  • You can consider a short-term health plan if you need medical coverage outside of open enrollment. These policies provide temporary medical insurance with limited health coverage. While all public exchange plans must comply with the Affordable Care Act, such as providing minimum essential coverage, short-term plans don't.
    Because of this, you may not be able to get coverage through a short-term plan if you have a pre-existing condition. Insurers can also differ premiums based on health status or gender. Because of this, 14 states and DC ban the sale of these plans.
    Additionally, the Biden Administration set new rules on short-term plans. Starting in September 2024, these plans will have a maximum duration of three months.
