    At last I know what the inspiration behind StarControl II was. The spinning globe view, the planet survey, landing, harvesting etc. The smooth wireframe transition from space to planet surface here is way ahead of its time.
    A 3-level of zoom local map, plus a full planetary map of locations to explore. Astounding for its time.

    My favorite game of all time. No it doesn't hold up over time. But when I was 13 playing this, it seemed limitless and infinite. I bought it at b. dalton bookstore in 86 or 87 on a whim, and never regretted it. It was so much fun.

      Definitely. Starflight captured my imagination more than any other game (Sid Meier's Pirates! being perhaps a distant second). The game play and the story line just draw you in and make you part of its universe.
      My best friend and I played this so much that summer -- '87 sounds right -- I thought his mother was going to take us to counseling. They had no AC and their house was a heat trap, but we happily endured many hours and days of exploring, mining, and tempting the Uhlek in 100F temperatures.
      We'd shut down at maybe 2am and throw sleeping bags out on the deck. My mind would be racing as I watched the night sky and wondered what could be happening out there. We'd even dream about it. Once I woke up to my friend yelling in his sleep to "get back in the damned ship". His mother may have been right.
      Even now it's still fun to look up at night and wonder where Arth is, or to see Orion's belt and pretend it's the Staff Constellation. No other computer game has left that kind of impression on me.

    I remember this game. It was so hardcore it formatted your floppydisk when you died (you were told to play on a copy, only). So while you could take breaks it would only have one 'save slot' and then...permadeath. To get any kind of 'savegame slots' you basically had to make a copy of your copy every now and then.

    This game is still unsurpassed. Modern game developers try to create the thrill of open-ended space exploration using procedural generation, but, in reality, this just results in a universe where all your choices are arbitrary. Any star system you visit, any landing site you choose, will simply show you a different combination of the same stock elements until you eventually become bored by the repetition. There's a degree of novelty, but nothing to truly *discover*. Hence, the focus shifts from exploration to base building, fleet construction, etc.
    Starflight was filed with unique elements, many of which (e.g., the Mysterion message) had nothing to do with the main storyline. The game developers simply wanted to keep you wondering. They wanted you to feel that, even after you'd "won" the game, there remained deeper mysteries still to be uncovered.
    As a side note, I was recently trying out Spacebourne 2, and while it appears to suffer from the aforementioned limitations of procedural space exploration, I was elated to discover that your home planet is named "Arth."

    • @DEP717
      @DEP717 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Agreed, the little things you found, messages, comments on the history, were amazing. From the profound to the hilarious.
      In many ways, a game that still rings deep, against even today's titles. The deal of the storyline was amazing.

    Not sure if you people know this, I did it. You could go and edit the executable file and change the hard coded parameters, such as the prices, starting money, etc. and just save it. I gave myself lots of initial money, reduced the parameters for training, etc. The only thing you had to watch out for was not changing the length of the hard coded string, else all the addressing locations change. So you wouldn't go change a 99 to a 999.

      I think it was Starglider 2 by Argonaut Games, one of the first games to feature 3D filled in vector graphics with curves !. If it's not that game then it could me Damocles (mercenary 2) by Novagen. Then I think there was Elite 2 or was it Elite 3 that allowed you to land on planets maybe I cannot remember.
