Kudos to Stephen Colbert for asking Mr. Spielberg more questions about his involvement with the the 70s horror anthology, "Night Gallery." I wonder if Colbert is a fan? What's strange is that according to "Night Gallery" historians Scott Skelton and Jim Benson, the reason Spielberg's segment had to be recut was because of a last minute change in the cast so some scenes had to be reshoot with the new actor. The director who reshot those scenes, the great Jeannot Szwarc, never mentioned Spielberg's single-take version as the reason why and he indicated his contributions to the segment were minimal and that most of what you see is from Mr. Spielberg's filming. I wonder if this is a case of two directors who are aware the segment isn't very good and neither wants to take credit! What also makes Spielberg's version of events questionable is that the producer of "Night Gallery" was a guy named Jack Laird and he encouraged his directors to be innovative --sometimes to the detriment of the show, upon looking back. We also know that Spielberg was hired back by Laird to direct the brilliant "A Fear of Spiders" but Spielberg backed out because of exhaustion and the segment was directed by John Astin. Would Laird have hired Spielberg back if he had been so unhappy with his work on "Make me Laugh?" It's been 50 years since these events and people's memories become a little fuzzy and we remember what we want to remember.

I have seen several thing Spielberg did for TV before he did Duel and Jaws....some of them are very good.....Night Gallery Pilot, The Columbo episode.....LA 2017 was part of "Name of the Game" series and that was good.
Spielberg doesn't think highly of that era, but some of it was very good.

When Tom Snyder interviewed his new boss , David Letterman , David said something like Hollywood CEOs are pinheads . Now you know why . It's like George Lucas's American Graffiti ; after he showed it to a test audience , which loved the movie , a CEO at Universal was pissed saying they're going to have to re-edit the whole movie and blah blah blah . They don't know anything about movies even now . That explains how they let Jar Jar Abrams screwup both the STAR WARS and STAR TREK franchises .

I first saw the 'Make Me Laugh' part of 'Night Gallery' on TV in the '80s and was surprised at how flat and conventional it seemed for Spielberg (I have since seen some of his other more workman-like TV stuff that is similarly unimpressive) but I had no idea it had been reshot by another, uncredited, director!
