❤️❤️❤️❤️ Just a tip about the peaches… If you put them in boiling water for a few seconds say 15 or 10 and then plunge them into Coldwater their skins peel off just like tomatoes do. You don’t have to sit there for hours and peel them they just slide right off.

I was so nervous to order from azure for the first time. Once I ordered I got a call from the director of our local drop off and she walked me through everything. I’ve met so many local gardening, homesteading friends just from chatting while waiting for the azure truck. Also my director will hold on to my order for me if I can’t make it to the drop off. Everyone I’ve met has been so kind and helpful.

You can now make vanilla in your Insta-Pot. Not a canner but Insta-Pot only. Search for the video's. Basically you process it in the Insta-Pot and then set it aside for 2 weeks, then it's ready. Just use more vanilla beans than they call for and split them open and scrap the beans out too.

I've been doing Azure for almost 6 years. Love it! We meet in an empty parking lot for our pick up. But we also have a fb group where we can all talk find people to pick up for us and pre-covid we did splits. So if you didn't want 25lb.s of oats you claimed how much you wanted and when it filled it got added to the order. Then a few people met to split and you could pick up at the coordinators house for the next week. Azure really works out great.

Your comment of oats reminds me of the two, 50 lb bags of Buckeye oats (fav brand, dint think they exist any more) for 90% off as a local grocery chain was revamping thier bulk offerings. Yes, 2 of us liked a volume of oatmeal for breakfast, oatmeal based cookies and goodies, blended into a flour as a thicker....About 2 years later found us broke at Christmas with quite the quantity of oats threatening to sour. Everyone got quantities of oatmeal cookies for Christmas and a ureka moment had us freezing unbaked cookies on every tray and in every baking dish we could scrape up from the kitchen cupboards. Then we layered them between sheets of waxed paper in coffee tins and gave them frozen so they could be baked later a few or dozen at a time. It went over super with the young adult types but younger kids were thrilled to have thier very own cookies to bake too. - 50 pounds is a lot of oats.

Becky, freeze dry your peaches. You don't even have to peel them. Just cut them into 1/4 inch wedges, put them on your trays on the wider side of the peach and start the cycle. I am able to put in around 25 peaches of different sizes into my medium-size unit (4 trays). These are delicious as a snack. That can help you tame those midnight cravings in a healthy way. I love FD peaches. You can also put those dry wedges into the blender and make peach powder out of them for a quick peach juice whenever you need it.

We started using Azure a couple years ago. We meet at a local truck stop. Everyone helps unload. You can't go wrong with Azure. I have never had an issue with anything we purchase from them. We buy all of our bulk food and probably 75% of our monthly groceries. Their milk is the best you will find outside of getting it straight from the cow. I will admit it was a little intimidating the first couple times meeting strangers. But these "strangers" are all like minded people so you get acquainted pretty easily. Give them a try.

I just placed a $851 order with a shipping cost of $72, which is amazing because my items total weight is just over 200lbs. Here’s what’s funny..I only ordered half of what I wanted…lol. Being my first time, there are so many things I need to get started on my self-sufficient journey. This was my first year planting ANYTHING ever so, I started with a flower garden. I amazed myself with how well my plants are doing but, I’m glad I didn’t start out with vegetables because I’ve learned a lot about pests and insects that are in my area. They seemed to really like my petunias and completely decimated them. I’ve been investing in items to mill grain and work tougher doughs. Now, I’ll be investing in items to can organic foods…even though I didn’t grow them myself..lol
I can’t wait to see many more videos and tutorials…thank you so much for sharing your journey, you’re truly an inspiration. 💞

It was expensive but several years ago I bought an electric strainer. It's much less tiring and lots faster to use than a hand cranked strainer is.
You can make great tomato juice with the electric strainer.

I hate to be one of "those" people but I just can't stop thinking about the way you picked your apples and pears. If you pull them straight off the tree you risk damaging the next year's fruiting buds. That's why so many people get good crops only every second year. It takes a year for the trees to repair the damage from being harvested incorrectly. The best way to pick them is to "put the eyes to the sky " as the old saying goes. That means you grab the fruit and tip the bottom toward the branch it's growing from. That should break it cleanly from the stem without causing any damage to the tree.
Another reason they may produce poorly every other year is if they aren't culled in late spring. Producing seeds takes a ton of energy so If you don't cull them to 2 or 3 fruits per bunch, you may get small fruits and a poor crop the following year.

@@TheEldersHomestead you are most welcome. We learned those tips from a friend long ago and our fruit trees have produced tons of apples for decades since. Sadly though, our home was hit by a rock slide and it and the entire property has been condemned due to continuing instability of the area. It's actually slated for demolition on Monday or Tuesday. Even more sadly, all the fruit trees will be going with it. That's going to be hard to watch. (We bought the property right next to our old home so we get a ringside view) It makes me happy to know you and your trees will benefit from the knowledge we no longer have use for though.
We may plant more once we get over the loss of the property we worked so hard, for 32 years, to turn into a paradise.

      @Zoe-sj7of 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

@@mustwereallydothis I'm so sorry to hear that. Have you ever thought of moving the trees into a big container? I'm not sure how big your fruit trees are? Another idea is to air layer from the mother trees. It can take 3-8 months for roots to grow, but you will have a clone of the original tree. That way you will be able to grow fruit again. Look up air layering trees, I saved my dying plum tree this way.

    • @mustwereallydothis
      @mustwereallydothis 2 ปีที่แล้ว

@@Zoe-sj7ofThanks for your kind words. Unfortunately though, massive, decades old fruit trees simply don't fit in any sort of container and, as skilled of a gardener as I may be, I don't think I can pull off air layering before tomorrow morning. We're just going to have to accept we are losing them.
We did save seedlings from the cherry trees though.
A local store sells apple and plum trees with 4 different varieties grafted onto a hearty root stock. I plan to get one of each in the spring. That should be fun in a few years.

I have my grandmother's steam juicer and I can't wait until my apple trees are mature enough to start producing fruit so I can use it to make apple juice. A few notes though-depending on your apples, you may not get a good tasting apple sauce if you use the steam juicer. My grandma always tossed the leftover pulp because she said that it was kind of flavorless mush because all of the apple flavor was in the juice. I know some people who have used the pulp in muffins or other baked goods though so you wouldn't necessarily have to dump it all if you find it's not as flavorful as you expected. And it may just be the type of apples my grandmother used. I would imagine an apple with a really distinct and strong 'apple' bite to it would maybe retain a bit more of that flavor even when juiced? You could try experimenting with the length of time you steam them too-maybe steaming them a bit less would yield less juice but a more 'appley' applesauce? The other thing I wanted to mention was my grandma had a little trick for adding a bit of a surprise to her apple juice when steaming the apples. If you want to add other flavors to the juice, just toss in a few handfuls of berries. She made blueberry apple juice and raspberry apple juice this way.

    • @helenbrill2330

You're going to LOVE the food strainer! I was handed down one from my grandparents and it is one of my most recommended food preservation tools. It makes tomato and apple sauce a breeze! There is a bit of a learning curve to cleaning the metal strainer part, I recommend soaking it in water for a few minutes and then taking a sharp knife and running it along the outside of the sieve to loosen all of the bits that are stuck. It will come clean much easier if you do this.

I stumbled across your channel at 3am this morning while feeding my 4 month old daughter. I’m a crazy busy Mum of 5 (12 M, 11 M, 9 F, 8 M, 4 month F) and I spent the wee hours of this morning watching you prepare 28 different meals! Your energy and down to earth personality is amazing and I really feel like I’m in your kitchen with you! Apart from spending time in your garden and chasing your chickens, what do you do for work? I heard you mention work in one of your videos. Thanks for taking time to read this! Jen (Sydney, Australia)

I love Azure, I get a text from the drop off person when the truck is 15 min. out from her home, that gives me time to get to her place and it's unloaded. The boxes all have the name of the person's order and your your email tells how many boxes you have. Thank you for all your great video's💕

So pleased you bought a steam juicer as I am waiting on mine to arrive in the mail any day now. Can't wait to see what you do with yours so I can learn from you before my harvest time comes round (It's only just spring here in Australia). I wish we had something like Azure over here, your haul looks fantastic!

I have a Squeezo, similar to what you got with the 3 different size screens. I love it for Apple sauce. Wash, stem, quarter and cook till tender, run thru med screen and can it up. I can do 2 or 3 bu. a day if hubby helps. I made several kinds of chili sauce, catsup and juice easily this year. Looking at the steamer for when berries start producing.

Yay!! I'm about to put in an enormous Azure order! My buckets are sold out and so are the peaches! I ordered 60lbs of seconds, I think that's what you must have gotten given the price? They are supposed to be smaller and not as perfect, but they're cheaper! We're also trying 60lbs of pears. Planting fruit trees this fall so hopefully we won't have to buy anymore next time! That Strauss yogurt is our favorite. Congrats on the massive garden haul!

Juicer steamer is the best. I use mine for apple juice. I bought the parts for my kitchen aide to process the applesauce to remove skin, seeds and such. Works amazing. Looking forward to see all the ways that you use it.

Thanks for sharing this, Becky! I tried Azure Standard nearly 10 years ago. Was so happy with pricing and quality. Back then, our pickups were in a public spot, with delivery times varying month to month. Challenging for a working person. Seems like things have changed quite a bit since then! I’m pleased to see so many smaller quantity items, and boxes packed for each customer. I’ll definitely look into resuming with them.

Completely understand feeling uncomfortable for your first pickup. We had a similar experience, but our coordinator wasn’t at our first drop off. No one at the drop off had ever been there before. The next order was dropped off at a nearby church (a different address) while we waited at the designated location. Luckily the coordinator was at the church and accepted our order. The truck was driving off when we saw it drive by… but… we love the products!!!!

Azure Standard is my new favorite source, thanks to you. For us in SW Washington, it's practically "local" and they do a great job labeling and describing all products. I finally placed an order about a month ago and asked them to credit you for the referral. Had you not shared info on them, I might still not know about them! Every encounter with Azure has been positive...whether by email or phone. And I enjoy meeting like minded people at the pickup locations.

You are going to LOVE Alexandre's A2/A2 yogurt! If you've never tried their milks, you meed to as well. The Alexandre farm is about 4 miles from me. 3 yrs ago my husband ran into one of their workers at the corner store near the property we had just purchased. It's the only dairy product that doesn't get me sick. I promise it makes THE BEST yogurt!

Thank you for explaining! They do it at churches where I live, but I've still been kinda intimidated to do it! Maybe I'll do it anyway now!
Also, I just found your channel, and I've been binging it! I do the same kind of stuff you do, and I'm the gardener and food preparer in my house, so you remind me of me ;)! I saw that you have a Foodsaver and I wanted to recommend a Vacmaster vacuum sealer for you! It's expensive, but it's a buy once cry once kind of thing - it's worth the investment! We used the Foodsaver so often the motors would burn out once every year or so, and the cost of a Vacmaster is equal to what we spent buying Foodsavers every year! Plus you can vacuum seal canning jars with it, and you can control the amount of time it seals, the temp it seals at, it works with Mylar bags, etc. The bags are also cheaper than Foodsaver bags! :) Hope it helps you in your collecting of tools for the job!
Edit: PS I think I said this before, but I've been making soap for 6 years so if you have any questions feel free to ask :3

My sister travels a lot on a somewhat irregular schedule so got a food saver for refrigerator items decades ago. It was great for gift giving occasions because there was always some type of add-on or bags you could buy for it. The canning jsr sealers were a game changers functionally, counter space wise, cost wise, and plastic use wise.

Hi Becky. Love your videos. You're such an inspiration. Also because of all your fantastic hard work I too have started making my own spice combos, vanilla, canning, gardening, freezing, etc. Thank you for being such an awesome inspiration. And I too can't wait to see your videos this fall and winter. Do you think in one of your upcoming videos it would be possible for you to go over maybe in a little bit more depth the book that you purchased in this video? I would like to know why you feel it's such a remarkable book. I love word and mouth recommendations. But hearing how it inspires you also helps us to take the step to purchase it. It doesn't have to be a full video on the book; just maybe a few minutes. Thank you again for all your hard work!

I think back and wish I could have learned how to cook better and have a garden and can stuff . My ex would not have a garden no way nor think of canning or any thing.

I finally put my first order in. I live in the boonies so the closest pick up is an hour away... I am excited and a smidgen nervous. Most of this order is flour and sugar and storage buckets with gama lids. Everything I got was cheaper than i can get it else where if i can get it anywhere else than Amazon.
