    Words cannot express how painful it is to watch that heel strike. That's probably why some say running is "bad for your joints."

      Running barefoot on a field that has not received rain/been watered in a while I found was harsher on my feet then on asphalt road. This was with shoes on. But, that same field after a good rain, (an inch or more) I could go all the way up to my max sprint speed and not feel any pain at all. This is a half acre field, 300 by 400 feet. I could keep doing sprints from one end to the other for an hour barefoot with no issues.

      Running in any form is tough on your joints just depending on your form it tougher on your ankle, knees, or hips.

      @@Lollololollllljj Yes, but the arch in your foot is an incredible shock absorber. You just have to land on it by not whacking your heel down first. You also want to train it by not wearing thick, gel cushioned running shoes. They promote injury rather than prevent it. I'm very tall and quite heavy but I wear zero drop, minimally padded shoes and have no issues. Although I only do maybe 20k per week right now.

    Part of how I learned to run properly was in cross country, my coach encouraged everyone to shed their shoes and socks and run on a football field, that way we'd feel how we ran, and it was eye opening.

      They walked like this in medieval times. Because the heel takes the weight but is easily punctured by thorns, and stones and easily twisted, the weight was placed onto the toes first and transferred as it was found to be safe in trails and combat.

      He left out the part where you need to relax your arms and traps. That's energy wasted. If you watch long distance runners you'll notice their arms barely move. On the other hand, if you watch short distance sprinting they swing their arms, then it not such a big deal. Also basically learn to fall forward. Let forward momentum do the first part of the step

      That's just to let you get used to it, I've been running like that my whole life. Barefoot or shoes makes no difference, always been faster than 90% of my peers. I thought everyone ran like this but this could explain why I'm faster.

      @@walkelftexasranger I was talking about the way of running, you can do this with shoes on too.
      But if you walk around barefoot all the time you will be able to walk on gravel without pain it's only sharp things like thorns or glass that pose a threat. I don't even walk barefoot often but I have ran on gravel before, wasn't pleasant but it actually wasn't that bad. I was able to ignore the discomfort.

    3 best mental cues for long distance: 1) knees up 2) elbows in and 3) relax. Any time you notice your mind has wandered bring it back by saying those 3 cues to yourself.

      so your feet should never go noticeably further than your knee when you foot hits the ground, and bringing your knees up will get your stride longer. it’s also safer and just better general from to run with you knees ‘driving’ (as I like to think) the movement rather than trying to bring below the knee further than your knee. it also makes the force of hitting the ground not stop at your knee, prevents injury there. for the elbows, I believe they’re talking about how your arms swing. some people keep their arms still, but I like to swing mine. bad form is to have your hands swinging across your chest, moving your torse at all, moving your upper half around too much. people will put too much torso into their form, and it’ll push the air out of your lungs, making it harder to breathe. if you swing your hands front and back, not crossing the center of your chest, and basically just going almost totally straight front and back, swinging from the shoulders, your body will waste less energy and be more efficient. all running form makes running more efficient. so knees up is to get more efficient power in the legs and therefore speed, and elbows in makes sure your arms aren’t swinging and restricting your lungs, stifling your breathing. relaxing also preserves energy! hope it helped

    I spent six and a half years in the Army running incorrectly. Literally no one taught me to run properly. I would routinely get 14:30 on my two mile runs.
    I had a professional trainers analyze my technique. She made me do exercises like you are doing and she made me change shoes. My run time dropped by almost a full minute and a half.
    The Army is like the only organization that will actively sabotage you and then scream that you aren't doing better.

      If u spent six and a half yrs in the army and didn’t know correct running technique by the first year in ur unit. I have a feeling you get micromanaged a lot. Not everything needs to be hand fed to u. Do your research and work on yourself it ain’t like they told u to run like that.

      Zero drop or barefoot shoes can help a ton with that. I’ve had minor knee discomfort and lower back pain since middle school. Guess my joints are weak oof.
      Right after HS I started wearing zero drop shoes to continue training myself to walk & run ball first. About 3 months in, my knees and back felt almost completely fine; my calves and feet have never been better too.
      Only problem is that normal shoes and striking heel first will cause me pain after some distance even if I just walk. I even got shin splints cause I hiked with normal boots. And I know it was the boots as well as form because I could hike over twice the distance with little issue in my zero drop shoes.
      My recommendation: Feiyue’s shoes are cheap ($35 I think?) and offer more support than true barefoot shoes while still having zero drop, (no height difference from heel to toe) as well as remaining incredibly flexible. Some of them look nice too if you’re worried about that, makes for a great transitional shoe.
      But I cannot stress this enough, if you’re serious about swapping, take it gradually, could get injured if you’re not careful. But hey even people 70 years+ have made the change so so can you!
      PS: Sorry for the wall of text, this is honestly one of the best things I’ve ever done with my body. Not even joking when I say a pair of shoes changed my life.

      Do 10min walking backwards with control and put the toes down before the heels. (Knees over toes position). Also try going up hill. Good for your knees and ankles

    The Achilles tendon is designed like a spring, in fact were one of the only animals on our planet with such a design. Properly loading and effectively utilizing the extra "springy" force provided by your Achilles tendon is the key to a perfect stride.

    Best advice ever. So many shitty videos and challenges to start running on a daily basis even if it’s a certain km distance “only” but then surprisingly enough they end up getting injured.
    Here he breaks the movement down from the start cause let’s be honest if you’re not a teenager or regular runner then when was the last time your body and nervous system was accustomed to running??
    Everything takes time unfortunately.

      As a 52 year old who wants to race a fast 7 year old these exercises are so important! Otherwise your looking at Posterior tibial tendinitis which is really really not fun or the more common in a planter fasciitis switch still sucks so these exercises really really are valuable and runners should do them before they end up off the trail

    I unironically experienced an evolution in my running form when I was in high school. I practiced backwards running because I thought it would be fun and to make up for having flat feet. I couldn’t keep up with other kids, whether it be because running would hurt more because of flat feet, or general lack of fitness. Then the fitnessgram pacer test was introduced and lit a competitive spirit in me. While I couldn’t match others in speed, i made up with sheer determination and reached 100 laps in which they stopped the test. For the final test of a mile-run, idk, but I changed my running form after getting tired into using the front of the foot like in this video and felt a huge difference. Even got asked about joining track.
    TLDR; running is pretty fulfilling

    Running on your forefoot/mid foot is intended for short, powerful bursts of energy and agility. It’s not intended for long distance or endurance running. Running from heel-to-toe absorbs so much more shock and energy. You still have to be aware of your heel-to-toe gait and make sure you’re not hammering all your pressure on the heel, but if you’re trotting along for long distance or going for a jog you want to heel-to-toe.

    I really wish our coaches taught us this. I missed half the running season because of shin splints caused by a bad running form apparently. I never knew there was a correct way to run

It's ridiculous to condemn one set of recommendations without recognizing that the same condemnation can be applied to any running form advice. And it's useless, unhelpful, and obnoxious to just comment snippy nuanceless complaints like yours without bothering to add any actual elaboration or alternatives. If you're going around comments just naysaying things and contributing nothing constructive, the problem isn't the content, it's your choices.       @@JoshTalks11 I did medical massage for several years, worked in healthcare already for several years before that, and have gone on to study pathophysiology and epidemiology more deeply in preparation for other medical tracks. With all due respect, the consensus of medical professionals and educators beats the heck out of the amount of anecdotal data you just based your argument on.
      Sure, running doesn't have a high rate of MAJOR injuries, especially not when compared to plenty of other activities I love. But it does have a very high rate of injuries in general, particularly of the repetitive motion variety and others related to chronic overuse. By all means, it's quite a safe sport, but also by nature the fact that it's very popular and accessible means many people are doing it without the benefit of coaching, and also many people are engaging in it for more hours and over more of their lives than happens with many other sports. It lends itself to high rates of many types of problems. Your definition of/connotations for "injury" are probably more specific and serious than what I'm referring to when I use that term.

    The legit way of training to run correctly. Most of the people dont even have the correct knowledge and try to teach their own believes. Ive been training in track and field for 7 years and it infuriates me to see people have pain while running and ignore those strict, but very helpful exercises. Keep it up man, great content youre making

    Biggest thing that changed the way I run was taking time to understand that legs are just springs attached to levers. The more levers and springs you can utilize, the less each individual component is stressed.
    Which is why I switched to running primarily on the balls of my feet and keeping my heels in the air as much as possible. It's difficult for the first few months, but after awhile, your calves, hamstrings and glutes will adjust and it'll become second nature.
    Also, be prepared for tennis ball sized calves.

    You have no idea how much I needed this. I was a stomper as a kid when running, lot of wasted energy. Now over 10 years since my last gym class and that time mostly spent at a computer desk, I'm overweight with no muscle mass or elasticity. I started to walk/jog in intervals but my technique was all over the place, I literally forgot how to run, and I don't have the fitness to do even stomping style I had when I was a kid as it ruins my back and knees.

      Back in the mid 2000s, as a teen, I learned how to run entirely on the balls of my feet. My heels would never touch the ground during a 10K run. Nobody taught me not to heel strike. I don’t understand how this’s not intuitive since it’s so effective to run that way. Heel striking is very inefficient because you can’t rebound off the heel.

    I started wearing barefoot shoes and walking with a forefoot striking pattern for the past 5 months or so. Just the other day I walked 2 miles and for the first time in years I full sprinted probably over 40 yards. Painless. It felt like I was floating, and I was FAST. Seriously, walking correctly is life changing!

    This is the same things I did before every skateboarding session to improve flexibility and rotational balance, it works!! Put weights on your ankles when you skate, it is very difficult but when you finally get the balance, you ollie much much higher and can control your tricks easier..

    I've been moving on my toes all my life - it works for cats and it's been treating me well - plus I can run with high heels on as a result!
    The less momentum you direct down, more momentum you direct forward - which basically translates to "light steps = more speed"

    Running barefoot is such a good feeling. My unscientific/unpopular opinion is that running form will become more efficient over time, solely from running plenty of miles and mixing in some speed work(hill sprints are the best).

    I've always walked, not runned just walked, on the front of my feet. It's how I learned to do it because stepping heel first would hurt my head. It's a common thing in autistic children. They had to try and teach me how to walk "the right way" but I never really learned it well and still prefer walking and running this way. Running this way is way faster and because I've done this my whole life I have amazing balance too.

Like come on 🤣 I told someone this when we were doing hills. Like look, see how you lead with your toes going up? If you do that going DOWN just watch how you absolutely blast down the hill.

      My brothers were in track in 6-8th grade and I became aware by looking at their track shoes that they run on the balls of the feet and watching races on television...don't know how people run any other way...when I was 19 yrs old, eons ago and took dance classes it was sort of the same thing, dancing ballet (not on point) and modern dance we were always on the balls of our feet ready to move to go across the floor learning dance squences...

    Something that always help me was thinking about leaning forward while running. When I first started running competitively in 7th grade I would lean forward just to make sure I was landing closer to my toes, as I got better I started standing up straighter and taking longer strides. This also helped me out of the blocks.

      Ex military here, with knee and hip problems. Heard that zero drop and "barefoot" shoes could help. 2 years in and things feel much better, not perfect, but better.
      Made the mistake of going for a short 1/2 mile run in my Merrell trail gloves a week after getting them. 5 days of absolute calf-destroying soreness ensued.
      Point is, I don't care how fit you are, start with the 100 meters. Lol

    My track coach in high school was a former Olympian and coached team USA in the 96 and 2000 Olympics. This man has drilled in my head and many of teammates minds proper form. Toe up. Knee up. Pull the elbows back.

    No wonder it felt much more comfortable, and I wouldn’t get tired as fast since my weight was being properly supported, unlike those hard heavy heel drops that even disturbs your breathing. It can be quieter too

    I don't know why but i've always gone toe first like this ever since i was a young kid. Not only does it give you better support and more speed when running, but if you walk like this too you can make your footsteps so light that they're practically silent... Best way to work the calf muscles too lol

      I agree … I hardly even walk “heel to toe” unless I’m in a fairly lazy mood but even then I just kinda drag my heel a tiny bit that’s why the heels of my heavy ass boots always wear out first lol , but it always just felt more natural to me to not slam my heel into the ground and roll to my toes while running … I just always felt like I got more explosiveness when running on the balls of my feet, like

    I learned this by accident simply by turning the tread mill to max (15mph)to see how long i could endure. Once i was reaching my limits and about to give up, i pushed through the pain and my form naturally changed from heel landing to "running on my toes", like instict kicked in once my brains only thought was "just keep running". I always ran and jogged on my heels until that happened, changed my life lol. Actually vastly improved my running endurance. I didnt relize what an important spring your foot is

      This doesn’t make much sense. All
      Elite runners are midfoot to heel strikers.
      Forefoot running is not sustainable over long distance it’s a very taxing running form for your muscle groups.

      @Wood and Resin Designs. com i was running on my toes, my fat ass just wasnt going fast lol, i run barefoot on the tread, the roughest patch on my foot is the ball and toes. Also people land on the ball of their foot and "run on their toes" when jogging so im wondering what speed has anything to do with this. Telling me im slow is debatable because fast is subjective if not relative, totally fine with that. But dont debate me on objective facts, especially when you have no evidence to support your claim. That's just stupid.
