    I watched this video before I did this job today on an '01 Crown Vic w/105k miles.
    A couple notes. My old bearing broke while driving and had to be towed home as the wheel was basically being held on by the brake caliper. The main structure of the unit bearing came off fine but the bearing shell wouldnt budge off the spindle. I had to use a grinder to cut it away. I did nick the spindle surface some.
    The new bearing wouldn't go over the spindle. It would go about 1/2 inch, no more. I sanded the spindle to smooth the surface and remove corrosion (I live in the salt belt). That helped a little, but still no luck.
    I then put the whole bearing assembly in my oven at 450 for 15 minutes to try to expand it. That definitely helped, it went about half way after heating, but it still didn't fully seat. At that point I decided to just force it the rest of the way. I put the big socket on the center and hammered it the rest of the way with a heavy hammer. I don't know if that is appropriate or not, but it went on. So your bearing might not go on as easily as it did in this video.
    Also, I used a 35mm socket to get the spindle nut off. The nut (factory) is some weird carrier that has a stack of washer sized nuts inside it. Mine fell apart while removing it. The new spindle nut I got from AutoZone was 36mm. So I had to buy two sockets and they were each about $20. So that was annoying.
    I have it together and it seems to be working ok after a 20 minute test drive.
    Thx for the video.

      you probably bent the shaft the wheel hub goes on.. from the heavy forceful impact of the break and damage! replace it if I were you!! its not that expensive

    If I was doing an entire front end rebuild, caliper, pads, rotor, soft brake line, and wheel hub, couldn't I just unbolt the caliper bracket and brake line, then pull off the entire assembly at once when the hub is loose? It seems a lot easier that way then undoing each part.

    The front wheel bearings on the 1995 share the same concept as the 98-02. The tools necessary might be slightly different.

  • @aaronvaz1
    @aaronvaz1 11 ปีที่แล้ว +9

    Good video but the 03+ Panthers do not require the 36mm socket. There are instead 5 studs that hold on the hub and the bolt size is common. This makes the job easier.

    • @Odessa45
      @Odessa45 ปีที่แล้ว

      There are four (4) bolts that go into the hub from the back side of the steering knuckle.

    i thought this was going to be difficult for me.. :) but it seems to be a very easy job with regular tools you''ll do the job..thank you so much for this video, i can wait to replace my bearings on my 2001 crown victoria.

    can the hub bearing cause the front end to have a slight shake at highway speed. and cause a low speed wobble if really bad.

    • @rusty4252
      @rusty4252 3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      I know it's late but to anyone watching in the future, yes. I have bad wheel bearings in the front and mine has a wobble at like 75+ mph. It also has a slight pull to the right.

    Just a note. The Ford service manual cautions to not reuse the 35mm retainer 3b477 (35mm or 1 3/8") and the 1N135 seal cap - warning hub could come off.....

    Unfortunately if you remove the wire from the wheel bearing, there will be a hole in the bearing that will allow road dirt in. That will then contaminate the bearing grease and destroy the bearing. You need to purchase the correct one so you do not run into any issues.

    The rear wheel bearings on your 2001 Mercury Grand Marquis would be different. We currently do not have an auto repair video that shows you how to repair the rear wheel bearings on this vehicle. If you have a Haynes or a Chiltons manual, the repair should be covered in them. We carry the Haynes manuals on our website 1aauto.com Part Number: 1ASXX00004 888-844-3393

    I just ordered from 1A auto my new hub assembly for drivers side but problem is the strange nut thing is factory on my '01 Grand Marquis and can't find what size it is to loosen the hub nut from the factory because it's 5 very thin nuts that are all separated and held in place by a sort of retainer nut covering!! what is that? and how do i get it off?

  • @pvsheridan

    Hello Mike/1AAuto: Thanks so much for your videos; VERY helpful. Two questions: (1) My understanding is that the 35mm hub nut should be replaced with a new nut each time such is removed post-torque. Is that true? (2) I have a 1997 CV, and the hub/bearing part number seems to be the same as the 1998-2002 part number. Is that correct? Thanks so much, Paul

    You may be able to use some of the basic procedures to remove the hub on your 2009 Ford Crown Vic. The size of the tools that you may need to use would more than likely also be different. You would also need to check a Haynes, or a service manual on the recommended torque settings for the axle nut on that particular year. Hope this helps you out. Best Regards, 1aauto.com 888-844-3393
