  • Here is the 1000-footer Mesabi Miner departing Duluth, Minnesota on the afternoon of October 16, 2019 with a load of iron ore she picked up from the Canadian National dock. A group of school children (presumably on a field trip) were gathered on the north side of the piers screaming "honk, honk!" in hopes of getting a salute from the Miner. She didn't disappoint... and indeed even gave those watching a second salute before she slipped out of the Duluth shipping canal.

    What good positive memories for children...the lakes, the birds, and the ships...a wonderful sound the ship's horns make...reminds me of my days as a Navy seaman near the piers at night
    So proud to make Duluth my hometown🤗🌞😁🇺🇸⚓🗽

    Captains have children too. Maybe his kid was one of the kids on the field trip.

      Years ago, maybe the captain was a kid on a similar field trip, with a similar experience, and never forgot it.

    Cool that you caught the bridge going up, too. As an ocean-crossing Navy guy, these GLakes ships amaze me. What a challenge in ship-handling.
    I was hoping you'd also catch that curvy blonde who was shooting pictures ahead of you.
    Anyone know why some ships have two types of horns. A big "ship" one and one that sounds like a freight train?

    • @1Long2Short
      @1Long2Short  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      The second horn you're hearing (that sounds like a freight train) is the horn on the lift bridge, giving a response to the ship. The ship and the bridge typically exchange salutes as a friendly greeting to each other... plus it also makes the boat watchers happy!

    They are not just for kids!

      I think everyone watching ships from the pier is a kid. Some are just older than others. 🙂

    Don't give the kids bad info, 1 Long and 2 Short is a passing signal

    • @1Long2Short
      @1Long2Short  4 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      On the lakes, it's known as a Captain's salute, meant as a friendly greeting from ships to other ships, the lift bridge, or spectators.

    • @12345fowler
      @12345fowler 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It was said by the bridge crew that once the ship is in the canal it would be too late to stop them passing the bridge if so needed. As the salute is at that stage (ship in canal) I believe technically it could be a "passing signal" but for all purpose and intend this is more of a salute than a real go/no go signal.
