be able to take out some MMA dudes just due to the amount of abuse MMA brings. Karate is for longevity. I plan to still learn Jiu Jitsu but with caution. I like having a spine that works. I may have to get back into the Shotokan world for vitality

    Единственно, что плохо в этом виде единоборств, это бесконтакт, который рефлекторно закрепляется в памяти. Что даёт ложное чувство уверенности в эффективности своих приемов отработанных без ,,проноса". Хотя многие мастера советуют при нанесении удара представлять цель дальше....например при нанесении цуки в средний уровень сПЕреди представлять что удар наносится в позвоночник...насколько это эффективно, не знаю.,.В момент реальной схватки, это как то вылетает из головы.

    By the way more videos to come... I am sure my two obsessed "fans" who clearly haven't got a life (as they love spending so much time on `Andre TV') will continue their comments. ;-)
    The TECHNIQUE talks for itself... And there are plenty more on my channel and elsewhere.
    Yes, I'M STILL TALKING WITH MY KARATE (see parts one to four of Germany 2012, and Italy 2012). Also all of the other videos on my channel and elsewhere... Not to mention my blog... Or attending my daily karate classes...
