      What's really sad is that her mother is the one that drove her to her death. Her mother wanted her son to be a great star, and she was resentful that Karen was the bigger star. (Her brother loved it. he hated how they pushed him).
      Her mother constantly called her fat, and told her she needed to lose weight, even when she was skeletal. Her heart gave out from being malnourished.

    Karen was one of a kind. There will never be another like her. She had such a pure calming voice. And she was a terrific drummer. That was her passion even more than singing. Sadly we lost her so young. Thankfully we have her legacy left in her music. The Carpenters had so many great songs such as "(They Long to Be) Close to You", "For All We Know", "Goodbye To Love", "Top Of The World", "Sing", "Yesterday Once More", "I Won't Last A Day Without You", "Please Mr. Postman", "There's A Kind Of Hush (All Over the World)", "I Need To Be In Love" & so many more.

    Karen's voice ... this song along with "We've Only Just Begun" are an exercise in voice control. I've said before, when Autotune was invented, they used Karen's voice as their template.

    Karen really was truly one of a kind. My mom introduced us to her, via 8-track (Yeah I went there. Lol) when I was 9 going to/from school daily. I was devastated on 2/4/83 when they announced her passing a couple of weeks before I turned 21.
    If you haven't seen it already, you should check out a jazz medley she performed with none other than the incomparable Miss Ella Fitzgerald on what was to be the last Carpenters variety show called Music, Music, Music in 1980. Two STRONG WOMEN with 3 octave, contralto voices singing jazz, nothing like it! I'd love to see you react to it but do yourself a favor and listen to it anyway. Smooth! Peace, love and blessings to all. ❤

    Aside from Karen's magnificent contralto voice, her brother Richard was a master at arranging, keyboards and especially layering lead and backing vocals. He could make Karen and himself sound like a full choir. This is beautiful, but it is melancholy.

    • @scottgorski7931
      @scottgorski7931 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      So many forget that Richard was the genius at arranging the Carpenters music. He had the talent to make any song fit Karen's vocal talent. And all she really wanted to be was a drummer, which she also did masterfully.

    Thank you for showing so much love and respect to the Carpenter's music, especially Karen. She understood what it was to overcome the bad or the sad feelings by walking through it with courage. And sometimes that means allowing the feelings to remain just long enough to make us stronger. Her poor body and mind had been through so much, and she had tried to be strong for so long. It was time for her to go Home, for reasons we will never understand. Rest In Paradise, indeed.

  • @scottgorski7931

    You don't need the lyrics when Karen sings, you can understand everything she says. The voice of an angel here on earth. all that while playing the drums. When you want to listen to Christmas music no ones voice fits better than Karen's. Gone way to soon, God must have needed an addition to the heavenly choir. Karen didn't step to a different octave, she would glide with no effort.

    Saw them in concert back in '71 (I think) at UGa. Great show. Afterwards , I stopped at a burger joint to fuel up. They were in there! I went up and chatted for a few minutes. Karen seemed a bit timid, but was sweet as sugar. Richard was also pleasant. I will always remember this interaction!

    The wrecking crew was an amazing group of musicians that played for many artists. Glen Campbell was a guitarist for them. You need to check him out. He was amazing! He passed a few years ago from Alzhiemers. He didn't even know how to read music. Great story!!!

    • @dennisloveland498
      @dennisloveland498 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Glen Campbell...one of the great guitar players in country. Two others were Roy Clark and Chet Atkins...check them out as well. But of the three, Glen was my favorite. He had a ton of hits. Some of my favorites are Rhinestone Cowboy, Sunflower, Southern Nights, Galveston, Try a Little Kindness, Country Boy (You Got Your Feet in L.A.), and my all-time favorite, Wichita Lineman!!

    • @jasoncarman9656
      @jasoncarman9656 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Gotta put the “Guitarman” himself Jerry Reed in that group. Helped Glen write Southern Nights, and gave Chet (Jerry’s idol) a new start by teaching him how to play his style and break him of typical chords. As well as tons of instrumentals he gave to Chet. They were each other’s favorite players eventually and Lenny Breau later on. Reed , a master at so many things…God bless them all as they created a lifetime of music to enjoy!.. Peace✌🏻

    The Wrecking Crew was a LEGENDARY group of studio musicians that played on almost every significant album recorded in LA in the 60s. The Beach Boys, Sonny and Cher, The Mamas and The Papas, The Monkees, you name it, they were the band on the actual recording. There is a great documentary about them available online, called "The Wrecking Crew"

    My late father was raised in New York. He passed in 2002 and would've been 100 years old in 2 months. He saw every legend you could shake a stick at. He saw Sinatra in the 1930's, 40's, 50's, 60's, 70''s, 80's and the 90's. My brother and I took him to the last one at the Circle Star Theater in San Carlos California in 1992.. Great show by the Chairman of the Board. Without hesitation he would tell anybody the 2 best female singers he ever heard were Billie Holiday (who as a teenager my Dad would sneak in and watch Miss Holiday perform back in his youth in New York) and Karen Carpenter. Who he said had "no equal and never will". God speed Devin. I really enjoy your reactions. RNB

    God bless you for your willingness to state God's Word. Im on my 60s, so remember KC very well on the radio and TV specials. Amazing, but predictable how 99% of You Tube reactions are similar to yours. They were most successful in early/mid1970s when she received 4 grammys. She began, with her brother Richard, by playing drums. Recognized by 1975 Playboy poll as rock drummer of the year. KC's voice was the best female voice ever. No auto-tune, gimmicks, or screaming. Sang to you with mesmerizing emotion, perfect pitch and enunciation. Her voice made you listen to her. She had no professional voice training. She never knew true love, nor how good she really was. She was never happy with way she looked. She had serious onset of anorexia in 1975. She died Feb 1983 at 32yo due to complications from anorexia.

    Since you asked…😉
    “The Wrecking Crew” was a group of first-call L.A. session musicians that played the backing tracks on hundreds (and hundreds) of huge hits from 1963-1973, for artists like The Carpenters, The Righteous Brothers, The Beach Boys, The Association, Cher, The Mamas and Papas, The Monkees, and so many other musical acts throughout the 60’s and into the early 70’s.
    There’s no doubt that you’ve heard them on some of the songs you’ve featured on your channel…For example, Wrecking Crew members Larry Knechtel (piano), Joe Osborn (bass), and Hal Blaine (drums) played on Simon and Garfunkel’s “Bridge Over Troubled Water”, which you’ve covered in one of your episodes. 😉
    Along with playing on hit records, members of The Wrecking Crew also recorded the themes for many TV shows as well - shows like Bonanza, MASH, Hawaii Five-0, The Pink Panther, just to name a few.
    There is a great documentary, “The Wrecking Crew”, which is currently available on TH-cam and Amazon, that tells the story of this incredible group of studio session musicians, that I think you might enjoy checking out.
    😉🙏

    I was a teenager when Karen was huge in the 70s, I also was suffering from an eating disorder, all I would do is drink water, I never touched my food, my brother just returned from California (he took off on his harley when he was 16), he figured out my eating disorder and he would take my water everytime we would sit down to eat, I know my brother saved my life!! I had a great teenage life, I constantly went to concerts, partied with people who became really famous, but I like remembering them "when" we were young and having a great time!! Phoenix was a great place to grow up in the 70s, we were there for the boom of rock and the boom of Phoenix!! I regret nothing!!

    The Wrecking Crew, though not an actual band, was the nickname given to the top LA session musicians of the late sixties and early 70s. They were in the first class inducted into the Musician's Hall of Fame and performed with everyone on that era. The musicians of Toto were their successors in the late 70s and 80s and were inducted into the third class of the MHF.

    Great sister and brother group. Karen passed away from a heart attack that came from anorexia. A beautiful voice silenced to early.

    Waooo!!!....Congratulations my friend Devin!! ...Would you like to reach 20,000 or more subscribers this week?...Well here you have your best gift of your life!!....Today it is very rare to find reactors like you who have never reacted to the best singer in the world, Dimash Kudaibergen, who has 7 octaves and 3 semitones vocal range (An alien) ... Maybe someone made you a request to react to Dimash, but you have not had time .... I am going to dare to recommend that you meet Dimash, because when you do it for the first time, your life as reactor will change forever ....For example, the number of views that you have today, it will increase by 300% in a matter of a few hours and you will get a lot of new subscribers.....But when you react to Dimash, don't do it with his most recent songs ... I recommend that you go to the year 2017 and react to the song that made him a global idol ... I mean the performance he did Dimash from the famous French song called "SOS D'un Terrien en Détresse", when he participated in the famous Chinese reality show The Singer in that year 2017 ... With that performance Dimash earned the reputation of being the best singer on the planet, so I recommend you start with that one.... You can also start with the other famous live version of that song that Dimash did the following year 2018 when he was invited to the famous Slavic Bazzar festival in Belarus .... Both performances are from another planet...And I have to give you a warning: Never react to The World Best videos, because they suck!...Your life will never be the same again, after reacting for the first time to Dimash...And your first reaction to Dimash will be something very special, so I recommend that you do the best job of your life as a reactor, because that first video will be seen by thousands of people around the world, maybe millions...I hope to see you first reaction soon and if you don't mind, I'd like you to mention me as the person who recommended reacting to Dimash....Here you have the best high quality video of Dimash performing S.O.S. Live 2017.....@

    The Wrecking Crew was a group of studio musicians in LA who played on hundreds of if not thousands of hits in the 70's from The Beach Boys To Sonny & Cher to Frank Sinatra. There's a great documentary about them. There's also a great documentary, Standing In the Shadows of Motown about the Funk Brothers who were the studio musicians for countless Motown records.

    Just a thought, because I know it to be true ... songs like this are actually therapeutic to people experiencing melancholy feelings, which this song exemplifies perfectly. I speak from experience when I tell you, whenever I was feeling down, James Taylor was my go-to guy, because he sang about the same or similar things I was going through. Singing along with him to those songs made me feel sort of like I was, well, let's just say, "confessing", and BECAUSE of him, I got it out in the open, audibly.
    That made me feel like I was not alone ... because I knew then, someone else had already charted that course, before me, that they had made it through ok, and that meant that I could make it too. I could see a light at the end of the tunnel but, I knew though, it wasn't an oncoming train. Now, I KNOW you believe that God gave us obstacles to overcome, but I also believe, he gave us the tools to deal with them. To me, people doing sad songs sometimes, is 1 of those tools we've been given, to help us cope with those issues, and to KNOW, as YOU say, it's GOING to get better.

    The Carpenters and especially KC is my favourite singer of all time and I just wanted to ask if you already knew that she played drums and in this video in particular because you said nothing, but I guess that would happen as you were watching everything except the screen. That's if you were watching a screen or listening because it sure didn't look like you were paying any attention to the video, so my apologies if watching the video is not your thing.

    It’s my understanding she was a drummer before a singer. The en they realized how good she was at singing. Thank goodness. Lol

    You're so right about the value of relationships.
    They are a garden that we must "tend to". If we don't tend to them, those gardens can become dry/barren.
    If we tend to our relationships, ,they can continue to remain healthy/beautiful. I lost an important relationship, because I didn't "tend to" it.
    We can't take them for granted.

    When you listen to her in this particular song you hear what she is saying. I have bipolar disorder and I know what depression sounds like. What an Angel who did not know how perfect she was...

    Karen Carpenter was a singer whose voice could stop you in your tracks, but her real passion was drumming. if you want to see her truly in her element as a drummer, check out her 1976 drum solo video: th-cam.com/video/ie1WWWOxhMs/w-d-xo.html

    Frank Sinatra once said that the only singer he'd pay to see was Karen Carpenter. As far as being the best female vocalist ever, in the popular music world she's at the top with Patsy Cline and Alison Krauss in my book. All three of them are other wordly singers.
