    In a different situation early on most importantly, I think Rudy would've shined in the NBA. But then again, can't hide from injuries.

    Even though his career in the NBA was short and didn't meet expectations, it's hard to not see it as legendary. He since has came back to Spain and has won plenty of hardware with Real Madrid and national team. Euroleagues, Eurocups, World champions and bronze and silver in the Olympics. He still plays to this day and is as clutch as it gets. He lost his bounce but is one of the most accomplished european players of all time. Also he came on a time where europeans were constantly overlooked. Rudy, El Chacho, Spanoulis, Navarro and others played couple seasons in NBA and were never respected. Came back to Europe and became legends. Nowadays you have a two time Serbian MVP, a two time Greece MVP, Doncic (future MVP) and future 1st round pick from France

    Loved his game and that Portland team was one of my favorites and had so much young talent.

  • @8301TheJMan
    @8301TheJMan ปีที่แล้ว +11

    McMillan is the first and foremost reason he never lived up to expectations. That guy underutilized the shit outa Rudy, even during those first couple seasons where he showed so much promise. But after he went down with injurie, when he came back Nate barely ever played him, and when he did he was on such a short leash that it completely obliterated his confidence. He went from a confident and highly talented young player who had the skill and athletic ability to eventually become a star in the league - to an overly self-conscious and tentative basket-case who barely got playing time, all in a matter of a few seasons. Im a hardcore Blazers fan, and absolutely loved that team and thought he was gonna become a more athletic Genobli or Brent Barry. Which is impressive seeing as how Barry specifically - is hands down one of the most athletic white guys in NBA history, even won a dunk contest in 96 - if i remember correctly). He had the shot, that both Barry and Geno had, while being quicker and more explosive to boot.
    Back then Portland really underutilized/squandered a significant amount of talent back during the late 2000's and early-mid 2010's. There were a number of guys who legit who legit woulda/coulda prolly blossomed into stars if they had been on damn near any other team in the whole fuckin league. I think Rudy is the best example of this, but there was also the case of Nic Batum. Though he at least had a decent career, averaging double figs a few times, recognized as being one of the best "x-factors" in the league back in his prime, So his career wasn't nearly as tragic no doubt, but he was legit a better all-around player than Rudy Fern was - as he had an even better outside shot, better pull-up mid-range jumper, was almost as athletic, a little better at taking his man off the dribble and driving to the hoop, good post moves - seeing as how he physically speaking he was a slightly smaller version Kevin Durant, (which is why he , despite being skinny, his length a great post moves allowed him to dominate pretty much any wing in the league), and was also an excellent passer!!Those parts of his game though were only slightly better than Rudy's, there was however one thing that he was head-and-shoulders above Rudy was: and that was the fact that he was a ball-hawk perimeter/wing on-ball defender. It's still pretty shitty knowing that, despite being a solid role player, Batum easily had the skill/talent to have become an All-Star level go-go scorer. At the end of the day - the combination of him, like Rudy, being both far too passive offensively and felt uncomfortable being an assertive scoring threat, but most importantly were both grossly misused by both McMillan and then Stott, were the reasons that prevented them from ever becoming a star player.

      JailBlazers ruined Dražen Petrović as well

    • @8301TheJMan
      @8301TheJMan ปีที่แล้ว

      @@meekmeads Drazen was the shit, but he was way before the "Jail-Blazer" era of late 90's to early 2000's. When he was at Portland - it was like in '89, '90, or some time round then. And though they certainly did underutilize him back a little bit, but the fact is when he was there - Portland was stacked with guys about as good - or even better than Drazen at that point of his career. They simply didn't have enough PT to go around, after so much of it being for prime Clyde and prime Jerome Kersey - (with Clyde being one of the top 3 or 4 greatest SG's in NBA history and then Jerome was/is one of the most underrated players in Blazer history and was legit one of the top 15 or so SF's in the league during that time period).
      Plus there was Ainge and Cliff Robinson, who - though they played at other positions primarily, (for Cliff it was PF and with Ainge it was at PG), both still shared some of their PT while filling in as a wing. And since both of them were great scorers off the bench at the time, (with Cliff also being a phenomenal defender of both PF's and wings), which cut into the amount of looks at the basket that Drazen would get whenever he'd actually get playing-time.

    Rudy definitely wasn't utilized right. He killed the men's Olympic team, with Kobe doing his best to shut him down. Spent some time in the NBA but struggled. Then left for overseas, only to resume ballin' out. Most guys leave the league and struggle because they can't play. Not so with Rudy. Would have loved to have seen him with a coach that truly knew how to utilize unique talented ala Coach Pop, Don Nelson...

    I recommend you do a stunted growth on Joe Smith out of Maryland. He was the #1 pick in 1995 draft. In my opinion he was a total bust. His career 10.9 pts and 6.3 rebounds. I would love hear your perspective on his career.

      @AK-74K ปีที่แล้ว +4

      That's disappointing for a number one pick, but I am scratching my head how someone who for a 16 year career in the NBA averaging over 10 points a game can be called a total bust. That's not what a bust is

    • @duanejackson4430
      @duanejackson4430 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @AK 74 That is a bust you are drafted to be the # 1 pick. Being the # 1 overall. You should be a piece that starts to turn the franchise around. Joe Smith did none of that. By his 3rd year he was journey man. His second year he average 18.5 ppg . And that was highest he ever average. If you are the 1# overall pick, and you are a backup on your 3rd team in 4 years. Yes he is a bust! He was in the same draft class as Kelvin Garnett, Rasheed Wallace, Jerry Stackhouse!
