I hope you see this; it’s the only TH-cam comment I’ve ever left. All three of my controllers started doing this about 18 months ago. I thought for sure the head unit was faulty and it’s been collecting dust ever since. Tonight, I tried your process and it worked immediately. I am absolutely thrilled. Thank you.
You are a life saver. I had to dust out the old PS3 console during the current COVID-19 induced lockdown and found that the only controller was behaving irratically. Lucky to come across your tutorial and it went great. Thanks a lot from India....
This guy really knows what he's doing. Had this problem on two different controllers, the first time a couple years ago had trouble finding a solution and the guides were very complicated, but this man right here just found the problem while recording and fixed it perfectly. Wow
Wow! One out of my two controllers had been doing this for YEARS & I never cared to figure out how to fix it because I thought it was just garbage at this point. I followed every step of your method & I used electrical tape & now it works perfectly again! Thank you so much 😊
I can't believe Sony would expect a connector like that to maintain durability without a socket, on a device that would experience regular stress and movement, no less.
I don't believe that Sony let a Company put a controller in the stores that doesn't. Do all the things their own controller does. If you make a product it SHOULD BE JUST AS GOOD AS THE ORIGINAL. IF NOT BETTER.🤔🤨
@@westafoya6772"The controllers ArE BaD bEcAuSe Muh capitalism" thats funny because since the consoles initial release I have only ran into one controller with this issue and it was easily remedied following the steps in this video. These controllers are fine, a small margin of them have defects due to mass production. Shill for communism somewhere else.
Well done! My PS3 controller, which is embarrassingly STILL my daily console, has really been acting up. I ordered a cheap one to tie me over, but opted to try and repair this one. I didn't have the proper chemicals to clean the contact points, but was able to build up the underside of the foam contact prop. My controller works perfectly. My guess is that pressure from the controller being closed at factory in addition to the constant analog vibration, it seemingly wears grooves into it from the plastic. Building it back up was a great idea. Thanks!
Don't be embarrassed. Anyone who tries to make you embarrassed is not worth your time. I bought a PS3 in 2022 and I am happy I have got so many amazing games to enjoy. My controller glitches out sometimes too but now I am going to fix it. Edit: - Forgot to leave a comment and it's been a month now. I read a comment in this comment section a month ago and fixed it by simply pressing hard with my thumb on the Y of SONY. It doesn't freak out anymore aside for 1 minute when you either plug or unplug it. In which case, you just have to turn off controller before plugging or unplugging it and wait for 1 minute and you should be able to avoid this problem in the future. I can finally play properly now. If the problem happens again, I will have no choice but to disassemble it but I hope I don't have to do that.
I watched the whole video but I was too lazy to follow the instructions so I just punched my controller multiple times and now it works perfectly, thank you so much
Hey guys, just did this on my controller and works great! BUT, make sure u guys put the green pcb UNDER the black tabs... spent like 30 mins trying to fit in the back and it kept on being uneven and finally figured that was the problem. Hope that helps anyone else having a problem putting the controller back together. Good luck :)

What's with the newer controllers being so stiff?? I thought it might have just been my mind playing trucks on me, but it seems like other people have this same problem.

You legend. I just fixed 2 controllers I was ready to bin as they acted like they were posessed and going crazy. Instead of the sticky paper I used blutac. It fills the gap nice and holds the felt pad in place. Thanks for the tip.
Nov 2023 - this video brought my controller back to life! I got mine years ago when I was a little kid. Went to the mall with my dad, and he said to me: "Pick out one thing, anything you want. It will be your birthday present". I chose the PS3 with MW3 Thank you
7 years later, this video is still paying dividends. My remote is operating fine now! I love how you identified the sponge's deformation as a point of interest - you're a quick thinker.
My controller was behaving weirdly when playing PC games, thought it could not be fixed after trying different drivers etc. Found your video, followed the guide, and now it works. Amazing!
Thanks for this video! I've been using crappy knock off PS3 controllers but turns out I had exactly the same problem as you did with the smooshed foam and the dirty contacts. Fixed both my controllers in under an hour!
Worked for me. I used a few layers of scotch tape (rolled). Then cut the tape to the size of the foam. And lastly took a q-tip and some rubbing alcohol and cleaned the contacts. Works perfectly now.
I was honestly really skeptical that putting tape on just the little rubber thing the pins rest on would do anything, but sure enough, that completely fixed my problem! My controllers have been like that for years, and now, it's like it's brand new! Thank you so much!
This worked out for me so thanks! Just a note to be really careful with the shoulder buttons. They were being difficult when I was trying to get the circuit board back into place. One wasn’t firmly set in enough, I think it came loose while taking the controller apart. The board knocked the whole plastic base that the buttons lock into out, dislodging it entirely from the plastic strip that was fitted into it. It took a lot of hassle and a couple tries to get that strip and parts back in place, with the contacts centred and responding properly. Was great to see it all working properly in the end though!
I have everything back in how I believe it goes, but now none of the shoulder buttons work. Did you experience this at all, and if so, how did you overcome it?
@@owenatkinson5744 Honestly I haven’t had a problem with them since! I think you might just have to take it apart to see what’s going on if they’ve stopped responding. Could be that something slipped out of place? It’s a headache for sure.
@@Auchtahelweit I think it was the thin plastic sheet that runs under the buttons, had that in the wrong place. Finally got all but L2 working, so I'm calling that a win.
It's 2022 and I just had the urge to play some PS3 games and i had this exact problem. Cheers for this easy fix! Just cut up some thin cardboard and put it under the rubber. Appreciated!
This problem originates with people getting mad and twisting and squeezing their controllers. Aside from the lack of tension, the carbon that's stenciled on the contact gets rubbed off and lays about over the contacts.
DaneSaysStuff And then there's people like me with hyperhydrosis and my sweaty ass hands destroy my controller. Seriously, with hyperhydrosis, I destroy everything I touch. The sweat affects the controller as if I spilled a shit ton of water on it. I don't squeeze it or anything. It's my stupid hands. Luckily, I started wearing gloves which helps a lot.
DaneSaysStuff lol I rage twisted my handset a couple of times. Now I'm playing Singularity and using all my medikits, all my e99 cells and swapping weapons then crouching... all not what I wanted. I did however hit the reset button and for Now, it seems to have fixed it.
Im not sure it has anything to do with getting mad. I've been gaming for 23 years and I don't get mad at my console games when things don't go my way... because I'm not a 12 year old boy. Nor am I a grown ass man who acts like a 12 year old boy (I'm looking at you League players...) I think it's just that they designed the controllers very poorly because Corporations just don't care about making good products anymore. PlayStation is going to release a new console every 5-10 years, and they no longer make platforms cross compatible, so ... I'm willing to be that the controllers are designed to only last 5 years, for that purpose.
Just wanted to say thank you. After your excellent guild I repaired my controllers. I'm playing some old games again and it's not behaving erraticly. Thank you
Thank you for making this video the picture quality is excellent for viewing tiny electric parts and your video was very professional and helpful. You do a great service to help DIY wherever people can access youtube. Thank you from the bottom of my heart for saving me the cost of a new controller!
Goddamn it, took me an hour and half to get this done and it worked, but the buttons R2, L2, become pretty tough when you touch them, ahh whatever i was gonna trash it anyway but now i will use it until it burns 😈
Good to hear! Yep it can be a little fiddly, but it's a simple repair that should last you. Using electrical tape would have been a better idea in hindsight to build up the layers. Easy to cut and easy to use.
this video helped me fix a used controller i got from gamestop, and then i noticed i had this same problem with L2 and R2. the pointy parts of the wire springs both have to be pointing toward the handles/grips. hold one point up into the button, press the button into the snaps. you'll know it's correct if one point is hidden inside the button and the other is right up against the white piece, visibly pointing handle-ward. i had to also adjust the white pieces that hold L1/R1 in place.. they had come loose and werent pressing properly. if correctly placed, they feel snug/secure and look symmetrical on both sides. sorry this came a year later for you, but hopefully it helps someone else in a year from now XD
Just reopen it you probably miss aligned the buttons it happen to me the first time I noticed L1 was harder to press then the other buttons I reopened it realigned L1 boom smooth as gin and juice.
That is due to the tiny springs which are on the side of those buttons. Physically, it is possible to place them in two differents positions. But only one is good as it provides more pressure to bring the buttons back. I failed at first time to ;)
i used peel and stick foam sheets from walmart and i took out the small black pad. i cut a piece of the peel and stick foam pad and noticed it was the same thickness as the old pad.. so what i did was stuck the sticky side onto the old pad to double up on pad thickness. I put it in place, gave it all a good wipe with 90% alcohol (dont use 70% - you get residue). After tightening all the screws nice and snug, this bad boy started working again!!!! Thanks Global Garage!!! I THOUGHT IT WAS THE ELECTRONICS GOING OUT. YOU SAVED ME.
Great video, I just cleaned the 2 opposing contacts on mine with a dry cotton bud and it works again, it's a god awful design that is for sure especially when you consider how much they cost even used.
Such a great video. I used a thin self stick felt pad. Worked wonders! Playing PS3 in 2024 again! It’s been out of commission for many years. Thank you!
2024 and just booted up my ps3 for the first time since i bought my ps4 10 years ago... All my controllers were doing this and I'm glad to have found this fix. Thank you!
It's almost 2024 and I've been using the same controller since 2008 or 09. It just started bugging recently, and you just saved a piece of my childhood💯
Thanks, mate. Years ago i bought a second hand PS3 from a friend. But one of the controllers were broken. My friend already told me about it, so i never bothered to fix it. Until the other controller also broke lately. Upon close inspection, it turns out the first broken controller was actually in a better condition than the second one. So i decided to fix it, following your tutorial. Well, now it's working perfectly. So thanks again, mate. Cheers.
2020 and I just revived 4 controllers that I thought were as good as dead. Cleaning the contacts was good enough to fix the controllers. This tutorial is gold
Thanks for taking the time to make this video. Bought a PS3 controller super cheat, looked very good so I took a chance. Got home, charged it, powered on but crazy movement, thought oh well, but figured I'd do a quick search first. Found your video and after like a month of having bought it I just sat down, grabbed my tools and put on your video, 10 mins later and I have what feels like a brand new PS3 controller that I bought super cheat. Thank you.
The ps4 controller is sooooooo much better than this, I'm glad Sony finally updated the DS lol. The ps3 controller feels like a cheap chinese knockoff.
June 2024 and this still works, thank you very much for such a helpful yet simple tutorial, I kinda lost hope halfway to be honest when my triggers weren't working and the case wasn't clamping but everything turned out great, God bless you
Brilliant! This worked a treat on my increasingly temperamental and annoying PS3 controller. I just used 5 or 6 layers of masking tape to pack up that foam piece. You've just saved me 30 quid - CHEERS! 👍
I retired my ps3 because of this exact issue and I got a ps4. Now it's 2023, I've got a ps5 but you got to pay to stream ps3 games. I pulled out the old girl. This fixed my controller and I got to play some of my childhood classics. I appreciate what you do!
Wasn't expecting this to work, and it took a couple tries because I didn't know what I was doing with the shoulder buttons at first; but once I did get it right it's perfect. Leaving a tip right now!
Just bought 2 controllers for $20. Tried to use them and they were all over the place, they looked hardly used. I cleaned the contacts and cut a piece of zip tie the same length as the foam and put the piece of tie under it. They work great now, like brand new. Thanks for the vid.
Just want to thank u because about 2 years ago I had to buy a new controller and this controller is now giving me some problems. Now after watching ur video simply fixed two controllers. That rectangular like black foam I padded with teflon tape and just works good
You're basically Playstation God. Thank you. I tried to fix it before watching your video but i failed. I succeded once I watched your video, that little spongy thing was the issue. I used double sided spongy thingy below the black spongy thingy and it worked like a charm. Gratitude to you!
6 year after putting the PS3 in mothballs, i open it up and both controllers fritzy, this video is a life saver, both are now back in action, thanks for the helpful video :)
I got it to work! My 1st try, I was just using paper. But, I went and bought some command strips, took one, cut it to size and stuck the old foam pad on it. It worked right away, on my worst controller! Thank you, you’re a life saver!

I got mine years ago when I was a little kid. Went to the mall with my dad, and he said to me: "Pick out one thing, anything you want. It will be your birthday present".
I chose the PS3 with MW3
Thank you
Same story with my uncle, such fond memories about that time
2020: this fix just worked for me, thanks so much!
7 years later, this video is still paying dividends. My remote is operating fine now! I love how you identified the sponge's deformation as a point of interest - you're a quick thinker.
Everyone: thanks you saved my controller
Me: buys broken controllers-Fix the controllers-sell them for more.
Stonks!
can i buy one
This issue haunted me for some years now, with no original PS3 controllers to buy anymore. But this, this my friend, just saved me. Thanks a lot!
You sir will go straight to heaven. Thank you.
Yep that sounds spot on.
Nor am I a grown ass man who acts like a 12 year old boy (I'm looking at you League players...)
I think it's just that they designed the controllers very poorly because Corporations just don't care about making good products anymore.
PlayStation is going to release a new console every 5-10 years, and they no longer make platforms cross compatible, so ... I'm willing to be that the controllers are designed to only last 5 years, for that purpose.
Welp, shouldn’t have played Demon’s Souls.
plugged a ps3 controller that i haven't used in ages and had the same issue. Thanks mate your guide is a lifesaver.
Cleaning alone solved the problem entirely. Thank you.
لازم بالكحول ولا عادي ؟
Just wanted to say thank you. After your excellent guild I repaired my controllers. I'm playing some old games again and it's not behaving erraticly.
Thank you
Thank you so much for this! Been stressing out for a year and now it works perfectly! It helps me a lot!! 🖤👍🏻👍🏻 Much love peace out! ✌🏻️
@@nabr0n it did :D
You are conducting a damn surgery on youtube, how is this not age-restricted? SUCH VIOLENCE!
RexityHD we should complain in the controller rights committee
2024 and this worked perfectly! Thank you so much and God bless you
Great video, I just cleaned the 2 opposing contacts on mine with a dry cotton bud and it works again, it's a god awful design that is for sure especially when you consider how much they cost even used.
Yep a shit design. I may open up the PS4 controller and see if they fixed it.
I'm still shocked and amazed how well this worked. 10/10 will link anyone who has problems with the joystick to this video.
Although I found it took me some time to reassemble the pieces, it actually worked.
Such a great video. I used a thin self stick felt pad. Worked wonders! Playing PS3 in 2024 again! It’s been out of commission for many years. Thank you!
Welcome to another video of what's inside?
Today we're looking at a ps3 controller.
lul
2024 and just booted up my ps3 for the first time since i bought my ps4 10 years ago... All my controllers were doing this and I'm glad to have found this fix. Thank you!
Ur my Favorite TH-cam or now you fix my life
It's almost 2024 and I've been using the same controller since 2008 or 09. It just started bugging recently, and you just saved a piece of my childhood💯
legend!! it worked. got a new sub mate!
Cheers.
Thanks for saving my DS3 man, I owe You a cold one :D
Thank you for sharing this fix! It worked for my two PS3 controllers with double sided tape
thanks, this fixed my controllers!
ass
YYYAAASSSSSS!! 2023!! This still works!!! Fixed all 6 of my controllers.. Thank you so much man!!!!!😁
2023 gang:
👇
2020 and I just revived 4 controllers that I thought were as good as dead. Cleaning the contacts was good enough to fix the controllers. This tutorial is gold
Bro your the best your awesome this works I hope you become rich and go to heaven 😃😄😅😍❤❤❤
Lol😂
2 of my controllers were glitching a lot, this tutorial fixed both of them! i have zero problems now. thank you very much!!!!
There is Reset button
9 years using it and hade no idea
June 2024 and this still works, thank you very much for such a helpful yet simple tutorial, I kinda lost hope halfway to be honest when my triggers weren't working and the case wasn't clamping but everything turned out great, God bless you
Brilliant! This worked a treat on my increasingly temperamental and annoying PS3 controller. I just used 5 or 6 layers of masking tape to pack up that foam piece. You've just saved me 30 quid - CHEERS! 👍
I haven't used my PS3 in years because of this, randomly found this video, tried it and it worked! Thank you sm
I couldnt figure out how to give a one-time tip :/
lemme know if theres a better way
Just bought 2 controllers for $20. Tried to use them and they were all over the place, they looked hardly used. I cleaned the contacts and cut a piece of zip tie the same length as the foam and put the piece of tie under it. They work great now, like brand new. Thanks for the vid.
Fixed my controller! Thanks! Zero reliable companies selling controllers nowadays, so purchasing a "new" one was not an option. Thanks again!
stuck in quarantine and decided to revive my ps3. THANK YOU SO MUCH.
Its 2023 and i just fixed my ps3 controller thanks to this guy
I don’t think you understand how much I love you as a human being

January 2024, I follow your tutorial and now my controllers work! I can sell this PS3 now! Thank you very much.
