    A phone system device like that very well might have a blank EPROM if it's used to record a greeting. A lot of people don't know this, but EEPROMs can be used to record analog audio in digital answering machines and the like (not always a 1 or 0). I assume it works for EPROMs too.

    surely a static discharge couldn't burn a hole through the device.

    If your into arcade collecting a programmer is a absolute necessity right next to a multimeter.

    • @niceguy60
      @niceguy60 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      OhNoNotMyPenisAt this point most of those suicide boards have fixes to them to reboot them yourself. I have the biggest cps2 collection in the arcade collecting scene and this isn't a issue for me.
      I just recently bought a smartpro 5000u universal programmer, best feature is being able to program my devices directly from the device without needing a PC

    I use one of these daily, a VP-390 which is very similar to your unit. I find them extremely useful and reliable and most importantly for me, USB powered when programming low voltage devices. They're cheap but thanks to what I'm assuming is intelligent design they support 95% of the chips used in automotive applications, anything it doesn't support I have access to a production line with a programmer I can "borrow" for limited periods of time. I've used several other programmers but the Wellon line has one major advantage over the other low-cost "universal" programmers - It has an adjustable VCC in software, which is a boon to the automotive sector as eeproms are often write protected or a pin pulled low by a microcontroller to prevent reading/writing of raw data as a form of obfuscation. Being able to lower the voltage to the point the eeprom just works but the microcontroller doesn't wake up is god damn handy.

    A hole burned in the ARM chip, now that's bricked! Maybe the voltage when flashing it went haywire?

  • @EEVblog
    @EEVblog  12 ปีที่แล้ว

    Correct, they are BAV70's. I missed the silkscreen. So even less flexible than I mentioned!

  • @antoniopetito
    @antoniopetito 12 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    We'll wait and see what he will do. I just assumed it was a hole burnt through the package of the device. You know, when you power an IC with too much voltage with a bit more than average supply of current.. Or it was shorted..

    If they want it back to swap it out, write the ARM CPU on a sticky label and attach it to the CPU.

    ~19:30, Those might be (dual) diodes. They seem to be marked "DDxx" on the silkscreen. Might make sense,as signal steering diodes or something. All of the (other) transistors appear to be marked "Qx". I dunno,the silkscreen is kinda funky in places.

    JTAG most likely. If you have a computer with a parallel port, you can build a simple JTAG adaptor for a few bucks. (7400 series buffer + a few discreets)

    Gotta love it when they try to sand down the part number but do a half-baked job, allowing you to still read the part number!
    I had a cheap-ass Ethernet/USB cable tester, where they sanded down the part number for a damn decade counter. I was able to read the writing after letting a thin coat of rubbing alcohol evaporate.

    • @boogiestreet594

      +Aurelius R Ur right, there is a hole in the plastic casing, probably from them pushing too hard when scraping the code off and puncturing the plastic? Maybe thats why it wasn't working properly

    • @AureliusR
      @AureliusR 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Anthony Quigley No, a blowhole is exactly that: a current spike interally blew a hole out of the casing. I've had it happen before.

    1. Prevent competitors from copying design, 2. Force customers to purchase repair parts from mfgr. 3. Force customers to return equipment to mfgr for repairs. Alternative is labelling parts with unique numbers to hide identity. Motorola is notorious for this.

    Hi Dave, I am a big fan of you
    You actually made a new age of electronics lectures
    You made us love electronics more than ever and seeing it in a different prospect:)
    However, if you need a perfect universal programmer try BK Precision 866B
    It can program at least 43000 device and it is of course updatable
    I am using it from 2006 and it is still working great
    Keep on dude

    To make it harder to reverse engineer. Thousands of hours at the factory scrubbing out numbers to add maybe an extra 10 minutes to a cloners time - yeah, makes sense! :->

    "datashit" Beautifully succinct description! :)
    People in the art or document restoration business sometimes use cameras that use other parts of the electromagnetic spectrum, like infra-red, to show details that would otherwise be hidden. They use other techniques like adjusting contrast, as Dave did, as well. You might like to look into that side of things.

  • @ArduinoTronic
    @ArduinoTronic 12 ปีที่แล้ว

    Hmm. You NEVER need a true universal prog. Firstly manufacturers do get together and decide pin functionality. Devices are often made to similar pin-outs so existing progs can be used (helps sell device). Secondly if you do work with some really odd custom chip its easy enough 2 make an adaptor for the ZIF socket to make the pin-out something familiar. Some co's do this anyway, scramble the data and address lines in design and with adaptor to frustrate reverse engineering. I used to!

    Dave needs a universal programmer to fix the bricked universal programmer?
    Generally is that the way to fix bricked devices, bypassing the boot loader and
    flashing the micro/ eeprom ect directly? Could be a good tutorial.

    Hi Dave! Would you really be able to read that program from the Intel chip if they set up copy protection? Maybe it is supposed to come up blank?

  • @dalriada842
    @dalriada842 12 ปีที่แล้ว

    Yes. The factory was just saving the additional time and expense of doing so. Removing the flux would have been a better thing to do than pointlessly scrub the code from the ARM chip!

  • @siliconwitch
    @siliconwitch 12 ปีที่แล้ว

    Lol at the missing nut :P such a fail. The reflow on the PCB looks really poor too, could be the flux but I thought I saw some shorts. Maybe the reason for the incorrect reading?

    Was thinking of getting an EPROM programmer that can sort the 25 series EPROMS (I normally deal with 27 / 27c's in slot machines..... the 25's are common in some early MPU driven based machines, like JPM's SRU and sys80), which my current mcumall gq-4x true usb programmer can not do (Dam reliable and cost effective programmer this), but seeing that bullet hole in one of it's CPU's, think I will give this one a miss.

    I own two of the PowerShield Commander 2000VA UPS System, and one of them has a blown IC Chip and the other one is working fine.
    Can I copy the Data from the old IC Chip that still works? and can I Transfer Data over to the new blank IC Chip? which is: UW-504PBF DIP28.
    They are programmed for this IC Control Chip for the Power Shield Commander 2000VA UPS System, and they are useless if I'm not able to program the new IC Chip. Because I'm not too sure if they're already being programmed or not?

    Why just 10 minutes? I usually spend a lot of time to find out real chip name on scrubbed chips or chips with custom rebranded names.
    Furthermore, I want to make own web-service to let everyone find any chips by footprint/pinout masks. Because as far as I know there are no such website at this time. That is, in fact, a bit complicated task: creating of unversal datashit grabber/analyzer.:)

    No, I'm simply stating it like it is. The big and reputable universal programmer manufacturers are mostly NOT Chinese companies (although the products may be made in china). That's a fact. As is the fact that a lot of crap universal programmers come from Chinese companies. Wellon seems to be better of the bunch.

      Maybe an idea to look at the ones from Mcumall, especially the gq-4x true usb programmer..... However, I would advise going to Mcumall's site, and use the official local distro agent for where you are (C.U.S in the UK), due to the amount of dodgy knockoff's E-bay has. The one I have, had it for about 4 years, and never let me down yet. Granted, be nice to afford something like a Stag or Dataman, but the buggers are not cheap at all.
