    Climbed into my folks bed one night back in the 70's when i was a kid dealing with a raging ear ache. Night Gallery was on and the episode was the one about the ear wig....Hell no I didn't sleep that night!

    Wow, I've never heard of this anthology before. Thanks! I was trying to look up some more info on Night Gallery, and discovered this is a whole genre: creepy anthologies. A similar show from the 70s is "Ghost Story aka Circle of Fear".

    Loved "Night Gallery"! I feel Rod Serling is the greatest writer for television EVER! Full confession, "Twilight Zone" is my second favorite television show of all time after the original "Star Trek". I own all the DVD's for "Night Gallery", "Ray Bradbury Theater", "Thriller", and many, many more. It's great to see someone far younger keeping the spirit alive of that era of television! Great stuff!!!

    You're right on with Agnes Moorehead, Heath. I loved her in The Bat with Vincent Price and her episode of The Twilight Zone.

      Her roll on that episode of TTZ, is remarkable. There is no dialogue. Wow

    First of all: love that shirt. Very cool.
    Night Gallery, like all anthology thriller programs, is hit and miss for the most part. You have really bad ones, and mediocre ones (Green Fingers, Cool Air), and quality episodes that stay in the brain long after (The Caterpillar). The pilot episode is really good, and I particularly love the first segment with Roddy McDowall; and "Eyes" with Joan Crawford is directed really nicely, of course-- I mean, look who did it. That story is a super example of irony (and it's not just bad luck, like Alanis Morissette thinks irony is, haha).
    Part of the fun of the series is seeing which guest star is featured in any given episode. Some of these actors are exceptional; the episode with Geraldine Page where she wants her attic ghost to do something naughty for her ("Something in the Woodwork" from season three) is worth watching just for her. She did a few shows on Night Gallery.
    The humorous, short "blackout" segments (after season 1) are usually a groan to endure but they can be fun. Often they are nods or tributes to classic film or literature. Someone's being walled up a la Poe, or a vampire is at an employment agency looking for a "healthy" assistant/secretary to hire.
    Overall this series was an enjoyable trip into the macabre. Nothing spectacular, and rarely frightening. I suppose you might even consider it something of a cozy show.

    I was thinking this was in black and white but I stopped and thought about it and remembered I had a BnW TV in my room (13") and that's why I remember it that way. Love the show and plan on getting! Thanks Heath!

    Definately excited for this one and mine is on the way! Can't wait to get it. I have the DVDs but the PQ on those is pretty ordinary so will be great to see the nicely cleaned up HD versions.

    yah one of my fave tv shows , first watched it on TV in 1977 , saw it again in reruns on Sci fi channel and a bunch of local channels in San Fran. the TV movie had a vhs , laser disc release in the 80s. and a VHS mail order only release in the 90s, I loved the show so much I bought all the VHS tapes in the 90s along with the complete DVD set, and now the Blu ray. The Kino lorber release is simply DA BEST, wth audio commentaries for all the eps.

    I'm glad the syndicated version of this series never popped up in my area. I rediscovered this series on tape, then DVD. It was an erratic series, Serling was often at loggerheads with producer Jack Laird. Serling didn't like the short, comedic bits. I'll definitely be picking this up. Amanda Reyes would be an interesting guest on Cereal at Midnight. Great t-shirt!

    Wow, I had no idea the syndication versions were butchered like that. Unfortunately, that's the only way I've ever seen them -- and at that, they were horrible copies on low-powered stations! I wasn't impressed with many of the episodes, but now I see why. ••• I'm very much looking to get this Season 1 set over the holidays, and to giving this show another try. Thank you!

    Thanks, Heath! Excellent coverage and review. One of my biggest pet peeves is the darkness of the old film stock, which is common for that era. The syndicated airings have always been terrible. Did this set improve on that lighting a good bit?

    • @CerealAtMidnight
      @CerealAtMidnight  2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      It definitely does not look dark to me. Colors and saturation look nice and healthy to me. Reminds me a bit of the way Star Trek TOS looks on Blu-ray.

    LOVE Night Gallery. Used to crowd around the tv and savour every moment of it back in the day. As a kid the episode with the Germans in World War 2 where they invaded a certain Count's castle and got their comeuppance creeped me out. Television Never looked better. Sigh....

    Really enjoying this set (much, MUCH more than the butchered syndication prints I used to watch on ME-TV and Sci-Fi Channel). It's interesting Tom Bosley is in BOTH Night Gallery eps directed by Steven Spielberg. But it does feel weird Amanda Reyes didn't provide commentary for the tv pilot movie since she wrote the definitive guide on tv movies. I'm hoping Kino Lorber will put Sixth Sense out since I've never seen those full, non-butchered episodes.

  • @mikedressel6785

    Hi, Heath. Thanks for the review. So, I already own TNG: The Complete Series on DVD -- a 10 disc set! Does that set contain nothing but the edited, syndicated episodes? And also, in terms of picture quality and / or special features, is it really worth an upgrade to blu ray?

    • @CerealAtMidnight
      @CerealAtMidnight  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I don't have Night Gallery on DVD, so I can't say for certain. In no way do I mean to imply that the DVDs were edited or cut, just that it has been treated disrespectfully on both disc and television. I seriously doubt they are. As for the upgrade, that's up to the individual. For me, I prefer to have things in the best possible quality. For Night Gallery fans, I would think they would want the show in the best video quality and with as many extras as possible, but that's up to each person to decide.

    The Caterpillar is my favorite episode. As a kid, it gave me a fear of earwigs A close runner up is Lindemann's Catch with the mermaid. Have you watched Hush Hush Sweet Charlotte? Agnes Moorehead is excellent in her role.

    • @CerealAtMidnight
      @CerealAtMidnight  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks for the sub! Truthfully, someone asks me about I Dream of Jeannie every single day now. I haven't heard anything about a delay, but with the supply chain issues, it's possible. I am usually among the first reviewers to get Mill Creek releases, so as soon as it shows up, I'll be firing the camera up. It's seriously my number one release of 2021. Bold statement, but it's true! I'm sure Mill Creek is hoping against another delay more than anyone else is, since they don't want to EVER delay a product, and the issues tend to come from the warehouse, or the factory itself. Stay tuned...
