This is the old mechanical train board, which has painted cards flipping to show which trains are arriving and leaving. It has since been replaced by an electronic sign.
Growing up, we used to take the Metroliner to visit family in the DC area. I always got so memorized at the train board flipping as the classical music was playing.
Back when everything was BETTER. The departure board wasn't some cheap and easy electronic screen. Departure, arrival, and other status announcements were made by a REAL PERSON and not some stupid automated voice that can't even pronounce basic words. Back when trains were faster and more frequent. Please, may we have this again sometime..
When did you videotape this? If I remember correctly, it was the fire in Penn Station in the fall of 2000 that led to the replacement of this sign with an electronic sign. I think the old LIRR sign is still there though.

This was back then
Back in 1999 I got to see these still in operation. Glad I saw them before they were replaced with the digital boards.

I don't know, but there was at least one other sign there between this one and the one that's there now...
