I got my GEMs and Bacons from Brokaw in Ventura in that same size on Dusa back in 2021.
Brokaw had these planting instructions written on their website.
They're beautiful trees and are handling the heatwave well.
I've added 3 Reeds to my collection this year, so looking forward to a future with year round avocados 😋🥑

That's pretty much how i've been doing it too. I just raised it a couple inches and I don't use a lot of product or amend the soil all that much these days.

Excellent video, does anyone know where I can acquire one of these clonal Brokaw trees?

Thank you for sharing this knowledge. I tried growing seedling and then grafting a fruit bearing variety but it got burned due to watering method / quality … I didn’t keep up with flooding method. What is recommended place to buy clonal trees for inland so cal planting?

Notice he says that the hole should be at least twice as wide as the diameter of the pot/bag. If you want a big tree commit to taking care of a much wider area as early as possible in the project, especially in clay souls.

Hi Greg, I am from the Philippines, do you know nurseries from USA who imports avocado seedlings for planting aside from Brokaw Nurseries? Have a nice day!

Thanks for posting, but this planting was done in ideal soil. Not much is learned when things are done in ideal situations. And how many of us have ideal environments. Had he planted the tree the way he did in compacted clay soil, the tree would not do well or even die. There is also lack of clarity on watering, where the lady states that you have to be careful about over watering. Over watering in good soil is NOT a problem. Over watering in poorly drain soil with root rot agents like phytophthora cinnamomi and/or soil mixed with organics is a problem. If over watering in by itself is a problem, then how does an avocado seed develops roots and sprouts without any issue in a glass of water. If the plant is in well-drained soil, then it should be drenched with a good amount of water every so often to leech away the salt. If the water has very little or no salt, then no need to do so.
I do agree that not disturbing the roots when planting is important as avocado roots are very sensitive. But what if the roots are terribly bounded. Ideally the tree in that situation should not be planted. But if you want to plant it, then the bounded roots need to be removed. The tree then needs to be placed in a disease-free well drained soil away from any harsh environment, watered with good water and hopefully it recovers from the shock.
Avocado trees are one of the toughest to grow. Sure there are people who planted the tree, walked away, and the tree produced a good crop yearly. But there also plenty of well-intention people who killed their tree when planting. If time permit, I will post a complete guide on planting avocado trees, even in non-ideal conditions.

    Good irrigation is Biblical:
_For he shall be as a tree planted by the waters, and that spreadeth out her roots by the river, and shall not see when heat cometh, but her leaf shall be green; and shall not be careful in the year of drought, neither shall cease from yielding fruit._ - Jeremiah 17:8
The verse is actually about the Believer planting themselves by the source of water, the Word of God, so that when tough times come, and they will, that well-watered one will continue to produce plenty of new tender leaves and good fruit even when others not so well situated wither and fail.
By the way, you can thank God for Israel and the Jewish people because it was the Jews who invented drip irrigation. I'm in the middle of a miserable heatwave here in Bakersfield this week - up to 114°F - but because of drip irrigation on my avocado trees, I have new tender leaves and beautiful fruit forming. Last year I was still hand watering and my trees AND myself were not so happy, LOL 🥵
