- In the summer of 2021 Giannis Antetokounmpo was at the top of the basketball world. After receiving the MVP in both 2019 and 2020 the last thing Giannis needed was a title and he captured that by defeating the Phoenix Suns in 6 games. At the time Giannis was considered by most as the league's best player and that would continue until the Bucks were upset by the Miami Heat in the first round of the 2023 playoffs. Nikola Jokic would then have his historic playoff run taking out that same Miami Heat team in the NBA finals and ever since then he has now been considered the league's best player despite Giannis still be as dominant as ever. Today we talk about how Giannis lost his spot as the NBA's best player and how it has gotten to the point where he is a bit underrated.

And he made the jump to a truly elite playmaker. Before he was merely good, but at this point, he's up at the very top of the league. Its just so hard to win another MVP when your last MVP was quite literally arguably the greatest of all time if you played a full season.

It’s because we haven’t seen a fully healthy Bucks team in the playoffs since 2021. Giannis missed games in both the Heat 2023 and Pacers 2024 series that they lost. And last time he was healthy, he lost a 7 game series without Middleton against Boston in 2022.
Giannis is definitely still amazing and more underrated now. People shouldn’t be counting out a healthy Bucks team so quickly. And I say all this as a Celtics fan.

Agree, most people only care about the playoffs and kind of rightfully so, so it makes sense that Giannis' stock has dropped so much since he's missed so much time. A more extreme case would be PG and especially kawhi. Even a great full series in a loss could help people acknowledge him again.

One thing to say about the Adriain Griffin firing. Not advocating for his firing at all here and it is still crazy that they fired him 43 games into his head coaching career when they were doing relatively fine. But there is a lot of revisionist history with that record. Everyone was complaining about griffin's bad schemes and failure to win the locker room during the first half of the season. When the bucks defense plummeted everyone was complaining about how griffin was using lopez and giannis. In reality they won a lot of games based on the sheer talent of giannis and dame etc. still doesn't explaining how they fired him when the team was the 2 seed 48 games into his career but just want to point out that it was a very rocky start to a head coaching job

@@brianngure151No, Giannis didn’t approve of him either. There’s compilations out of him publicly being against him. Clips where he says “make a damn play,” “put me back in the game,” “I’m done with this,” and other things like that while he’s walking away from the bench mad.
@@brianngure151anyone who was watching the team could see that they had no chance of making a finals run with him as their coach because their defense was so horrendous. They were similar to the pacers but the difference was that their players are much older and injury prone so if they were gonna win a title it couldn’t have been with a team like that. The pacers only even got so far because of massive injuries, that bucks team wasn’t going anywhere under griffin.
Things Giannis has accomplished. A championship, named to top 75 players all time, Bucks all time leading Scorer, 2x mvp, 1 defensive player of the year, most improved player and finals mvp. Hes already a HOF.

I still don’t understand why the Bucks fired Budenholzer, who mind you, bought them a CHAMPIONSHIP, and only lost in the 2023 Playoffs because of both Giannis being injured as well as the fact that Mike was grieving the death of his brother.
Cause in the NBA, and really sports as a whole, anytime there’s an issue people seem to immediately point to the coach, I don’t know why but that seems to be the case. Look at coaching turnovers just the last few seasons
As a Bucks fan who watched them go down in flames in 2023, Bud absolutely deserved to get fired. I truly give my condolences to his family, but that doesn't excuse the basic mistakes he was making. Haven't watched the series since it actually happened, so some of my statements might be a little off, but they are all genuine and its only the games that I might get wrong.
In game 4 or 5, the Bucks were leading by double digits coming down the stretch in the 4th, and then the Heat started to go on a run, and Bud ONLY called a timeout after Butler got a fast break dunk and took the lead.
He continued to refuse to make adjustments for who was defending Butler who was torching Holiday. Jrue was just too small and too tired to guard Jimmy, and when Giannis came back especially, he shouldn't have been the main defender on him.
He continued to let Jrue take way too many shots as he burned down our offense. Most people don't realize that Middleton played the best basketball of his season in the series, but instead of making him the focal point, Jrue was getting the same amount of shots as Middleton. Keep in mind, Lopez also tied (or passed, can't remember) his career high in playoff single game scoring this series, but wasn't used nearly as much as he should have offensively when Giannis was out. Speaking of Bud failing to use Lopez, remember when Lopez was NOT in the game and it allowed Butler to force OT?
He just absolutely failed to call timeouts in crucial moments. Two stand out, and they were both in game 5 iirc. The first was when Butler hit that insane lob to force OT. There was still 2-3 seconds left on the clock and Milwaukee had a time out, but Bud just let Milwaukee dribble out the clock instead of actually getting a play constructed. Then, in OT, the Heat go up (can't even remember how it happened) and instead of calling a TO, he just lets the Bucks go and it results in GRAYSON ALLEN getting the ball and DRIVING INSIDE, passing on an open mid range shot, to do some stupid eurostep that he misses AFTER the shot clock already expired. What an absolute circus that Bud was largely responsible for. Holiday sucked too, and Giannis failed at the FT line and handling the ball, but at the end of the day, Bud and Jrue's failures were the biggest issues and that's why they got chopped.
And also, keep in mind the idea of Bud not making adjustments was around long before this and if they didn't win in 2021, he was gone. Jrue also never had a good offensive post season in Milwaukee, even in 2021.
Buds brother died before game 4, honestly too idk what buds could've done with a bunch of old and bad perimeter defenders and the Miami Heat having THE greatest shooting series ever.

It is Ironic that the bucks only made it to the 2021 championship thanks to their opponents stars getting injured and since then the only thing preventing them from reaching another championship round has been consistent injuries to their star players in the post season. I am not saying it’s Karma or something like that as I think they have been contenders especially in 2022 and 2023, it just goes to show you how much has to go right for team to make it to the mountain top let alone do it again.
I mean Giannis also missed half the ECF that season with an injury and basically dominated the Mickey Mouse run Suns on one ankle. Still ironic.

@lowkey4545 I didn't even mention rings or dominance, Luka, SGA nor Embiid have any rings, I'm just talking stats and skills, averaging 30+ ppg 10+ rebounds, multiple blocks a game is definitely top 5.
(Shaq needed Kobe and D Wade to win any championships, not to even mention Penny or his ring chasing.) (Wilt was a selfish player most of the time who was dominated by Bill Russell and he absolutely needed Hal Greer to win with the 76ers, and Jerry West and Elgin Baylor to win as a superteam on the Lakers. (Also, the "dominance like shaq/wilt" is really just playstyle and physicality not one to one copy
Anybody who pays close attention to the game knows Giannis is still that guy hopefully the Bucks can stay healthy because that’s the reason for they downfall the past few seasons and Giannis could have won MVP last season so he might just be out for vengeance this season but knowing the NBA all it takes is for a new player to have a breakout season to get MVP Jokic got lucky that it didn’t go to SGA.

Giannis is at worst the third best player in the league, but in the playoffs his game just doesn't feel as dominant. Teams like the Heat, the Celtics or Toronto in 2019 limited his production by just putting bodies between him and the basket and forcing him to take outside shots and free throws.
I think he needs to improve his post game and maybe start playing the 5 more like AD to reach the top again.
I like Giannis, but I'm surprised at the number of people who have ignored this.

Even if they do stay healthy, their sky is still limited. Giannis's health has been an issue, and his game is still pretty limited offensively. Dame and Middleton are in their early-to-mid-30s, and the injuries are already building on their bodies. Lopez may start to decline any time now, their depth is unimpressive, and they have almost no assets.

I agree with you guys on most points except towards the end when you claimed that seeing someone do something like dominate a game for the first time is more impressive than when it's being done consistently. I call recency bias on this and beg to bring your attention to the level of effort, will, physical strength and health that is required to consistently do anything over a sustained period of time. That my friends far outweighs any youthful exuberance expressed on the court until experience and expertise are put into play. Thank you.
Giannis is clearly the second best player on earth. No one can touch jokic, we know that. But Shai and Embiid don’t have enough to challenge him. And Luka isn’t close either. Giannis scores almost as much, and is FAR more efficient. Luka is a better offensive player, but Giannis’s defense makes him the better overall player. Giannis shouldn’t be forgotten by fans because of injuries and bad luck.

The reason why giannis is "underrated" is that he isn't as skilled as other big men look at Anthony Davis, Jokic, Embiid. They all have deep bags, Giannis is just a rim runner. Right off the bat, Giannis Antetokounmpo is a better player than Anthony Davis. Availability first and foremost, but also efficiency, defense, peak, overall career. It's not a fair comparison and hasn't been for some years now. Sorry for AD, but injuries really fucked him up beyond repair.
Embiid and Jokic are more fair comparisons. Each of them has something that the other cannot replicate. Jokic is the best point center that's ever graced the game, an offensive maestro and an advanced stats darling. Embiid is the best scorer among the three and can be both a back to the basket traditional center and a midrange threat. Giannis is the best defender and athlete among the three, not to mention the best finisher at the rim.
2019 Giannis was 24. Very much still developing. Who was winning and carrying their team at that age? Jordan wasn't. Lebron wasn't. The Raptors were better coached and had a more experienced team, and the Bucks crumbled

I think people’s expectation was astronomically high when Giannis won his first title, and it was a little bit unrealistic. As such, I could see how Giannis would get scrutinized a lot from a mile away.
