My dog has seizures. Once a day. For aboutfrom 2 to 3 days in a row, like every 6 to 8 months. So its not super often. My local vets haven't tested him for anything save a blood analysis which came out ok.

Same here, 6 moths old golden retriever gets seizures maybe once every other month, but when he does, he gets 2 to 4 with in 24 hrs
Most vets can’t help me and the once’s that “do” only take my money and an specially it’s so so expensive.

I thought a seizure was a seizure. Hugging my dog while he's shaking/wobbling/drooling finally got him back to normal in less than 10 min.

Thank you for the informative video. I have witnessed this our senior pup. Unfortunately, there's not a whole lot vets can do at this time due to possible under lying health conditions. When she came to and we just loved her and kept a calm environment. Hoping we don't witness any more, but it really helps to know more, then it's not as scary.

My dog has had 11 seizures in the last seven months. They have taken his vision, his hearing and now it's crippling him. With the vision and hearing loss he looks drunk all the time and is constantly hitting his head and getting ulcers in his eyes because he runs into things so since he can't see he hits his eyeballs into things. He's on diazepam and Levetiracetam. He sometimes has cluster seizures. He's 15.5 y/o. His last seizure I now have to hold him to poo and sometimes to eat/drink water. These past two weeks he's been having accidents inside, since the last seizure. I HATE what seizures are doing to him. HATE IT!! I'm so angry. He was my husband's service animal and he was very, very good at his responsibilities in caring for his dad. I love this boy so much. With ea seizure he also loses weight. He was 35 lbs now he's 24. Like a commenter below said, she holds her dog while it's seizing. I do the same. I hold him tightly because he can't hear me but I need him to know I'm there with him. My heart goes out to all dogs who suffer seizures and to their owners who have to witness them. It's heartbreaking.

@kati-ana- my dog suffered from weekly to 2- weekly tonic clonic seizures for almost 2 years. It is now 10 weeks that he is seizure free. He was on 2-3 drugs from the vet and hospital admission almost monthly due to cluster seizures. I called him “the dog who refused to die “. I did not give up on him. We stayed on levetiracetam but we refused the other meds because we found they made him worse . We refused diazepam because it made him super loopy. Anyway, we tried acupuncture from a traditional chinese vet practitioner, vit c, took kibble away, did home cook food, and everything natural as possible, herbs, chinese herbs for seizure dogs. Nothing worked. I finally found info on ketogenic diet and cbd oil. My vet said cbd is still being studied. They didn’t know about keto. Anyway I did keto diet by following simple recipe from ketopet sanctuary where there is a calculator. And I got good quality cbd oil. My dog is 88 lbs and he gets 6 drops twice daily at 3mg per drop. Seizure free since day 1! He was on keppra 750mg 3x a day, but now he is down to half tab morning and 1 tab night and we plan to reduce gradually to nothing. My dog is happier we are happier. I found a channel called Dan Scott and he gives great info too. I hope this helps somebody and your dog. Goodluck

Thanks Loonylinda. It is a good thing that your vet ruled out the extra-cranial causes (e.g. kidney and liver failure) with the blood tests, so that he/she can now focus on the appropriate medication (e.g. Pexion) to try and get the seizures under control.

My dog started seizure last month, went to the vet, they given some shit to my dog and they prescribed antibiotics and diazepam..and my dog almost never had seizure for a month. Then it came back..bring her again tu the vet..they prescribed the same medicine. Recover from her seizure but she keep walking in circle and also shivering. I don't know what to do. the vet said just keep continuing give her med.

My dog, a Border Collie/Corgie, who is 10 years and 8 months old began having seizures a couple of months ago. He’s always been kept up on his rabies vaccine boosters (we started the three year boosters six years ago), and is an inside dog only being walked on a leash or placed in the dog park that’s fenced in for outside free time. He had his first seizure in the dog park(grand mal) after which he acted like he didn’t know us. After he came to his wits, he wanted to be cuddled and wouldn’t let any of us leave his side. Fast forward to today, Einstein has had a total of seven seizures in 24 hours. After the fourth, we took him to the hospital. He is now on an anti-seizure medication, an antibiotic, and a steroid to try to cover the most likely causes. So far the seizures he has had are less severe and more mild even though he is still having them. The worse case is that he has a brain tumor. 😢

Thanks for this video. My vet prescribed 125 mg of Keppra (non- extended release) every 12 hours for my 7 kg 5 year old Havanese. It initially reduced the seizures for 2 months but then resumed. So then he told us to give him the same dose every 8 hours. That reduced the frequency to 1 per week. So now he added 32 mg Phenalbarbitol and 125 mg Keppra every 12 hours. Hoping this will work to significantly reduce the number of seizures to less than 3 per year. What are your thoughts Doc?

My 3 years old Staffy X Bullarab girl, had the 1st seizure a month ago, as she went out for her morning things about 6:20am, what was very scary, as on the end she stopped breathing, and I had to quickly revive her... by giving cpr, mouth to nose breath... it was about 1-2 minutes, but felt much longer. I took her to the animal hospital, as 6:30am the vet was closed. At 7:30am the first hospital sent me to another hospital as they are only open for 12hours (not 24 as on the internet) and they were closing. About 8am I arrived to the 2nd hospital, where the doctor, after I told her what is happened, examined my dog, charged almost $800 for blood tests only and told us, possibly she digested some rat poison. I told her that is almost impossible as all of my neighbours have dogs and as we have good relationships, they would not throw poison over the fence... she checked the blood results again and told us something serious happened as her blood is thin and not clothing in time... she could bleed out. She told us, it's looks very serious and it's highly possible my dog got bitten by a snake, and we have to act quickly, because as times goes by, it could be irreversible her situation... The doctor told us she will send the blood to a laboratory, but it takes 2-3 days to get a more detailed results, so I had to sign and agree to give her antivenom treatment... ($1400) I didn't understand and we pointed out, my dog looks very happy, now playing, jumping, licking... does not show any signs of being unhealthy, poisoned or bitten by snake. We asked her about any visible signs of snake bites on the lip, paws...? But she told us, it's not always showing signs... I asked her could you please check my other dog ( her brother) as he was outside with her. His blood test showed the same exact results. Thin blood, not clothing, but a looking healthy, happy dog... We were puzzled... I had to leave my girl for the day. The doctor gave my boy a vitamin K tablets... As I arrived home, I called back the hospital to bring my 3rd dog (another brother) to check. He was not with them outside at the time of the seizure, but later he was outside for a while. On the afternoon the doctor checked my 3rd dog blood test as well and she told us, he is in good health... his blood test is normal. ( I didn't received this result). She told us my girl received vitamin K as well, intravenous and the Brown and Tiger snake antivenom and she did not show any bad reaction... I asked if she can give me some discount as both of me and my wife lost our jobs due to Covid, what she agreed and we ended up paying $2800.
Our girl was very happy, playful and hungry. 2 days later we received a call from the hospital about the blood test results from the laboratory, and the doctor told us, my dogs have a healthy blood test results and the hospital had an error in their blood test... What??? I am gobsmacked... ( so because the error in the blood test, we gave antivenom to the dog...? Isn't that dangerous? ) not mentioning the bill, what money I could use now for brain scan...?
My first thought was, okay I understand, after 2nd lockdown, economy is very bad everywhere for everyone... but come on! We should trust the hospital... no?
As today this morning 8:20am (1 month later) she had her 2nd seizure. She did not passed out, like the first time. I stayed much calmer, checking her breathing and heart. It was about 1-2 minutes again and after for a couple of minutes she was dizzy. I kept her calm, and after when she was able to stand, she was standing and starring in the dark part of the house for about 5 minutes, when she had some water... poor girl.
The interesting part, in both cases: 1st she went out, eating some grass, the first thing in the morning. 2nd she wanted to start playing, jumping with her brother, ( excitement, low blood sugar??) when she collapsed. ( she loves to eat, maybe getting chubby, but she loves to exercise as well...)
I am going to investigate further what causes her seizure, as soon as I can, as right now I ran out of my savings, and I am reading everything from the internet. If you could give me some advice, I would really appreciate your help. Great content. Subscribed. Thanks.

Hey Norbi1au. Thank you for sharing the story. It is evident that you really love your pets and will go above and beyond to help them. I can understand your frustration and that is unfortunately what often happens with these seizure cases.
Due to the complexity of the symptoms and the endless list of possibilities that can lead up to seizures, it can become really challenging to get to the root cause of the problem. I can understand that spending close to $3000 is a hard knock to take during these difficult times, especially if you don't really have a definitive answer yet.
The good thing is that if the blood tests are normal for both dogs, then many of the extra-cranial causes have been ruled out (e.g. organ failure, low blood glucose, electrolyte imbalances etc.). So my line of thought would be to now focus on intra-cranial causes. This could be something like granulomatous meningoencephalitis, brain tumours or idiopathic epilepsy. Diagnosing this specific cause may require a CSF tap or MRI scan, which could end up being very expensive.
If the dog has more than 1 seizure every 6 weeks or the seizures lasts for more than 5 minutes, I would advise you to speak with your vet to see if they would be open to the idea to start anti-epileptic medication and monitor the dog to see if the seizures go away. If it does, then you at least know that you can control the symptoms and then you just need to adjust the dosage according to your vets recommendation to reach the optimal concentration. I have seen great results with Pexion and Phenobarbitol, but Kepra (Levetiracetam) and Potassium bromide will also work.
I wish you the best of luck and really hope that you and your vet will be able to help your doggos. Thanks for subscribing. :)

@@DogtorPete Thank you so much for your advice. I am more anxious in the mornings, as I hoping the seizure, it's not coming back. I started to give MCT oil, Omega3 fish oil, and Turmeric with Coconut oil, regularly as I have at home now and doesn't costs anything. Also I heard about CBD oil to try. They are on Raw diet since they are puppies, as they had problems from, - and didn't like, - the dry kibbles. I am going to discuss with the vet as well, the other options, you mentioned. Thanks so much again.

@norbi1au I am glad you found the advice useful. :) It can be beneficial to try out these supplements in addition to the anti-epileptic medication and some holistic vets do recommend using them for their various health benefits. Just make sure that you research each supplement properly to be well informed regarding the potential side effects, as with any medication.
Good luck with your efforts. Let me know if you and your vet managed to get the seizures under control. :)

When should you start timing your dog's seizure? The total event, or just the convulsing? Can a dog have a grand mal seizure followed by smaller seizures that you can't see? Like facial ticking and licking and chomping and snarling?

    • @MJ-gj6mj
      @MJ-gj6mj 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

I think the chomping and such is seen before or after the main seizure. Although I'm not sure if it's a part of it in terms of timing. Probably the main convulsions are most important to watch for. Great question. .sorry you didn't get an answer:)

My 16 year old dog had a horrible seizure so I rushed him to ER. The acting Vet said that my dog could have brain cancer. I had my dog exrayed and he has a large mass near his lung . He is an older dog , therefore I do not want to do chemo if that is the case. Another vet advised me that he is on Palliative Care so just keep him comfortable. I have given him .5 Trazedone pill and Gabapentin (1 pill) to help him calm down and relax. Any recommendations?

My dog is a rescue and been with me for 2 years. He is still young and was approximately 14 weeks old when I rescued him. He loves playing ball and is very active. Tonight he was sleeping on my bed and I was watching TV. He suddenly awoke and started foaming at the mouth and thrashing about. I just sat with him and soothed him waiting for it to pass. It lasted about 3 -4 minutes. He is now very restless and walking about but getting calmer. This has never happened before. It is past 10:30pm and will take him to the vet in the morning. Will this now be a regular occurrence or a one episode? I suppose no one can answer that?

My Cane Corso has had 2 seizures. The first one was mild. But the one she had today lasted 5 minutes. When I tried to put a cold towel on her she became very aggressive towards me which caused my other Corso to hold her down. Once it safe I tried to approach her again. This time she tried to attack me. Which caused my other attack her. ...It was horrible.. Is their anything else I can do ? I am so heart broken. As soon as my grandson comes home. I will take her to the vet..😢😢😢😢😢

Op jou video afgekom. Dankie vir die inligting. Ek het twee beagles gekry so amper 'n jaar gelede. My rean kry aanvalle. Dink jy dit is ok as ek net so aangaan.

Hey Hansie. Baie sterkte! Ek hoop hy gaan sommer nog baie oud word sonder enige probleme. :)

Thanks so much for the helpful info. Our 8 year old West Asian Village Dog has just started having seizures at age 8. He has had 3 so far all approximately 5 weeks apart. He’s been to two vets and a veterinary neurologist and they can’t give us an answer. We are living so anxious and afraid to leave his side. Luckily I work at home so I can be with him all the time, but it’s hard to live like this. Im starting to think it could be from heat? He is from Russia with a very thick coat and low heat tolerance. We live in Sweden, but it can still get up around 30 celcius and high humidity here during summer.
We were thinking of trying CBD oil.

@@stuckcamping hello! Thanks for asking! He is doing great! He hasn’t had any seizures since august, and we are pretty sure they were caused by a poisonous tree in our yard called Laburnum. He likes to drink water outside, and this tree is very messy when it blooms and loses little blossoms everywhere and it was impossible to keep them out of his water bowl. We had no idea it was poisonous!
It seems the seizures happened shortly after he would drink. Now we are getting the tree cut down so it doesn’t happen again!

I'm sorry to hear about your fur baby. It is a difficult decision to decided when to let go. It really depends on the severity of the seizures and what the underlying cause behind it is. I always prefer to do a proper clinical work up to see what is causing the seizures and then a proper treatment plan and prognosis can be established. But if all this have been done and the pet is still not responding well to treatment, then euthanasia is unfortunately a valid option to consider. Best is to discuss this with your vet and to make an informed decision together. Best of luck!
