I always love hearing the "if you commit suicide, you don't get the insurance" line in movies.
Typically, suicide only nullifies an insurance policy benefit if the death is within 2 years of issue.
Outside of the 2 year contestable period, suicide as a cause of death would trigger a payout of the policy benefits.
(if you have an existing policy in force for a number of years, and increase the amount, the increased amount above the original is subject to the same 2 year window from the date of increase)

I used to work at the head office of a life insurance company that issued policies in NY and other states, with policies going back to the 1920's. I don't recall any contestable period being longer than 2 years.

If the defendant is to be believed, this was assisted suicide in all but the last case. By holding the firearm while it discharged, the law says he is guilty of unlawful homicide. The exact charge is open to debate, but Murder 1 is pretty much out of the question. Myself, I would charge him with involuntary manslaughter. What right do we have to tell someone they have to live in unbearable suffering?

But what I do with my body is my business. Telling me I can't use drugs is saying that the state owns me. We fought an insurrection to stop people from owning other people. Now the government wants to bring it back again but where they are the sole owners.

It might be disagreeable, but assisted suicide should be a legal way to end your life. Not for any circumstance, but under conditions like terminal cancer, aids, ALS, MS, etc. No one should have to suffer a slow agonizing death, so that people not even connected to them can feel better about how that other person died. Both of my grandmas died slowly, painfully. In their shoes, I wouldn't want to drag it out. I saw what it did to my parents. It's devastating.

There needs to be a legally recognized process for terminal patients to call it quits.
The law today is more concerned with control over human life, rather than its quality.
Laws concerning suicide and assisted termination are too often a question of control, and not compassion.

Where do you think you live? Nazi Germany? The cops are supposed to follow the law in this country
      (they don't, but they're supposed to )
First, they can't serve an ordinary warrant "no knock" They have to have "no knock warrant" Robinette didn"t say, "I'll see the judge and get a warrant" of any kind. He said "pick him up". It just doesn't work that way. Haven't you ever heard of the 4th amendment???
""The right of the people to be secure in their persons, houses, papers, and effects, against unreasonable searches and seizures, shall not be violated, and no warrants shall issue, but upon probable cause, supported by oath or affirmation, and particularly describing the place to be searched, and the persons or things to be seized."
Without a specific "no knock"warrant, signed by a judge, all they can legally do is knock on his door and ask him to come out. And I'm pretty sure his friend has a nice lawsuit for illegal arrest and detainment. He wasn't wanted for anything.
Even in Houston the criminal pigs have to at least lie to a judge and get a no knock warrant before they break in and murder people.

@@exilfromsanity There are many law and order episodes in which there are legal repercussions for warrant-related issues. Just because they don't specifically discuss the warrant doesn't meant they didn't get one, any more than the fact that they don't specifically discuss the evidence with the DA every single time means they weren't involved. Not every episode has every specific aspect of the investigation, largely for pacing reasons.
