That was one of my biggest worries with this project. Falling into "Cenozoic Earth Syndrome". But I have a few ideas I want to try, and hopefully even if it doesn't end up being super distinct, it'll at least be interesting on its own.

mustelids are very much my favorite animal group and i too agree that they don't get the spotlight anywhere near as much as they deserve. so this is very cool
Good thing for you, You can use fossil Mustelids to see how you're first medium sized herbivores, omnivores and carnivores could look like so that's fun. Edit: I'm very interested in spec evo as well and believe a lot of body plans could evolve on this planet some I believe are more likely to evolve are ground sloth, Felid, Ursid, ungulate and primate body plans I believe the Ungulate body plan will be more likely to evolve as the Pig tailed Bandicoot (this animal is a Marsupial) and of course ungulates have evolved hooved feet there is a rodent that has nearly evolved hooves it is called the Agouti so I think ungulate like mammals and felid like mammals are more likely to evolve. Also I am now a new sub so hope that makes you happy like this video did for me.
Me too! So many people are making such interesting seed worlds! One of my hopes for this book in popularity is that more kids will become interested in evolution and nature science! :)

An idea that I think would work is an otter descendent that fills the niche of a bear. 1 otters are related to bears 2 because of the abundance of food and no other prey in the water they will over populate and have to start our competing each other or become purely land animals.
This is nice 😍. I'm also starting my own Spec Evo about a world of *Lovebird Parrots* & *Christmas Island Crabs* 🦜🦀. I wanna see how evolution will affect these 2 organisms 😅

I really love your project so far, however, some constructive criticism I have is that I wish we could see more of the in between stages of something like a small generalist prairie dog to a large megafaunal grazer like the Prairie Hog. Other than that, I really like how you are taking this series, & I hope to see more.
It would be interesting to see the otter to become something like the Enhydriodon omoensis then take similar evolutionary steps to the Pakicetus! From otter to dolphin/whale! Also it would be cool to see polar bears sized wolverine in the Arctic!
1) I must admit that for a Spec Evo Project which came around almost a decade ago, it have take time that others Seed Workd Spec Projects like Serina the World of Birds came out in a noticeable degree. Here, since around 1 year and an half, there have been a clear "boom" wave of Serina-like Seed Worlds which have pop up online (mostly on TH-cam but also a little elsewhere). And you being just among these in this sort of ocean. To be fair, even if all these projects are basically "copy-paste" version of Serina but with the canaries replaced by another main veterbrate subject, I still find interesting all these differents takes on this subgenre of Spec Evo that Serina introduced and impose. I'm interested what will you do with this one with Mustelids and Mephitid :) 2) Just to ask, it will not be a problem and a limitation that all the main dominant subject species of Mustelids and Mephitid are mainly predatory carnivorous species ? Usually, the main focus seeded species is an animal very flexible, generalist and opportunistic regarding its diet, in order for it to radiate and be in most niches as possible to survived extinctions. Here, meat/fish composed the great majority or entire diet of all the Musteloid species you introduce. Meaning they will or would remain/restrict themselves to being predators, and like all predators, very succeptible and vulnerable to how the herbivores and preys species are doing. And predators are usually the very first animals to face repercussion of extinction events. Thankfully, small descendant of the seeded species still feeding on small typical ancestral rodent-like herbivores will survive, as mustelid such marten, ferret etc... can survived entirely only by eating mouses/rats, but in order for that so, would have to retain the ancestral bodyplan of their seeded ancestors. In fact, one probleme with Musteloid, is that their typical long, fin, slender, gracile, short face with strong bite and short legged body made them already ultra efficient and effective for almost any tasks, niches or situations. Otters have evolved from typical land ferret/like mustelids without undergoing notable anatomical changes. As an example. So, aside increasing or decreasing in size, all species of Mustelid would not technically give descendants that are significantly differents from their ancestors in appearance. Indeed, why changing its appearance if the latter can adapt already and is efficient to all situations ?
I'm a little late, but I think it is great that you chose multiple animals for this seed world rather than being generic with the 1 vertebrate seed world or, worse, the seed worlds that begin with multiple organisms, but the creator ignores all the other ones. I am looking forward to where you go with this and please do some stuff with the molluscs, I really want someone to do a mollusc seed world since I can't do it myself because I am bad at art and can only write descriptions
Thank you! I'll definitely try to give them some love too. And honestly I'd love to see you make a mollusk seed world, even if you don't think you're good enough, and drawing you're probably better than you think :)
@@ryancoxart Thank you but I think if I was going to make a spec evo project I would use 3d modeling alien biospheres style since I am bad at drawing because of my bad dexterity in general(It's taking me like 10 seconds to type each word) but I feel extra motivated to try because of you
@@MarmotManIsCool Drawing tablets are definitely nice, but really as long as you have pencils, paper, and a scanner, you're good to go! Some of my earliest digital drawings when I was a kid were actually done with a mouse, and they were pretty good if I do say so myself XD
Love this concept, can't wait to see more uploads! I have one comment tho, would the stink hounds retain the striking colors of their skunk ancestors? It's my understanding that their stark colors are aposematic to warn would be predators, but the stink hounds wouldn't have any predators and would probably develop muted colors to camouflage themselves to help them hunt. This isn't to say I think your work is bad, it's great! Just something I thought was worth mentioning
I appreciate the feedback! My main thoughts behind the design were just that I thought it looked interesting, and denoted their skunk ancestry. Not to mention since they're still early on in their evolution it made sense to me to have them still resemble their ancestors a little bit. Future descendants will definitely be more camouflaged though! :)
If stink hounds are sufficiently strategic as pack hunters, coloration that stands out might actually help them spook prey into ambushes. Maybe the dark hairs alongside their back stripes can be raised and tilted medially to obscure the stripe from view, and the pack's flushers only raise their white tails when it's time to spook their chosen target into running toward the waiting finishers?
Anoles will probably develop to become even more arborial to avoid predators. What if they start to evolve gliding-flaps to glide and then true powered flight later on? There's no large flying animals in this seed world (only insects) and those niches have to be filled.
I really like the artwork the texture of the fur is really nice, as well as the choice of animals is certainly intresting i'm really curious where this will go, and for Mic Quality it isn't bad it just needs a bit more experience with it. Also why so many seed world are spawing this year, i'm not complaining but still.
This is a cool concept. I also have a similar planet in my fictional universe called Silvania. Lots of creatures from different planets were planted there millions of years ago by a long extinct alien race. Many of them evolved over time, and one of my species is the Artemis weasel (Neomustela artemisia). They are monogamous and the males are smaller than the females (a stark contrast to most mustelid species). What do you think are the environmental and evolutionary pressures that might cause a mustelid species to reverse their dimorphism and favor females in size?
@@BramuShaman Now that's a tough one. Honestly I suppose it would probably have something to do with the unique environmental pressures of the planet and the alien creatures around them. I love the concept though, and I'd love to see how your world develops!

@@ryancoxart AFAICT, it'll probably be either descended from one that became arboreal or one descended from either the skunks or the otters. Reason being, the former requires higher intelligence to navigate the canopies and leap from tree to tree, while the latter two have demonstrated social and/or even prosocial behavior traits. But hey, that's just me speculating on where I think this'll go!
Loved this! Are these critters from 12 million years after the planet was seeded or is that just how long the period was in general? I'm asking, since bear sized predators like Ankalagon were already appearing by about 3 million years after the K-Pg.
Thanks! :) Personally I think these guys probably came about halfway through the Inceptocene, although honestly there's every chance that later down the line I may go back and tweak a few details to make more sense. But my thought process in this instance was that with lack of the competition they faced on Earth, these guys would probably fill quite a few niches fairly quickly
@@ryancoxart Oh I didn't mean to imply that it felt like animals of this size emerged too quickly. More the opposite. When you said 12 million in the video, I thought that the Stink Hound and the Prairi Hog were too small to be among the largest animals because by 10 Million years after the K-Pg extinction we were already seeing 2 ton giants herbivores like Uintatherium and bear sized carnivores, but knowing that they're earlier than that makes their size seem much more reasonable.
Green Anole huh, is this going to be a backwords dinosaur situation? They slink around in the showdows where mammels rule the roost and them big rock comes by? I love the art btw
I noticed how big seed worlds have gotten and I love them, and I want to make some, but I have no idea where to start, how to do it, and how to not take it to an unrealistic place or lean off others too much. can you help at all?
I think I can help a bit. This is my first seed world, so I can only tell you what I've learned so far. To start with, make sure you do your research. Research climate, plate tectonics, biomes, and especially research the lifeforms that you'll be using. If you want to make it unique, it isn't too difficult. Some things I'd like to try in the future are make the planet itself different from how earth is, like maybe the soil has more copper than iron, or maybe the entire planet only has one climate, like an ice world. You could try using an animal that no one else is using, or a mix of animals. You could even ask what if a planet was populated with genetically engineered animals that don't exist in the real world, or what if you introduced earth animals to a planet that already has its own alien animals. The possibilities truly are endless. Don't forget to research common trends in evolution and how the environment affects the animals that live in it. You need to know the science, but don't forget the fiction part of "science fiction". Don't be afraid to get a little bizarre with it, and have fun! I hope that helps! I'd love to see whatever you come up with! :)

@@ryancoxart i am working on a webcomic for it! it's currently called veolocy (named it when i was 10 and it stuck around)
i have 8 different subspecies of the main species, as well as cultures and genetic maps, and i also have a magic system for one race based around the overarching premise (unstable universe with warped spacetime fabric)
i cant wait to see yours too!! it'll be interesting to see the different ways mustelids can be taken!
I feel like by introducing a variety of generalist mammals at the inception, you’ve set this world up to eventually end up looking like modern earth but without birds (mammals filling just about every niche with convergent evolution guiding them to familiar forms). Curious to see how you make it distinct
That was one of my biggest worries with this project. Falling into "Cenozoic Earth Syndrome". But I have a few ideas I want to try, and hopefully even if it doesn't end up being super distinct, it'll at least be interesting on its own.
So happy that speculative evolution and seed worlds are becoming popular. I really want to start working on my own but keeping it within the realms of both uniqueness and mild evolutionary sense is proving difficult😂.
It can be difficult to get started, but as long as you remember to do your research and to have fun with it you should be fine XD
0:57, A dog sized Canadian Weasel with the attitude of a chainsaw, and enough F**K YOU energy to chase off a grizzly.
Looking forward to the next one, and if we'll ever get a "Mustelileo" or "Mustelis Rex", so to speak! Great art, mate
Thank you! :)
Un Mundo Semilla protagonisado por una de mis Familias de Mamíferos favorita? Definitivamente es un proyecto de Evolución Especulativa del que voy hastar al tanto los próximos años!
i love how detild you have gone with the descriptions its show your interest in animals.
Thank you! My friends have pretty much known me as "the animal guy" for as long as I can remember XD
mustelids are very much my favorite animal group and i too agree that they don't get the spotlight anywhere near as much as they deserve. so this is very cool
Ayyy, welcome to the spec bio crew! Also, gotta say, love the name Ryan lol. Good choice 😂
Great Video, I’m so glad Ive found another seed world project. Keep up the good work!
Thank you! :)
i love the species you chose so much, reminds me of all the animals I'd see at my local parks growing up!
Keep it up. I am so excited to see that speculative evolution is growing on TH-cam
Me too! So many people are making such interesting seed worlds! One of my hopes for this book in popularity is that more kids will become interested in evolution and nature science! :)
@@ryancoxart I hope so too. It is a wildly fascinating and important topic, which I feel is not completely understood. Anyway, I can't wait to see how your series turns out. Hopefully there will be a book one day
*hands over chef hat*
Let’s see what you can cook
i love the seedworld boom i hope it spawns a genre
I'm so happy there's more and more seedworlds appearing
THE ONLY MAMMAL SPEC EVO IVE SEEN, CANT WAIT
And another one
About the striped skunk, it's a Mephitidae and not a Mustelidea (but I don't blame)
Yeah, that was a bit of an oversight on my part. But I love skunks so I'll keep them on as an honorary mustelid XD
@@ryancoxart It's not all that big of an oversight; they're still part of the Musteloidea superfamily, alongside Racoons and Red Pandas!
@@kennyholmes5196 Very true! I'll definitely acknowledge it in a future video, although I think for now I'll keep the name "World of Weasels" for the sake of simplicity. I really appreciate all the feedback! It helps me out a lot :)
@@ryancoxart I mean, musteloidea is still known as the Weasel Superfamily, so the name doesn't need to be changed at all! Just a little nod to the fact that it's the superfamily rather than just the family.
oh hell yeah. i fucking LOVE spec evo seed worlds
You and me both! :)
Spec evo for the win, glad I found your channel
Epic, I will be waiting for the next episode.
I wish you added ferrets. 10 foot long floppy beasts that roamed the planet would be cool
Well now, this one is certainly interesting. Can't wait to see what comes from it!
"Another fine addition to my collection." - Me adding this to my group of seed worlds / spec evo series
It's an honor to be part of the line up! :)
What else is in the collection?
An idea that I think would work is an otter descendent that fills the niche of a bear. 1 otters are related to bears 2 because of the abundance of food and no other prey in the water they will over populate and have to start our competing each other or become purely land animals.
I like the idea of a bear-otter! I have big plans for them, and I may just have to take that into consideration 👀
Lion-like otters also? Thinking about a more terrestrial enhydriodon-looking otter.
Skunks would be a rival for the bear niche, I think. They're the only omnivores among the initial contenders, apart from mice.
@@That_OneRandomGuy Yep, that was Enhydriodon omoensis.
Always nice to see more spec evo content and wounder if we going see some flying squirrels and ferrets in the near future.
This is nice 😍.
I'm also starting my own Spec Evo about a world of *Lovebird Parrots* & *Christmas Island Crabs* 🦜🦀.
I wanna see how evolution will affect these 2 organisms 😅
Cool! I can't wait to see it! :)
I like the idea, Mustelidae are one of my favourite families!
I love seed worlds. Curious archive made a video about one and ever since I've been hooked
Babe wake up, a new seedworld just dropped!!!
I love Mustelids
I love how the popularity of spec Evo and seed world's lately I want to do my own
Do it!! Everyone should make their own spec evo project :)
Well done, good luck for your project!
Thank you! :)
It’s funny you should show the thumbnails to those specific videos. I just made a seeded world playlist including those very series and I am very excited to add you to the mix
I'm honored to be part of the mix! :)
I really love your project so far, however, some constructive criticism I have is that I wish we could see more of the in between stages of something like a small generalist prairie dog to a large megafaunal grazer like the Prairie Hog. Other than that, I really like how you are taking this series, & I hope to see more.
*Also a one episode of your seed world are focusing "İsolated Ecosystems" like İslands and Caves. This is İnteresting???? You are Amazing ❤❤❤❤❤😊😊😊😊*
Glad you're excited! I definitely want to make an episode about island species eventually! :)
Honesty, a seedworld video popped up in my feed a week ago and now I'm obsessed 😅
Right? I never would've guessed that so many people had an itch that seed worlds would manage to scratch so perfectly XD
Very interested to see how this turns out! I absolutely love Wolverines, so I'm curious as to what you have in store for them.
"... Dinosaurs eat man, Otters inherit the earth..." Yeah, that checks out! 😝
We spent all this time asking ourselves if we could, we didn't think to stop and ask if we otter XD
I'm interested what will you do with this one with Mustelids and Mephitid :)
2) Just to ask, it will not be a problem and a limitation that all the main dominant subject species of Mustelids and Mephitid are mainly predatory carnivorous species ?
@@ryancoxart Thank you but I think if I was going to make a spec evo project I would use 3d modeling alien biospheres style since I am bad at drawing because of my bad dexterity in general(It's taking me like 10 seconds to type each word) but I feel extra motivated to try because of you
@@Adaptibility I'm glad to hear that, then! I wish you all the best luck, and I can't wait to see it come to life! :)
weals are very intresting for a seed world.
i'd also wanna make one, perhaps deers or moose
anyways this looks awesome, subscribed
Thank you! You should absolutely make a seed world! The more people in the community, the better :)
@@ryancoxart thx! just gotta make a yt channel and get myself a drawing tablet
@@MarmotManIsCool Drawing tablets are definitely nice, but really as long as you have pencils, paper, and a scanner, you're good to go! Some of my earliest digital drawings when I was a kid were actually done with a mouse, and they were pretty good if I do say so myself XD
this is awesome! I ll keep watching as more comes out :)
Glad you like it! I've already got the illustrations for episode two in the world :)
@@sharondornhoff7563 Kinda like Painted Dogs over in Africa, right?
I cant wait for more!!! :D
This is so cool, wanna see more
Thank you! :)
Anoles will probably develop to become even more arborial to avoid predators. What if they start to evolve gliding-flaps to glide and then true powered flight later on? There's no large flying animals in this seed world (only insects) and those niches have to be filled.
Oh I have big plans for the anoles on that front ;)
I doubt it'll take long for the weasels to follow them into the trees, considering pine martens and fishers do so well as arboreal hunters.
@@sharondornhoff7563 Just wait till episode two ;)
@@ryancoxart ooh, alright, cool
I really like the artwork the texture of the fur is really nice, as well as the choice of animals is certainly intresting i'm really curious where this will go, and for Mic Quality it isn't bad it just needs a bit more experience with it.
Also why so many seed world are spawing this year, i'm not complaining but still.
Thank you! :)
And yeah, I'm much more experienced with drawing than with audio recording. Hopefully the next video will be improved in that regard 😅
I have MORE inspo for my own spec evo project. yay!!!!!!!!!! (if you are wondering what is tabout its about well a seed world with arthropods and mainly arthropods.)
Sounds awesome! I can't wait to see it :)
@@ryancoxart tysm! for both complimenting my project and well. Fueling my fire of spec evo content XD
Awesome stuff!
More please! XD
after all these new seed worlds that are popping up get like 10 episodes each i wanna see a battle between all of their apex predators
Now that's something I'd like to see too XD
Finally oh yes weasel world
I love this
There are so many of these now
Keep it up
I know, right? I never knew I needed more seed worlds in my life til I started seeing more of them pop up on TH-cam!
Looks promising! It’s good to meet you! Check out Keenan Taylor’s Talesnof Kaimere. I’ve been working on my book ALOT!!! Also have GIANT porcupines taking the place of giant ground sloths. BIG SPIKE SLOTH GO BRRRRR my Seed world is called “Priad”, but it is simply the setting of my series of novels. A very well built world and I hope to see more from you my friend!!! Also I love how there’s only ONE REPTILE!!!! I wanna see the RESURGENCE OF THE MOSASAURS!!!!!
I think your fish could need some pray fish that can make use of waterplants and algea
Looks good! Keep it up!
Thank you! :)
Well damn, now I have to subscribe because this is very well made. I hope you're happy >:3
Yes, you've fallen right into my trap >:)
My brother hopes to do a seed world though he does admittedly worry it might be forgotten due to others doing similar ideas.
@@thedarkmasterthedarkmaster Tell him to go for it! The whole point of these is to have fun. I am firmly of the belief that everyone should try their hand at world building and speculative evolution, regardless of ambition or even talent :)
Omg yes more
I wonder which of these mustelids will evolve to become sapient in a future episode?
Oh believe me I have plans for that... 👀
Multiple species! Les go
I think plants are also pretty important impact the evolution of animals pretty hard
Definitely! I'm gonna try to give some attention to them, but unfortunately they aren't really my area of expertise compared to animals
Cant wait for more
Dudes, there's going to be a collapse of the seeded worlds soon, because there are too many of them!
Loved this!
Are these critters from 12 million years after the planet was seeded or is that just how long the period was in general? I'm asking, since bear sized predators like Ankalagon were already appearing by about 3 million years after the K-Pg.
Thanks! :)
Personally I think these guys probably came about halfway through the Inceptocene, although honestly there's every chance that later down the line I may go back and tweak a few details to make more sense.
