I got this issue in the mail when it came out, as I did all of them from the 80s. Black & white ads were cheaper to run, which is why there tended to be more of them. Giorgio perfume was absolutely famous, the best selling perfume of the time! Gale used to come into the salon where I worked in Beverly Hills, she was so rich, but very nice. Furs were huge in the 80s, there were always so many ads for them in the fall/winter issues. Thanks so much for the throwback!!
Wonderful! I went to high school from 2001-2005 and fashion/makeup was a lot less fun than what I see here. It was way more conservative, it's like we regressed.
Me too! This was from my senior year in high school. I actually had this exact magazine - it seems like it was only yesterday that I was turning the same pages. Thank you so much for sharing!
Another trip down memory lane for me. I had this issue of Vogue. I was a freshman at the High School of Art & Design in New York City studying fashion illustration. I later went to F.I.T. and collected many, many magazines. So many issues of American Vogue, Harpers Bazaar, Glamour and Mademoiselle that the stacks were reaching my waistline. I had to throw them out which of course I now regret. Great video Cole 🥰
Wow, what a fascinating time and place to be studying fashion! I know the pain of fabulous magazines have been lost along the way - you can't have the foresight (or storage space) to save everything sadly.
i wish I could give u every penny I have to do these videos daily. i am OBSESSED, like truly addicted, I cannot get enough. It's the perfect combo of magazine ASMR and commentary and voice (both of which I love!!!) these videos scratch a very itchy part of my brain lol. I cannot wait for class/work to end so I can go home and watch your videos. truly obsessed. thank u so much cole for the work u put into these videos!!!!!
So cool to look back on these - thanks so much for sharing! I was also curious if you happened to own a Spiegel catalog from fall of 1986? My mother mentioned it recently, and I haven't been able to find it. Thanks again! :-)
You need to check out the amazing Halston documentary narrated by Tavi Gevinson. When Halston did the deal with JC Penny it sank his career. All the fashion people were upset he made his clothes accessible to the masses. An incredible rise and fall.
may or may not have paused this to figure out who the other celebs in that "emba mink" ad were lol, so incase anyone else is curious, it's: robert preston (never seen that man before in my life, but his filmography looks pretty prolific and he won a tony for his starring role in "the music man") , henry winkler, robert wagner, (AKA "you know him. there he is!" guy lmao) and the last one is rock hudson (RIP ❤)

@@ColeChickering it was definitely an amazing time living in NYC and traveling all over the world. I worked as a fashion model for 27 years. First with the Eileen Ford Agency and then when I came back from my first stay in Milano, I switched over to Wilhelmina. My last head sheet with WIlhelmina New York was 1998. Thanks to social media I've kept in touch with many models that I worked with for so many years. That EMBA Mink Ad was 1 of the 100's of ads that I did. I was a Maidenform Woman on the sides of buses in NYC (LOL), Danskins are Not Just for Dancing (Ads, packaging, point of purchase, store window displays) Lots of stuff! Thankful and grateful! Fun to see this! A photographer friend of mine sent this to me after he saw my pic! Good memories for sure!
My mom had some sort of lesser socioeconomic fur coat in the 80s, like beaver or something, some relatively unglamorous animal. She sold it because it was hard to maintain - but then right after that, bam, people started hating fur. Nice to be ahead of a curve
People really did turn on fur, didn't they? One minute you're in, the next minute you're despised. Good for your mother that she didn't get overly invested!
Ah, it's 1983. The extreme close up cover trend is over. Brooke is no longer a disembodied head! So much fur in the 80s. At one point even Sears had a fur vault! The model at 3:35 looks like Gia Carangi, but it can't be her. Her exit from the modeling industry is well documented and she was no longer working by 1983. I'm guessing it's Janice Dickenson. You missed Isabella Rossellini and Lena Horne. My mother used Merle Norman cosmetics. It was so bland. Look at that blah ad! And the 80s had the coolest makeup and so much of it. This brand was the worst. That food looked good to me. It's the wine that turned me off because I remember 80s white wine. 100% it was a bad California white Zindandel. Very popular then. But yeah, good size pour. Giorgio Beverly Hills was a very 80s scent and a very controversial one. It was extremely strong and most people hated it. Some restaurants would not let you in if you were wearing it! That's Robert Wagner at 16:53 with, I am very sure, Belinda Bauer, a super beautiful model/actress who starred in a 1984 TV film called The Sins of Dorian Gray. Her character is an actress whose screen test ages over the decades but she stays young. Lots of fashion. You can find it on YT. This is the end of Halston's career. The J.C. Penny clothes looked good, but it wasn't maintained and the upscale stores dropped his signature line. And his look didn't fit the era that well. Compare to those enormous Claude Montana outfits. I would say 1982 through 1986 were the prime years for the most classic 80s looks. The tropes start to tone down by 1987. Colors get darker, shoulder pads get smaller. But 1983 was the thick of it. Thank you for your commentary!

Thank you for all this insider info! :)
I'm reliving my teenage years through these 80s magazines -I went to high school from 1980 -1985 so these mags were my makeup and fashion bibles ❤

Thank you Emily! You made my day :)
My birthday is 10/27/83 so I had to watch! Thank you for the retrospective.
Coming up soon - happy birthday! And thanks for watching🎈

I don't own that one yet - wish I did!
So nostalgic to see the names of designers and department stores that no longer exist. (B. Altman, Lord & Taylor, I. Magnin, etc...)
Yes! And I think we might be adding JCPenney to that list soon too... RIP
I enjoy watching a magazine flip through after I’ve painted my nails and I’m waiting for them to dry 💅
That's a great idea - thanks for watching!

Oooo thanks for the suggestion!

Ah, thank you!!! I KNEW it was Henry Winkler, even though he's almost unrecognizable in that beard.
Highly recommend checking out Robert Preston in Victor/Victoria!

Hi There
I am the model in the fur ad with Actor Robert Preston.
Wow! What was it like to professionally model at that time?

Kim Alexis, Kelly Emberg and Renee Simonsen…the best!❤
I was a senior in high school ❤
Wow! Was the early 80s a fun time to be a teen??

The Malboro Man's mitt's look like meatballs!
Meaty indeed. Even beef jerky-esque.
The shoe ad is a take on Dali/Surrealism.
the lady on the beige couch is Ines de la Fressange who soon after this became the face of Chanel
She definitely has that Chanel look.
