My WHY: To improve my quality of life and to be able to live life to it's fullest!! There is so much life to live and I don't want to miss a second of it.
I want to be active and able with my kids, but also I want to break cycles; I’ve struggled with my identity recently as I can remember being my kids ages and remember what my parents were like at this age and as depressing as it sounds I think I’d kind of subconsciously formed the opinion that it’s all downhill from here! 😂 but of course that doesn’t have to be the case. I do have some health things that I have limited control over but I’m not completely helpless, there are definitely plenty of positive changes I can make. And I want to Feel good! I want to feel energised, confident and attractive and be a positive role model and really be present and able to enjoy my life! 💚
Important: dont just take supplements because an influencer tells you they are “amazing”. Consult with your doctor first. The only thing they almost always recommend is a vitamin D supplement. If you don’t actually need the thing you are taking as a supplement, it just becomes more that your liver and kidneys have to filter out which can lead to damage. (Sorry, English is not my native language) I am so glad to hear you are doing better Melanie! your words influence a lot of people, I would advice some caution for them as well
100% this! definitely consult a dr first before taking supplements unnecessary as they can cause damage if you get too much of them. The body can only cope with a certain amount of each if you go over you can cause permanent damage as it will start to struggle to use them up and filter them out. So definitely see your dr first and get your bloods tested to see what your out of and listen to what your dr recommends. don't just start taking them without advice from a medical professional!
Agh thank you so so much! And omg absolutely! Hopefully people have common sense. Sharing what you're doing isn't the same thing as prescribing what others should do. Sharing what certain vitamins and minerals are important for doesn't mean everyone needs to supplement! I hope the fact that I'm talking about how Pregabalin helped my anxiety and medication doesn't mean people take that as me telling them they should go ask their doctors for Pregabalin lol
Yes I love Mel but I flinched when she said you will pee out excess supplements. This is not true of all supplements. Excess vitamin D can be toxic. Too much calcium can cause constipation and even worsen heart arrhythmias. I have had many patients who had toxic vitamin D levels. Please speak to a registered dietician, physician, or APP. If you’re eating a balanced diet and don’t have a medical problem that affects absorption(eg bariatric surgery) , you don’t need a million supplements. A multivitamin or prenatal will have everything you need
@@melaniemurphyofficial no, people do not have common sense, we all know this, and we know that people will religiously follow what their youtubers and influencers will say they are doing because they want what they have found, products or mindset. that's why brands support them because they know this. please be more mindful in what you are just oh so lightheartedly putting out there, because what you are saying does in fact come across as gospel, it's your whole vibe.
@@kcltube3 I'm not responsible for what anyone else does. If your favourite influencer talks about taking Coke on nights out, are they responsible if you stupidly decide to blindly copy them? Don't be absurd. My following is made up of people in their late 20s and their 30s who are well capable of thinking for themselves. My 'whole vibe' is sharing my life...not in prescribing.
Oh Melanie this might be my all-time favourite video you have ever made. You are making changes that will help you for the rest of your life and generationally for your babies too. You deserve all this goodness and so much more ❤
Honestly Mel you give me hope that I will survive this part of my life, and even thrive! Two young kids, a big house move/reno, illness both mentally and physically. You are a wonderful woman thank you so much for being so raw and honest x
The past couple of years have presented me with THE MOST CHALLENGES I've EVER faced and I truly at times thought it was too much for me and I'd just collapse and never get back up...nobody can understand how hard it is to juggle a home reno with pregnancies kids working mental/physical struggles unless they've been through it...and while I absolutely hate to hear that you're struggling SO much, it is in a way nice to know I'm not alone in finding this life stage A LOT. There's this bullshit pressure to appear like nothing phases you as a mother. Like, no...it's been a really hard stage, but I do feel like I'm coming out the other end of a tunnel of sorts and the light is SO BRIGHT so YOU LOOK AFTER YOURSELF AND I FULLY BELIEVE YOU'LL MAKE IT HERE TOO! Huge hugs xxx
Please consult a nutritionist or dietitian if you are thinking about supplements. There is potential for harm; “you excrete everything you don’t need” - this is not true for fat soluble vitamins. However, it is true that many are deficient in various nutrients eg vitamin D. Best advice is to get levels checked first and then decide on supplementation.
Great video. I had CFS after glandular fever in the 1990s. After a few years I was able to very gradually build up my mind and body again to about 90/95% of previous health. Timing is very individual,, it took me about 7 years. I learnt patience and compassion for self and others. It is not an easy parh. I am so glad you have made progress recently
Absolutely incredible to hear that you came through it! What a long oul' road! If I kept going at the rate I was going...working evenings after minding kids all day, eating rubbish that wasn't helping my body to function in the face of a constant stream of bugs coming into the house via my son's preschool, not giving my body/mind what they need...I fully believe I'd have ended up bed bound. I've never felt fatigue like what was coming in waves since last year and it got so much worse after Covid, I had a week or two where I was horizontal constantly and just so out of it from lack of sleep, I had such fatigue but also SUCH terrible insomnia. Patience and compassion are vital. And acceptance of symptoms, of where we're at in any one moment instead of fighting against it xxx
Yes, would love some vlogs seeing all of this in practise!! So glad to hear you’re feeling so much better Melanie 💚 Notes for myself on things you mentioned that I’d like to try: Wim Hof breathwork (see TH-cam), at least 60 seconds cold shower every day ideally in the morning, touching your bare feet to the earth 20 mins a day, praying in the evening before getting into bed, no phone in bed - instead do reading and visualisation of positive future experiences you want to have
I was going through a rough patch around the same time as you. I started getting really bad joint pain early this year and I've struggling with chronic fatigue for years. I was diagnosed with an autoimmune disorder called ankylosing spondylitis. I have been watching your wellness videos and I really relate to them. Like you, I have been trying tackle this disease holistically by cutting out ultra-processed foods, reducing stress/anxiety as much as possible, therapy, exercise, and finding things that make me happy. Since doing all of these things, I haven't had a flare up in months and the fatigue/brain fog I have had is almost completely gone. I believe that highly processed foods is what caused my autoimmune disorder and I am so glad you are sharing your story and spreading the word of it's negative effects. Also, you are absolutely glowing and I can tell this new lifestyle is helping you tremendously!
Thanks for mentioning that you support your local small farms! I'm a farmer and I believe local nutritious food can heal. I know we have to charge more than the grocery store but if people can afford it it's so worth it! 🌱
I never comment on TH-cam videos but I just have to let you know this. I have been researching nervous system regulation for a couple of years now for my own health, spoken to practitioners and paid for masterclasses but never has it really sunk in for me like this video. I’ve already heard about all of the things you’ve spoken about but not like this. You have a real knack for teaching topics in a real tangible way 😊 I’ve watched your videos since you started too so I can see this stuff is really helping you. Well done Mel and wishing you the best on your healing journey. I really hope you continue to make videos about it 💚
🥹🥹🥹❤️🔥 this is SUCH sweet and encouraging feedback! I love that about TH-cam…learning things in a really relaxed way. I have researched like crazy in recent months - books, podcasts, speaking with others with the same symptoms! A recent thing I have learned is that breathing pattern disorder is a core component of long covid for many people so I have introduced a few types of breath work and as much relaxing activities as I can to try get my body used to diaphragmatic breathing, so conscious of how scrolling online makes me hold my breath so been on my phone way less! I am in the middle of a very long stint of my nerve sensations being either 1/10 or not noticeable 🥹🥹💖
In the process of doing this myself. My year of healing. I find your voice so soothing. Thank you for this video! So far working a treat for me to overcome perimenopause weight gain, chronic mold exposure and anxiety, depression, PMDD, adeno, chronic fatigue etc is - whole food diet (loads of protein from animal products, ditching the processed food), taking a few drops of liquid iodine a day in water, using Anna’s wild yam cream daily until my bleed, grounding and sun daily, sleeping in a separate room to hubby (the sleep deprivation from snoring etc is real!), stopping alcohol, a coffee only after food later in the day, moving by walking and weights at home (I hate gyms and we have a great set up in the garage where I can keep an eye on the kids). Prayer. I think everyone healing needs to understand it’s adding one thing in or taking one thing out every week. (Ask yourself is this hindering or helping me be my best self?) Slowly, but surely. It’s not one thing. We are complex humans and need looking after. If I can come back from this you can too. Just prioritize you! Your family needs you xxx
Please learn more about neurodiversity before speaking any further about it. Lesson one: we avoid using functioning labels. For those who get labelled "high functioning", it minimises the challenges that we face and can contribute to low self-worth. For those who get labelled "low-functioning", it lowers people's expectations of what is possible for them, which in turn limits their options for life as a whole. (That's the short version) If you'd like to learn more about ADHD, I'd recommend the How to ADHD TH-cam channel. For more on neurodivergence in women, I'd recommend The Neurodivergent Women Podcast, where internalised and masked presentations of neurodivergence are discussed.
Came here to say this - there are many benefits to knowing you have adhd that don’t involve medication. High functioning is not a thing! We all have different challenges :)
She’s literally telling about what her therapist told her. “Please learn more about neurodiversity before speaking on it” is so wild to say when someone is literally talking about how they themselves are neurodivergent. just because someone doesn’t have the “right” vocab doesn’t mean they shouldn’t speak about their own personal experience
@@liamillar2132 okay I wasn’t rude and I was being helpful about the messaging as it came across as misinformation. I know she didn’t mean it like that and maybe her therapist isn’t well informed. The right vocab is important as someone someone who is stigmatised by incorrect messaging around adhd and autism
A personal preference, but I find the clips used as an example of you doing something are too short. It's a flash and then back to you sitting talking. But it's those clips that make the video. I'd like them longer with just the talking over the top. But still another great video! Showing your daily life is always the best. They're the most relatable and sometimes a good example of what could have been.
I love hippie Melanie😂💚 I’ve been watching your videos since 2016 and you have MASSIVELY helped me with my health and body image issues through my 20s. I am now 27 and you continue to help me as you grow and learn and share🌿✨
I have followed you for years, your evolution is admirable, I am forever in awe of you! I have sooo much love and respect for the love you just pour into everything you do. It truly inspires me, you’re so informative, caring, loving, hippy and I’m ALLLLL here for it! Thank you thank you, I adore that you’re similar in my age and it makes me feel all well and good there are others out there wanting and yearning for this hippy life we all clearly need and benefit soooo much from 💜 thank you for sharing, and for you being YOU!! 💚 xxxx
I do something similar to the therapeutic exercise at the dentists. When I am in pain or uncomfortable, I will remind myself that this will all be over soon, and the results will be worth it. I imagine myself with a happier, healthier smile. ✨️
I've watched you for years and rarely comment. I wanted to tell you how much these types of videos mean to me! I've got endo and it just wrecks me, but this kind of wellness journey really gives me hope. It's so refreshing that you really emphasize listening to your body!!!
Mel, you have made me take my health so much more seriously. I have a small child and we both need me well. I do much of what you talk about but it's so expensive. I can just about manage but most people can’t and that's rough.
I know it’s not a convincing argument for everyone because everyone is still relative and genetics play a role too, but just think about how you will save money by eating well in the long run. You will not need to buy medicine, pay for surgeries, hospital stays etc. Health is wealth and sickness can become goddamn expensive. I see it as an investment, just like all money-based investments that exist out there :) Also taking care of your body physically, movement, mobility and all that stuff will help tremendously in your future health costs.
i find the point you made about not trying to do too much all at once is really relatable. adhd aside, im really bad with procrastination and this constant awareness that im procrastinating while im doing it, but couldnt help myself. that was until i started to gently make myself focus on one task at a time. instead of listing 20 odd tasks/errands i need to do today, ill choose 3 priority tasks; one thats necessary (could be making a phonecall or paying a bill), one thats going to make me physically move (maybe like watering my plants or letting my cats out on the roof), and then one being something thats fun/brain engaging (like drawing or writing up in my diary). after about 6 months of doing this ive found that im generally alot more productive and calm simultaneously. i go about it with the attitude that if ive gotten those three tasks done, then ive accomplished something today and i can pat myself on the back for that.
I have a relative low stress life, and I’ve been fortunate to have eaten healthy and been active since I was a kid. Even so, I’d love to start implementing a few more of these things. Specifically things that feel indulgent but are actually ways to treat yourself nicely. 😌
So happy for you that things have improved so much - you're doing great 💜. As a fellow mum of two tinies with very limited childcare or help I find the time barrier to me implementing any of the things I know I need to is a huge barrier, but every day I'm working through the sleep deprivation and constant colds towards this goal - inching closer bit by bit 🙏. I loved your reminder to slow down - wtf are we rushing for when this is life! Yet I am totally guilty of that rushing, stress and panic about how little I'm achieving from my to-do list *all* the time 😂. I would love a weekly wellness 2.0 style vlog in which you show us how you actually live like this with your childcare and work responsibilities - it would be really motivating and inspiring for a lot of other parents x
Would love this sort of thing for those of us out here who have almost naught to work with financially. Of course there is plenty you talk about that I have incorporated into my life that doesn't cost anything but my own energy. And I'd LOVE to see a monthly vlog seeing these things in practice to have a better idea of what or would not likely benefit me.
So glad you've found things that make you feel better Mel 💚 it's hard to watch this kind of video for me as a lot of these things are things I have tried for my chronic illness, or worse, people have suggested like they have all the answers to cure me. There is a certain amount of health privilege in being able to do these things and in having them work. I'm also a tad more skeptical of the science behind some of it. Still very happy you are doing well and glad you are showcasing real self care, as I think being in touch with our nervous systems can save people from illness in this hustle culture dominated world.
I feel exactly the same way. I've been bedbound 3 years now with severe long COVID and no amount of healthy eating and wellness stuff makes any difference. Some are just lucky to only get post viral fatigue syndrome from covid, which resolves by itself within a year anyway. Those of us who are unlucky end up with ME/CFS
For everyone watching this video who also has long covid, its important to remember that luck play far more of a role in recovery from long covid than any of these wellness activities. For example, breathing exercises may help, but it helps the way it would help a health person, it's not going to fix your chronic illness. Try them by all means, you might find something that helps your symptoms but if it isn't a cure all, that is not your fault.Trying these things can give a sense of hope and can feel like you're doing something and that can be hugely psychologically important xxx
I need to take care of myself more than I do. I'm wrecked at the end of the day and just want to veg. I do want to at least get a 15-30 min walk in to get me started so that I can chase my little boy around without being out of breath after seconds! I wish I could do everything you suggested, and hopefully with time I will be able to. One step at a time 😊❤ Thanks for sharing, Melanie! Love your videos
Love this for you!!✨✨ health is truly wealth, especially in an age that wants to steal it from you! Knowing that there is an all-wise, loving force that you can speak to, show gratitude to, & ask for help is also priceless. All the best to you & family 🤗
I would love it if you made the odd weekly vlog focusing on this approach to your wellness! This has been one of my favorite videos you have ever made! Super inspiring and helpful. I am recovering from me/cfs which I have had for 10+ years, and I am nearly well-my goal is to fully recover this year. Going to try out some of your habits with self talk. That book on manifesting is not yet available in the U.S., I hope it is released here soon! Super happy for you that you are doing so well and this video will help so many people. Slainte!
Wow Melanie, this video has literally made me want to make changes to my life. I feel like it’s a bit of a wake up call actually as a lot of what you said about the things you were doing I can absoloutely relate to. Im so glad you have found a path to help you with all these different things ❤ Your kids must be so proud of you. You’re amazing x
I wish I could change my financial situation but oh Melanie there is so much. Not all of it is in my control. And that is truly maddening. ❤ I wish my MCAS would go away with this type of stuff. 😢 I can't fix myself on a cellular level. Would that we all could. Oh I do not like the label high functioning...it comes from ableist people praising us for "seeming so normal." I appreciate you making this video though.
I know it's not possible to change one's financial situation overnight, trust me! It took me a long time and I spent many years with just state support and studying on the back to education allowance, counting my pennies. I've seen people age 40 with nothing make it to 50 with a million in the bank from very tiny amounts of money they invested (they learned how to do it through reading and online videos)...there's NO way to predict the future, none of us can, though I personally believe that assuming it's going to be bad / that you'll always struggle with money is a surefire way to tune out any and all opportunities that may present themselves in your surroundings over the years
@melaniemurphyofficial thank you for not taking my comment as a mean thing. You're a sweet lady. I am American. That probably explains everything right there. Our system is so beyond broken. And there's too much nuance for my own situation and so vastly different from yours. Truly I am so happy for you that you found a way out and get to have a happy life. It's beautiful to watch. I wish we could talk haha it would make this whole explanation easier. Why are you so sweet 😭❤️
Just a gentle reminder that ADHD and autism are not a spectrum in the traditional sense of everyone is on a line. It means those who are diagnosed, will vary in how much they individually experience each symptom (e.g., some may have high sensory struggles, others may have low, some might have medium levels of communication struggles, while others with very little). I also think it's important to distinguish between multitasking and habit stacking, which can help people move from one task to another, which can be a challenge for some ADHD folks (I'm diagnosed with both ADHD and autism, each of my parents gave me one of them, I have both a psychiatrist and a therapist, and I'm six months from finishing a PhD in psychology, so I've read a lot of books and know how to read research, I know things!! 😆). Otherwise, I love this video so much, it comes at the perfect time and either I'm already doing some of your recs or I'm keen to add them to my life! 🤍
I'll admit I know VERY little about these things! But I'd really like to learn more about it as knowing more about it might improve my day to day life a lot more than I know!
@@melaniemurphyofficial for sure!! I love inserting myself into situations to kindly and gently explain something from a more neurodiverse lens, because this area of research is rapidly changing/evolving and (for valid reasons) can be hard/time consuming for most people to keep up with! Like a lot of other ND individuals, knowing stuff about ADHD and autism is my special interest, so I am all over it and I like to share it (respectfully ofc) with others, to make the world a better place 😇
Melanie, thank you for this video. I first found you years ago when you were starting your weight lifting journey. You inspired me so much then to get myself healthy and active. I’m a mum too and the same age as you and you are inspiring me all over again to prioritize my health ( mental, emotional, physical). I like your holistic approach, it resonates. I just want to feel good and play and be around for my family. Anyway, thanks again!
Desipite the hype with Himalayan pink salt, you'd need to consume 5 times the recommended daily sodium limit to see any benefits for minerals. Best to go with an iodized sea salt as iodine is a nutrient of focus, especially for fertility and breastfeeding 👌
Thanks so much for sharing this info with us. I've been personally struggling with my mental health and body image for years now and i feel like i need to change my life style to ensure i live a happier life ❤
So happy to see you doing well! I always feel like we’re in similar headspaces because half the time when you post something I’m doing the same thing! I’ve been head first into my wellness routine this last month and the video where you told us about your recent sickness and reading ultra-processed people, I had just finished reading it too! I love following along with your videos because it helps me to have such a compassionate voice to hear for my own self talk ❤ I hope to be as good a mother as you when I have (foster) kiddos.
I understand the panic attacks with not being able to do 'normal' things. I went into kidney failure when I was pregnant with my baby and when she was 4 weeks old, I couldn't pick her up. It upset me so much. She was premature and so teeny and I couldn't lift her. It mentally was awful, mainly because of the guilt. I had a difficult 9 months of dialysis and transplant and recovery. Thankfully I'm so healthy now and I see her running around and I can pick her up and throw her around and she just laughs laughs. That laugh, is my reason. Her smiles are my reason. Me being able to bath her and sooth her and seeing her thrive is my reason. Meditation and deep breathing was and is still amazing for me. I still feel guilty when I think about last year but I try to be present to enjoy today and so can enjoy tomorrow. Also, I bought your second fiction book and am loving it so far!
Thank you for this amazing video. I've also been struggling with health for the last year, and this was so incredibly helpful (like somebody supporting you quietly from the side). Your health journey has been a motivation and inspiration. I wish you all the best!! also!! weekly videos would be amazing
❤ came to Dublin for the taylor swift concert last week and havebeen thinkin of you! It is amazig how your videos neverfail me to inspire me and make me discover new things!!! A big hug from Naples, Italy, Delighted to see you recover so well from the health scare you had !
I'm late, but I still wanted to contribute. I commented on another video regarding my experience with COVID which created inflammation in my nervous system. At that time I was fine and I thought I was out of the woods. Unfortunately, I had a miscarriage which of course saddened me deeply. I tried to return to work after two weeks, but my performance was not what it was before, which created a tense atmosphere between my superior and me. At some point everything broke down at work and the next day I was panicking at the thought of going back, which deeply irritated my nervous system....and the symptoms returned: burning, numbness, tingling, anxiety, palpitation. It was less intense than during COVID, but the fear that inhabited me at the idea of it coming back had me pinned. That's when I understood to what extent this virus leaves its mark and how respecting oneself, one's limits and one's rhythm is essential in order not to get stuck in a loop. On a more positive note, things are going well again. I really hope it stays like this for a long time.
While i strongly believe in using medically researched practices to help yourself. I totall agree health is a holistic thing that needs a multifaceted approach ❤
Hi Melanie, Love your videos! I’m so glad you have found a way of eating and a life style that makes you feel great! I am a registered dietitian and I just wanted to note one thing. Unfortunately your body will not excrete out all supplementation taken in excess. Some vitamins/minerals can build up in the system and cause toxicity. This is actually a common reason young adults (20-35) are admitted to hospital emergency rooms. It’s best take supplements which are prescribed by a GP or other HCP, or for deficiencies that have been confirmed by a blood test or other test. Lots of love 💕
Love this!! Ditto on health issues leading to a massive improvement in my approach to my health and body. I love these and look forward to any and all other videos you do on this topic!
I find your videos about this subject so comforting and inspiring. I'm recovering from burnout and cptsd and find it hard to stick to healthy habits. I'm currently waiting on a rebounder trampoline to be delivered as I've watched some great TH-cam videos about it's many health benefits. One of them is helping with that 'sticky' post viral blood. You might be interested in learning more about rebounding too. Plus it just looks fun and a way to be more childlike again 😊
Loved this video Melanie very inspiring just a note of caution on B vitamins I had a Dutch test and was put on Pure encapsulations B complex for a while because my B6 results were not optional .However my nutritionist is now tapering me off because b6 can cause nerve tingling if used for too long. Just be careful with the B complex. You look great and I'm glad you are feeling better.xx
again, someone else commenting on the mis/sketchy info on this vlog, thank you, please people don't listen to this as gospel! because I can tell many are.
Oh, and WHY I want to work on my health is to maintain good mental health, and be able to spend time and energy with my kids ❤ Also: you say you do "alternative" things, but they aren't really that alternative - most of what you do has been backed by science 😊
I would love to see weekly vlogs! I am also dealing with similar symptoms and pains and have been moving towards a more holistic approach to heal. Of course I still see and doctor and rheumatologist, however, I found this vlog to be very helpful ❤ Thank you for sharing!
I like how you tie a lot of the alterjative approach to the scientific method. I am very "no hippie stuff" in my core, but I also suffer from chronic illness, which I know western medicine can do really little about. I wish there was a magic pill, and resent actually taking care of myself, so I love watching you enjoying (or at least accepting) this era of slowing down.
Love watching your videos!! Just a wee note - the use of 'high functioning' and 'low functioning' labels are being phased out cause they're pretty ableist and a way of measuring how much help people with disabilities are entitled to, which is a slippery slope (I know you don't mean anything bad by this though, its been used to describe me too its just important to not perpetuate it) xx
I want to work on my health, in short, to be strong. Yes, I deffo want to get married and have kids, but at 31, working on a 2nd career in education, and no romantic prospects in sight, I know that - whether I have kids biologically or adopt, I'll likely be an older mum. I used to swim and run (casually, but regularly) in high school, and its extraordinary how much strength and energy I've lost over the last dozen years. I want to eat better and actually be excited about it (which is why I've been oogling the meals in your recent health videos). I miss the stamina and even lung capacity I used to have (I love to sing for my own enjoyment, particularly when I clean or go on solo walks, but I cant sing as loud/powerfully as i used to). I've gained weight over the years, sure, but actually since watching your videos over the past decade, I care little about the size of my clothes or number on the scale. I just want to feel strong and powerful, energetic and actually sleep better. I plan to shift careers from nursing to elementary/primary school teacher, and I want to be able to keep up with the little ones - my students and own children. If I lose weight and change how my body looks, hey that's grand. But I really just want to be healthy and strong enough to actually enjoy my life 💚
Some supplimemts have actually made my muscles/ anxiety/, depression worse. Its definitely good to check what you actually need before buying and taking lots of supplements! I didnt realise they could affect you negatively Xx
yup!!! every single person listen to this. ashwagandha which every single tik tok touts and being a mircal medicine is bad for bipolar disorder and can exacerbate anxiety for instance, which it does for many and people just keep thinking they are having more anxiety when it was oh that natural medicine you bought from the health food store.
Super interesting. Really appreciate you sharing, I value you also pitch it as a holistic approach yourself and your ‘why’ is a helpful angle :) wishing you well!!!!
Loved this video!! I am really trying to get my health back as I have chronic fatigue syndrome from being in high stress for too long. I am finding it really hard so definitely going to incorporate these tips.
Melanie- I love your videos... love seeing how you've made lifestyle changes since your health scare months back! I've been watching you for years now. I watched your video on your health scare, because I am currently dealing with my own health scare, just in a different context. While at State Police academy this summer, after being 5 weeks in, I got hit with Shingles! I am 36 years old, so not much older than you, and boy oh boy- this changed my life. The only confusing part is that I am very healthy, physically fit, and was so healthy going into academy. It was the stress of academy, lack of sleep, nutritional deficit, and being pushed to my absolute limits that lowered my immunity into this shockingly downward spiral... and let me tell you, it is the WORST thing I have ever experienced health-wise in my entire life. The symptoms you mentioned in your health scare video are somewhat similar, but also strikingly different. It's all nerve endings. The virus got into my eye as well- so I am still dealing with complications with that and I am 3 weeks out. The rash broke out on the left side of my face but has cleared up nicely. You can't even tell I had Shingles, which is wonderful, as I take my skincare very seriously- however, I am being followed very closely by Ophthalmology. I never took my health for granted, but this hit me really hard... I can't wait to look back on this as a very distant memory! So I can definitely relate to how you felt months back- hopefully you won't ever get hit with Shingles, as I would not wish this on my worst enemy- but as we get older, our bodies handle stress differently. Never would have expected this in a million years! Now I am dealing with not being able to sleep at night due to the constant itch of my nerves- feels like bugs crawling underneath your skin and you can't itch it hard enough because its nerve endings repairing themselves... on my face and scalp! Omg, is it awful! That and the pain that comes and goes from the nerves firing. I have to take 2 Benadryl just to sleep at night, and I still wake up itching- then have to ice the areas that are itchy. Anyway- so happy to see you in a better light, and I look forward to your content. I pray this ends for me soon so I can start living again! ...
Ultimately, i want to be a happy, healthy, present wife/mother/daughter/friend/person, and that means me taking my health seriously, taking my mental health seriously. I never had any real support when i was growing up, i grew up in a "there are bigger problems, just get on with it" household. So thats what i did, for years. The first thing i've done, and this is huge for me, is to tell my husband and friends when i'm having a low day.
Thank you for this video. It reminded me of some really importat things, that kind of went in the background for a while. We'll be trying hello fresh this week for the first time as well. Very excited! Greetings from germany xx
For me, I'm pretty happy with my health and lifestyle, food wise I think I do pretty well (probs abit too many treats) and I have to do a big hill walk everyday to the bus stop which basically takes care of exercise. Since moving back to Brisbane (Aus) I couldnt be happier with my new house and backyard for the nature aspect 🙂 But before having my daughter I was doing yoga almost everyday. Right now I'm striving (and failing lol) to do it once a week. Seeing your two little beans together makes me even more So so keen for my second baby (just ttc now). Yoga was a big part of my previous ttc and pregnancy journey so it feels...necessary to be at least a small part of my next one.
Earlier this year in like February/March I saw a therapist and she diagnosed me with General Anxiety Disorder as well as a negativistic outlook on life, cuz i struggle a lot to be more positive. And another friend who took a psychology major also thought I might have ADHD cuz I've told her before how hard it is for me to stay focused on things, and how I always multitask. But I don't wanna believe it yet cuz this friend of mine doesn't work as a therapist yet. Besides, everyone multitasks a lot and get distracted often too, and for now I'm saying me watching videos and listening to songs at the same time while working because of lack of stimulus is just my anxiety acting up.
This is soooo helpful! Will def look ibto my bloodwork and vits and minerals - hit a major burnout after 11years of doing it all... It's been three months of trying to get back to balance, and I feel a bit scared to get back to work, but maybe trying some of these things will get me get back into it ❤ Thank you, and sooo happy for you - you look so happy 😍❤️
I would looove a weekly vlog!!! To see how you put this all in action. You’ve inspired me, I order the UPF book and am taking a nice shower and making a cup of tea. I have 80 pounds to lose and I think this stress minimizing approach will be wonderful for my highly sensitive nature. So easy to get caught up in a go go go lifestyle and not take care of myself…
One thing about breathwork: I used to try the WimHof method, but it gave me mad anxiety. It was horrific! I have since learned that there are breathwork exercises that activate the sympathetic nervous system, and those that activate the parasympathetic nervous system!!! So, for now, I stick to those that give me a more calming feeling!!!
wimhof is sketchy af, not a cure-all, not a guru to follow, not magic, and often not good for nerve disorders because it can damage the nerves further to be exposed to extreme temps that it doesn't have the circulation to regulate.
Beautiful video Mel. Thank you for sharing! I love that you pray in the evening - I do too and it’s really changed my life around. Especially reflecting on what happened that day makes you just more present in the actual day and has helped me be a better version of myself. I have a hard time with manifestation - maybe you have some advice. As someone who has worked really hard to stay in the here and now and not live in some maybe future I don’t know how visualisation would work for me. I don’t want to keep obsessing about a possible future and neglect my now self.
For me, it's not really a feeling about obsessing over any particular future outcome but...the way I do it, I essentially just think about my future like it's already happened if that makes sense! Like it's a memory. I don't think about it ALL the time but like, if I'm a passenger in the car or am falling asleep, I like to think about something really fun that I'd like to do and I imagine the people I love/me are all there smiling happy and healthy. Or like...before I wrote my books, I used to look at my book shelf and I'd visualise a pile of books with my name on the spines. I'd imagine the feeling seeing my book in a bookshop. Sprinkling these thoughts throughout my day, I don't feel it takes away from my ability to enjoy the here and now! Though in truth - ENJOYING THE HERE AND NOW is something I've had to work harder for. As my mind naturally wanders a lot. I need to 'practice' mindfulness it certainly doesn't come naturally! xxx
@@melaniemurphyofficial thank you for your answer. Yes that’s true I do that as well, thankfulness. But for example I do long for a relationship in the long term. I know that is what I want. But I dont want to betray my hard earned at easy being with myself if that makes sense. So this is where my daydream always stops short, I can’t think about a potential partner - even though that is what I wish for. And I am doing really well being by myself, I am happy now. But I do know it’s what I wish for my future. Anyway. Thank you, I have been following you since 2015 :)
So interesting that you mentioned not staying in bed longer than 20 minutes if you are struggling to go to sleep. Because it's so true, I do.find myself getting stressed because I can't fall asleep, and I then worry that I'm going to be tired and grumpy the next day (working mum to a 5 year old and 2 year old). I do get out of bed and have a herbal tea and read for 20 minutes and that really does help.
This! Tea and a book that's my go-to as well, in the living room...then when I'm feeling like I'm actually ready for sleep I go back in! I HATED having that negative association with my bed from the insomnia it was really stressful xxx
I ditched the strict eating times too (intermittent fasting) because I just feel better not stressing or thinking into it, and I don't need it for losing weight. I've been trying to focus more on learning how to eat, workout, and even plan around my cycle. The biggest difference for me was to chill out during my luteal phase and listen to my body wanting more carbs. I highly recommend the app 28 Wellness, they're great for daily insights throughout your cycle. It's stuff you can learn through research on your own, (like some of Ray Peat's work, I think he's right about the anti-estrogen carrot salad among many other tips) but it's nicely put together into one app and looks great! I'm so glad you're grounding! One of the most impactful decisions I made in the past year was to ground daily, and be in the sun a lot more. It changed so much for me. I had been what I thought was maybe perpetually anemic since I was like 16/17. I went into an alternative doctor at the time, and after examining my blood, she basically told me I need red meat, grounding, and sunlight. Which I at the time didn't take seriously. Fast-forward to now 28, and ever since I started to do it religiously while also in the sun (and moved away from a moldy house), all of my symptoms are gone. Especially my horrible temperature regulation. I was always cold; strangely cold when I shouldn't have been. Now I regulate temperature perfectly and haven't had issues since. I'm thinking it was my thyroid. I follow a lot of people who swear by health based on light, and the effects of watching the sunrise/sunset, grounding as much as possible, etc. I've done the blue light blocking in the evening for years, but I had no idea how much it can harm our hormonal balance as women to have so much blue light all day. I haven't tried the sunrise/sunset gazing, but if I can get my butt up at 5:30am I'll test it out! 😂 I've also been drinking kefir daily! I bought old organic kefir grains online, and they pump out kefir super quick, plus you can multiply them easily to make big batches. The store bought kind (from what I read about) contains far less healthy bacteria than homemade, so I opted to make it myself. It's so easy to make and saves money! 😄 Also check out Lead Free Mama online, she tests all kinds of kitchenware for lead toxic stuff that can leach into your food. Through her I found Bormioli Rocco (Italian brand, they seem to make everything right there lol), I use their jugs to contain the kefir. Another change I made is daily castor oil packs. They work, I wish I had done it years ago when I first heard about it! Something else I really want to take more seriously is controlling EMF/EMR exposure. It's something that I'm shocked more people don't talk about when we have 5g rolling in everywhere here. There's so much data on it too. In Ireland, is your government pushing for 5g towers everywhere? Thanks for letting us into a slice of your life! I'm trying to make an effort to leave some comments on your channel because it's been a favorite of mine for so many years now 💛
You can get tiny clip on light that fit on top of your book, I have one for my husband when he’s reading but I want to sleep. They’re cheap and super handy
Could you make a video about bedsharing? Your experience, tips, how to get baby to stop needing to nurse constantly to fall asleep. I’m currently bedsharing with 5 month old and husband is bedsharing with our two year old 🙃
I can recommend supplementing mushrooms as well! Reishi is super good for calming down the nervous system, Lions Mane is amazing for gut health and concentration. Chaga has lots of amazing anti inflammatory properties. They have been studied for a while now and a used in Japan for people going through cancer treatment. Definitely recommend looking into them! Just make sure you buy from a good source (not from China), sometimes they used grain to supplement the mushrooms and then it barely contains any mushroom.
My future goal is finishing my PhD in history while juggling being a wife and mom to a baby son. I gotta be on my A game health wise (physical and mental) in order to accomplish this beast of a task!!! 💪💪
I have had days like that...just feeling annoyed that I need to do so much to just feel normal...however then I remember that 'normal' isn't 'normal' on a species level and I'm almost 35! I lived 'normally' for years (just pushing through wave after wave after wave of insanity!) and it makes sense that my body was like ACTUALLY, HEY, UM I HATE THIS SO JUST...STOP? PLEASE LOOK AFTER ME? And now my baseline has shifted and I'm able to expand a little. I'm able to do a bit more each week without any sensation of crashing. I heard someone explain why acceptable of where we are at is THE bedrock of healing and that fighting against the situation and the symptoms can make them worse...that's really clicked for me xxx
Comment your WHY…why you want to work on your health! It’s so important to have that firmly in your mind 💖
MILF
So many whys! To help out my household, to pursue my dreams, to be more athletic again, to help others more (NOT a complete list!).
(Sorry, English is not my native language)
I am so glad to hear you are doing better Melanie! your words influence a lot of people, I would advice some caution for them as well
100% this! definitely consult a dr first before taking supplements unnecessary as they can cause damage if you get too much of them.
Your dad with the tie around his head. An actual icon and legend 😂❤
He's literally SUCH A LEGEND
Would love to see a weekly vlog of this in practice. ❤
I think I'd enjoy making videos like that again it's been so long since I've made vlogs! xxx
Great idea x
❤
Please consult a nutritionist or dietitian if you are thinking about supplements. There is potential for harm; “you excrete everything you don’t need” - this is not true for fat soluble vitamins. However, it is true that many are deficient in various nutrients eg vitamin D. Best advice is to get levels checked first and then decide on supplementation.
100% I get so worried when I hear people say "you wee out what you don't need". It's dangerous in same cases unfortunately.
@@melaniemurphyofficial Thanks for replying. I wish you all the best for the future and with your channel, well done on all you have achieved x
Yes, would love some vlogs seeing all of this in practise!! So glad to hear you’re feeling so much better Melanie 💚
Notes for myself on things you mentioned that I’d like to try: Wim Hof breathwork (see TH-cam), at least 60 seconds cold shower every day ideally in the morning, touching your bare feet to the earth 20 mins a day, praying in the evening before getting into bed, no phone in bed - instead do reading and visualisation of positive future experiences you want to have
I was going through a rough patch around the same time as you.
AGHHH this is SO, SO AMAZING to read...has made my day! Just bloody over the moon for you!
Thanks for mentioning that you support your local small farms! I'm a farmer and I believe local nutritious food can heal. I know we have to charge more than the grocery store but if people can afford it it's so worth it! 🌱
I'm realising HOW important it is to support local when possible!
Absolutely brilliant to hear it!
(That's the short version)
If you'd like to learn more about ADHD, I'd recommend the How to ADHD TH-cam channel.
This is REALLY helpful feedback! xxxxx
@@melaniemurphyofficialI agree with this point. Sometimes being able to watch that it’s possible makes it easier for me to believe I can do it too.
I love hippie Melanie😂💚 I’ve been watching your videos since 2016 and you have MASSIVELY helped me with my health and body image issues through my 20s. I am now 27 and you continue to help me as you grow and learn and share🌿✨
You should see my face reading this...thank you for such a beautiful encouraging comment! xxx
You need Jesus
And not youtube
😭😭😭😭😭😭😭💖
Mel, you have made me take my health so much more seriously. I have a small child and we both need me well. I do much of what you talk about but it's so expensive. I can just about manage but most people can’t and that's rough.
So wonderful to hear that
I know it’s not a convincing argument for everyone because everyone is still relative and genetics play a role too, but just think about how you will save money by eating well in the long run.
I second this
Would love this sort of thing for those of us out here who have almost naught to work with financially. Of course there is plenty you talk about that I have incorporated into my life that doesn't cost anything but my own energy. And I'd LOVE to see a monthly vlog seeing these things in practice to have a better idea of what or would not likely benefit me.
They sell red light reading lights on Amazon, they clip on your book or side table! Great for sleep and a lot less bothersome then having your phone
OOOOHHHH, I will be ordering one today! Thank you! :)
Yeah I get you, totally agree. I've had me/cfs for 8 years now, mostly housebound the last 3. I wish you all the best.
Totally agree, a lot of people totally ignore the red flags their body is sending out. And I 100% acknowledge the privileges I have
I love you Mel. I’m glad you are feeling better and so grateful to have been following you over these years 🥰
I need to take care of myself more than I do. I'm wrecked at the end of the day and just want to veg. I do want to at least get a 15-30 min walk in to get me started so that I can chase my little boy around without being out of breath after seconds!
I wish I could do everything you suggested, and hopefully with time I will be able to.
One step at a time 😊❤
Thanks for sharing, Melanie! Love your videos
So happy you’re finding your health again! Love your approach and I expect that sharing your mindset and process is going to help a lot of people.❤️☺️
You're lovely. I'm glad you're feeling happier and calmer, and grateful that you've shared what works for you
Love this for you!!✨✨ health is truly wealth, especially in an age that wants to steal it from you!
Awh Emma 😭😭💖💖💖💖💖
I wish I could change my financial situation but oh Melanie there is so much. Not all of it is in my control. And that is truly maddening. ❤
I wish my MCAS would go away with this type of stuff.
I work on my health to age gracefully and limit pain and digestive issues!
😭😭😭😭😭😭💖
Thank you for this amazing video. I've also been struggling with health for the last year, and this was so incredibly helpful (like somebody supporting you quietly from the side). Your health journey has been a motivation and inspiration. I wish you all the best!! also!! weekly videos would be amazing
❤ came to Dublin for the taylor swift concert last week and havebeen thinkin of you!
It is amazig how your videos neverfail me to inspire me and make me discover new things!!!
A big hug from Naples, Italy,
Delighted to see you recover so well from the health scare you had !
This has helped me so much Melanie thank you ☺️ you know it’s good advice when you watch the night before, then put into action the next day. 🙌
You are so, SO right and I am SO happy you are doing better! 😭💖
Amazing work! I plan to introduce most of those tips immediately and I bought the book you recommended, Ultra processed people. Time for a change 💗
Lots of love 💕
you're being very kind about this, I cannot believe how many people 'discover' wellness and immediately think they know stuff.
I miss vlogs so much! I would love for you to start them up again!
Love this!! Ditto on health issues leading to a massive improvement in my approach to my health and body. I love these and look forward to any and all other videos you do on this topic!
I loved this sooo much. Your chat is so non judgemental and refreshing, i just love your measured approach of moderation. Love love love 💘
Oh, and WHY I want to work on my health is to maintain good mental health, and be able to spend time and energy with my kids ❤
Also: you say you do "alternative" things, but they aren't really that alternative - most of what you do has been backed by science 😊
100%! SO important! xxx
yup!!! every single person listen to this. ashwagandha which every single tik tok touts and being a mircal medicine is bad for bipolar disorder and can exacerbate anxiety for instance, which it does for many and people just keep thinking they are having more anxiety when it was oh that natural medicine you bought from the health food store.
Your hair is lush!😍😍
You’re so beautiful, inside and out!❤
Can’t wait to watch this once my little one’s asleep ☺️
Super interesting. Really appreciate you sharing, I value you also pitch it as a holistic approach yourself and your ‘why’ is a helpful angle :) wishing you well!!!!
Loved this video!! I am really trying to get my health back as I have chronic fatigue syndrome from being in high stress for too long. I am finding it really hard so definitely going to incorporate these tips.
So glad you’re feeling better Melanie ❤ I’d love to see weekly vlogs!!
I wish you would upload the audio as a podcast so I can listen as I do things. I need this on repeat!
Since moving back to Brisbane (Aus) I couldnt be happier with my new house and backyard for the nature aspect 🙂
But before having my daughter I was doing yoga almost everyday.
Love this, Melanie 😊 I forgot all about yoga with Adrienne, so I'll have to check out her channel again.
So relatable!! Glad you’re feeling so well🎉🎉
I am on a healing journey as well! So grateful for your video. ❤ I relate to it so much.
Omg this came to me at the perfect time! Thank you so so much
I'm so glad you're doing well Melanie! Keep going at it!! You've got this!
I've also been drinking kefir daily!
I'm trying to make an effort to leave some comments on your channel because it's been a favorite of mine for so many years now
💛
You can get tiny clip on light that fit on top of your book, I have one for my husband when he’s reading but I want to sleep. They’re cheap and super handy
Love these videos, you're so inspirational ... keep it up please and help us all
Could you make a video about bedsharing? Your experience, tips, how to get baby to stop needing to nurse constantly to fall asleep. I’m currently bedsharing with 5 month old and husband is bedsharing with our two year old 🙃
Definitely going to implement some of these tips! Thanks Melanie always for your no-bullshit approach :)
I really enjoyed this video and found the information you shared helpful 🙏
Great video! Super informative. We need to live a life that supports our body ❤
Midge is literally your twin, Mel 😅❤
Love watching your videos, it adds joy to my day!❣
I can recommend supplementing mushrooms as well!
I love this content Mel! Please make more wellness videos
Would love a weekly vlog!! ❤
Masterpiece, as always 🥰👏👏👏
I wish Hello Fresh was available in my country and city. Looks so good and convenient!

Would love a weekly vlog!
Research family constelations, there are so many diferent methods of getting rid of baggage that can help even though they sounds weird!
I would love a weekly vlog of your journey 💚
