My neighbors laughed at me last year when I said I was building a fishing line fence. This year they are all in a line at Walmart buying fishing line. We have a lot of deer but none of these deer got through the fence. My fence height was 9’ and my line was placed every 12”. I did run an additional diagonal fiberglass pole leaning away from my vertical pole. I tied fishing line again every 12” from the ground up. The deer can’t see it so when the run in to it, they stop but don’t jump because they can’t see what to jump. It’s the least expensive fence and it works.

This is why double fencing also works, Deer wont jump over 2 fences close to each other because they want a place to land when they jump and a double fence confuses them.

Would I need to use taller posts to protect a tree? Or could I just place these shorter posts and the fishing line further away from the tree so that deer would touch the line before ever getting close enough to reach their necks out and start nibbling?
I had 3' chicken wire around an 18" to 2' red Japanese maple sapling. Deer, not only chewed the top the last several years, but learned to stick their heads in and chew along the bottom branches, too. Lost the entire center of the sapling and one side branch this year. All that remains is the other side branch, so it's a goner.
They are now working on a green Japanese maple that is taller, maybe 4'. I have 2 of them. The other took off this year and is about 5'. They just started nibbling the tops of the smaller one. It's even further away from the suspected point of entry. I swear they were watching me water it the other day, or perhaps they saw me cutting twist ties off that were girdling the branches. Somehow they suddenly found this tree. Again, they must've been watching me. I swear.
These trees are very important to me, as my cat was nibbling on them when I had brought them inside to prune while they were still in their pots. My cat has kidney disease. I want him to enjoy them. His name is Willow, and he is named after a tree. I'm feeling sick tonight, worrying about both my cat and his trees. I threw some chicken wire around the smaller tree, as it was getting late, without hammering any pins into the ground to secure it. So now I'm worrying that I broke branches or a grazer will tonight, as the wire is just leaning in and pushing on the branches as it curls around the tree.

Been doing this for years, and for the first few years, it worked fine. Unfortunately, they get wise and start finding ways to get through. I think desperation and starvation from the worst winter we had a couple of years ago made them determined to get through those lines, and now that they found a way through, they now do it all the time, even when theres still vegetation out there. They EASILY chew the fishing line (been using the 50 lb) and even push through between lines once they leave a big gap between them. It's been hard trying to keep up and repairing the lines almost daily now, so I've started looking for other ways to keep them out of my plants.

The key is to make something strong enough to keep deer out but easy enough to move around so you can get in to weed and water. I used some chicken wire this year with cheap plastic green stakes. They are super easy to move in and out when I water and weed but the stakes bend and give too easy. It worked for awhile but last night they finally worked up enough nerve to just trample right over it. Today I have bit off green pepper plants, chewed up beans and they even munched on my tomato plants. A lot of sweat and dirty hands right down the toilet in one night! Looks like I'll have to use stronger posts next time. That will make it harder for me to get into the garden. I thought about using them drawstring nettings next time for my peppers and tomatoes. The last few years I used netting and hoops for my beans and that works great to keep everything out but it's a lot of work.😮‍💨

Monofilament is also the best way to protect the koi in your koi pond in the spring, and summer from large, fish-loving hawks. In this instance, you use the invisible fish line across the pond, often in the pattern of half a pizza. The line doesn't concern the smaller birds which may or may not see it. But the raptors with keen eyesight can easily see it and will judge if there is adequate clearance for their wingspan to get through. In the fall, leaf netting is called for and hungry Herons are often hungrier than they are smart as they unwisely climb into the pond underneath the leaf netting.

I tried this a few days ago. I drove 5-foot high poles into the ground and strung six lines of 30 pound fishing line from top to bottom and pulled them tight, then went one step further and sprayed deer repellent around the perimeter. None of it made any difference whatsoever. The very next morning and every morning since, deer tracks everywhere and they destroyed all my plants again. I even found tufts of hair caught on the fishing line where they squeezed between the lines to get in. I've given up and taken everything down.

@@egverlander I only partially agree with you. Sometimes government interference is intrusive while other times it's necessary. For example; I don't want the government interfering with my love life or my body. On the other hand, without the government creating a mandatory minimum wage, employers would pay workers slave wages. In the case of the deer, without government regulations the deer would be hunted to near extinction like bison, wolves, otters, lynx, etc.

@J S Sure.......if the pellets are around 30 grains....and travel at nothing less then 900 ft per second. Otherwise.....its not enough power to penetrate......or break bones. 22 shorts work best. They are the quietest. Just the bullet drops much more over say......100 yards. But can just aim higher.

Simple answer to deer Buy a 22 lr rifle.... Buy subsonics ammo only. ( shorts work good too ) Zero the scope in at 50 yards. Aim 2 inches high at 75 yards.... 6 inches high at 100 yards. Subsonic ammo is very quiet.... shorts are even quieter ! Plug the deer in the rear quarter......they will not be back ! Anything else is a joke ! Its about " getting rid " of the deer !

This is very harmful to deer and other animals that come across it. By it being invisible a running animal will at the least be cut by the line and more likely to become entangled in the line leading to severe injury and even death to the animal.
