I think the 866A model though older is also capable of programming some older higher voltage devices that the newer models cannot.

Indeed, I bought the II Plus, but I can't write 21.5V EPROMs with it (only supports up to 18V). Too bad they didn't send me the wrong one :D

@@krisgarrein9632 Wasn't there any mod to boost that voltage up ? Maybe it was for another programmer but I'm pretty sure I read that for the TL866II+

Didn't find it yet bu this other "universal" mod is quite simple yet elegant ! pinside.com/pinball/forum/topic/program-21v-25v-roms-in-lower-voltage-programmers

@@jonas-fr yeah, you just apply the required voltage to the pins that need them ;)

Shame the TL866 didn't work out. I was thinking of getting one myself. I've been researching these Programmers for some time now. I'd like to program ROM chips for older cartridge based consoles and computers. Found a 48 pin Programmer suited to my needs called the "TOP3000 USB universal programmer". Again this comes from China so it's a gamble. I'll be picking one up in January after the Holidays for my next project. I can do a quick video review here on youtube. I haven't had much luck in finding a review in English online.

Usually EVERY optical drive (save those old ones with caddies) can handle small CDs...

Better to get from aliexpress, everything is made in China anyway. Aliexpress had plenty special package. new software update does not support the old model.

My problem are the 'chinses clones'. A recent example I saw as a mini-spot welder. The original one had 6 MOSFETs, the clone only 2. My original TL866 was a clone and didn't work. The replacement was the real article and worked as advertised. Cloned desoldering tips for my FR300 are the same, clones don't work well, ones directly from Hakko US work well.

@@ShadowTronBlog I buy chinesium clones of various devices. I have accepted the trade off of $ = time and time = $. Sure I save a lot on a single device knowing it will need to be reworked or modified in order to get it to work right. My time invested contributes to a deeper understanding of not just the device, but everything related to fixing it. From software, firmware, and crapware to knowing the right things to get on a component level.
I have the MiniPro TL866A and the XGECU equivalent. Both have been good for me.

The company does not support its previous products. They will orphan you in a heartbeat just to sell you another burner. I bought the TL866CS and was orphaned four months later when they dropped all support for it, including dropping it from later revisions of their programming software. So I'm stuck at revision 6.85 forever. Thanks for nothing.

I've had the same issue with every USB programmer I've bought over the years from various manufactures.
